In the literature, studies have evidenced the efforts adopted by firms to develop digital technology with the hope of achieving sustainable decisions and competitive performance. However, studies have yet to provide an extensive explanation of the mechanisms used by firms in their digital technology adoption to impact and enhance value, particularly among small and medium enterprises (SMEs). In this regard, accounting information has served as a fundamental basis for business decision-making and the extensive use of digital technology has paved the way for the efficiency and effectiveness of accounting functions in modifying information relating to such functions. More specifically, a digital accounting system (DAS) enables the reporting and processing of large transaction amounts and generates the data required for analysis. However, despite these advantages, SMEs have been slow in their adoption and usage of DASs. Accordingly, this study drew upon resource-based view theory and the technology-organization-environment framework to propose an integrated model for examining the determinants and impact of using DAS among SMEs. The proposed model encapsulates the use and performance aspect of DAS. The study utilized a self-administered survey questionnaire as the primary data collection instrument. Data from 183 SMEs in Jordan were analyzed using partial least squares-structural equation modeling. The findings reveal that compatibility, organizational readiness, top management support and government support all had significant effects on DAS usage, which, in turn, had a positive and significant effect on DAS performance. With regard to the moderating effects, COVID-19 was found to have a moderating role on the DAS usage–DAS performance relationship. The study findings explain the way firms can enhance their DAS use to obtain optimum performance, thereby contributing to the literature on the antecedents and effects of using current information technology/information systems. The study recommends that the government of Jordan prepare and carry out a campaign concerning the importance of DASs for SMEs.

Large‐Scale Personalized Categorization of Financial Transactions
2020
A major part of financial accounting involves organizing business transactions using a customizable filing system that accountants call a “chart of accounts.” This task must be carried out for every financial transaction, and hence automation is of significant value to the users of accounting software. In this article we present a large‐scale recommendation system used by millions of small businesses in the USA, UK, Australia, Canada, India, and France to organize billions of financial transactions each year. The system uses machine learning to combine fragments of information from millions of users in a manner that allows us to accurately recommend chart‐of‐accounts categories even when users have created their own or named them using abbreviations or in foreign languages. Transactions are handled even if a given user has never categorized a transaction like that before. The development of such a system and testing it at scale over billions of transactions is a first in the financial industry.

An approach to sustainable enterprise resource planning system implementation in small- and medium-sized enterprises
2024
The adoption of sustainable enterprise resource planning systems in small and medium-sized enterprises represents a strategic response to the evolving landscape of corporate responsibility and environmental stewardship. This study seeks to identify which factors determine the level of satisfaction when implementing a sustainable enterprise resource planning system in small- and medium-sized business. A survey was designed to measure managers' satisfaction with S-ERP implementation in their companies. A multivariate analysis was run to test the factors affecting the level of satisfaction with the implementation. The general results show that the type of module implemented positively and significantly affects the level of satisfaction with S-ERP. One specific result is that the more accounting modules implemented, the more complex the system is, and the more effort is needed to implement the new technology effectively and use it properly. Another result shows that the sales marketing module has an inverse impact on satisfaction with an S-ERP, possibly because this module is complex and difficult to manage. This study contributes significantly to the emerging body of knowledge on S-ERP implementation by seeking to fill the research gap on the interaction between the S-ERP system and user's satisfaction, focusing on small businesses. Future research directions should delve into the long-term impact of sustainable ERP adoption on SME performance and resilience. Additionally, investigating the effectiveness of government policies in supporting sustainable ERP adoption, along with exploring the actual environmental impact of ERP systems in SMEs, can contribute to advancing our understanding of this dynamic and evolving field.
