Intrigue in the Cathedrals of Science
In football it's Dan Marino--the best quarterback never to win a Superbowl. In golf, it's Sam Snead--the greatest player never to win the US Open. In baseball, Ty Cobb, Ted Williams and Carl Yazstremski are just a few of the greats never to play for a World Series-winning team. Switching to big-league science, arguably the best chemist never to win the Nobel Prize in chemistry is Gilbert N. Lewis. In his new book, The Cathedrals of Science: The Personalities and Rivalries that Made Modern Chemistry, author Patrick Coffey weaves together the stories of the leaders in this emerging discipline, and shows how fights over priority, backstabbing, cronyism, and grudges shaped the history of physical chemistry just as much as the actual discoveries.
