Teacher education for the changing demographics of schooling : issues for research and practice
The book takes as its premise the argument that diverse learner groups are a fact of demographic change that should be considered foundational in the preparation of teachers rather than be problematized as a challenge. It promotes the idea of teacher education for inclusive education based on a consideration of what it means to educate all children together. Divided into four parts, the book considers key issues for teacher education, teacher agency, teacher education for diversity, and a research agenda for the future. In today's world, the demographic profile of students in schools is more complex than ever before, and the increasing cultural, linguistic and developmental diversity of today's classrooms, along with the pressure to achieve high academic standards for everybody has significant implications for how classroom teachers should be prepared to meet these demands. This book advances a new understanding of inclusive education that addresses the limitations inherent in current approaches that problematize differences between learner groups by promoting a view of difference as an aspect of human individuality. It considers the implications of the research evidence underpinning teacher education for diversity and makes suggestions for future research in the field.

Social Realism and the problem of the problem of knowledge in the sociology of education

This paper examines from a Social Realist perspective a set of issues in the sociology of education regarding the problem of knowledge. It focuses upon the issue of relativism associated with the constructionist approach that since the time of the New Sociology of Education in the 1970s has constituted in different forms the dominant perspective in the field. It identifies features shared between constructionism and the 'positivist' approach with which it contrasts itself. It is argued that these two positions have more in common than is often recognized and draws upon Critical Realism as an alternative to both. Social Realism explores the sociological implications of Critical Realism for education.

The educational, physical and social dimensions of school loneliness: staff insights from Swedish schools

The aim of this study was to explore student loneliness and a lack of sense of belonging in Swedish schools, and to gain insight from school staff on how to identify and address these issues. Fourteen school personnel-including counsellors, special educators, and teachers-were interviewed using a semi-structured approach. The data were analysed thematically, both inductively and deductively. According to the staff, loneliness and lack of belonging are widespread phenomena, observable throughout the school day-for example, during breaks and other social interactions. These are complex phenomena influenced by both individual and environmental factors. Contributing elements to students' school experiences were identified within the educational, physical, and social aspects of schooling. In particular staff highlighted how these aspects intertwine and may negatively affect students' feelings of isolation and alienation. Key implications include the need for school leaders and policy makers to consider the interconnectedness of these dimensions-the educational, physical, and social aspects of schooling-in order to effectively address loneliness and foster more inclusive and supportive school environments for all students.
