The Road Past Monchy
2024
Terence Loveridge offers a unique look at the land and air
operations around the strategic village of Monchy-le-Preux at the
center of the western front during World War I. The story of the
Great War is usually one of condemnation or rehabilitation of
strategists and consecration of the common soldier, while the story
of those who planned, directed, and led operations on the ground
has generally been overlooked.
Loveridge uses experiences of junior leaders fighting around the
key terrain of Monchy-le-Preux to challenge the currently accepted
views and reveal that the Great War, despite subsequent impression,
was a surprisingly dynamic effort conducted in an arena of
constantly evolving practices, techniques, and technology. Less
well known than its contemporary campaigns at the Somme, Verdun, or
Passchendaele, Monchy also carries less preconceived baggage and
thus offers a prime opportunity to reevaluate the accepted wisdom
of the events, personalities, and understandings of the Great
War.
The Road Past Monchy offers readers a unique chance to
uncover the \"lost\" perspective of junior war leaders in a theater
of war that saw almost continuous operations from 1914 through to
1918.
Elegy : the first day on the Somme
On 1st July 1916, after a five-day bombardment, 11 British and 5 French divisions launched their long-awaited 'Big Push' on German positions on high ground above the Rivers Ancre and Somme on the Western Front. Some ground was gained, but at a terrible cost. In killing-grounds whose names are indelibly imprinted on 20th-century memory, German machine-guns - manned by troops who had sat out the storm of shellfire in deep dugouts - inflicted terrible losses on the British infantry. Andrew Roberts evokes the pity and the horror of the blackest day in the history of the British army - a summer's day-turned-hell-on-earth by modern military technology - in the words of casualties, survivors, and the bereaved.

Warfare in Woods and Forests
2011
Fighting in woods and forests is a very special form of war. Avoided by military commanders unless such terrain is to their advantage, for soldiers forest battles are a chaotic mix of dread, determination, and, all too often, death. Adversaries remain in constant fear of concealed ambush, casualties usually must be abandoned, and prisoners who cannot be guarded are killed. Heightened fear can lead to excesses. Too often, armies have been badly prepared and trained for such warfare and have suffered severely for it. In Warfare in Woods and Forests, noted military historian Anthony Clayton describes major events in woods and forest warfare from the first century CE to the 21st. These events involve Roman soldiers in Germany 2,000 years ago; North Americans in 18th- and 19th-century conflicts; invaders of Russia in 1812 and 1941; British, French, and Americans in France in 1916 and 1918; Americans in the Hürtgen Forest in 1944; and modern-day Russian soldiers in Chechnya.
Remembering 1916 : the Easter Rising, the Somme and the politics of memory in Ireland
\"The year 1916 witnessed two events that would profoundly shape both politics and commemoration in Ireland over the course of the following century. Although the Easter Rising and the Battle of the Somme were important historical events in their own right, their significance also lay in how they came to be understood as iconic moments in the emergence of Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach drawing on history, politics, anthropology and cultural studies, this volume explores how the memory of these two foundational events has been constructed, mythologised and revised over the course of the past century. The aim is not merely to understand how the Rising and the Somme came to exert a central place in how the past is viewed in Ireland, but to explore wider questions about the relationship between history, commemoration and memory\"-- Provided by publisher.

Somme, 1st Battle of the, France, 1916
2016
Marking the centenary of the Battle of the Somme, this programme presents the historic encounter from, for the first time, both sides of no-man's land. With access to little-known German military archives, Peter Barton reveals a story that contradicts previously unchallenged myths. Why, given German forces were sometimes outnumbered five-to-one by the British and French, was this battle hailed as a British victory? This series reveals insights about the failed Allied strategy, and revolutionary German tactics. And there are new answers to the questions that still haunt us 100 years on. Why did this battle last so long? And why was there such carnage? In the second episode, historian Peter Barton concentrates on the second phase of the battle, from the middle of July to the middle of September 1916.
