Intertidal History in Island Southeast Asia
Intertidal History in Island Southeast Asiashows the vital part maritime Southeast Asians played in struggles against domination of the seventeenth-century spice trade by local and European rivals. Looking beyond the narrative of competing mercantile empires, it draws on European and Southeast Asian sources to illustrate Sama sea people's alliances and intermarriage with the sultanate of Makassar and the Bugis realm of Boné. Contrasting with later portrayals of the Sama as stateless pirates and sea gypsies, this history of shifting political and interethnic ties among the people of Sulawesi's littorals and its land-based realms, along with their shared interests on distant coasts, exemplifies how regional maritime dynamics interacted with social and political worlds above the high-water mark.
Mien Relations
Thailand's hill tribes have been the object of anthropological research, cultural tourism, and government intervention for a century, in large part because these groups are held to have preserved distinctive ethnic traditions despite their contacts with modern culture. Hjorleifur Jonsson rejects the conventional notion that the worlds of traditional peoples are being transformed or undone by the forces of modernity. Among the Mien people of northern Thailand he finds a complex highlander identity that has been shaped by a thousand years of interaction in a multiethnic contact zone. In Mien Relations, Jonsson suggests that as early as the thirteenth century, the growing influence of Chinese and Thai state authority had led to a peculiarly urban understanding of the hinterlands—the forests and the mountains—as an area beyond state control and the rhetoric of civilization. Mountain peoples became understood as a distinct social type, an idea elaborated by government classification systems in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Their discovery by Western anthropologists is, he suggests, merely one more episode influencing Mien identity. Jonsson questions traditional ethnography's focus on fieldwork and personal observation—and its concomitant blindness to political manipulation and to historical formation. Throughout Mien Relations, he revisits long-neglected connections between China and Southeast Asia, combines ancient history and contemporary ethnography, engages with the serious politics of representation without abandoning the quest to write ethnographically about particular communities, and keeps state control in view without assuming its success or coherence.

Indonesian Sea Nomads
The Orang Suku Laut consider themselves indigenous Malays. Yet their interaction with others who call themselves Malays is characterised on both sides by fear of harmful magic and witchcraft. The nomadic Orang Suku Laut believe that the Qur'an contains elements of black magic, while the settled Malays consider the nomads dangerous, dirty and backward. At the centre of this study, based on first-hand anthropological data, is the symbolism of money and the powerful influence it has on social relationships within the Riau archipelago. The first major publication on these maritime nomadic communities, the book also adds fresh perspectives on anthropological debates on exchange systems, tribality and hierarchy. It also characterises the different ways of being Malay in the region and challenges the prevailing tendency to equate Malay identity with the Islamic faith. InSalvage, Krisna Uk draws on extensive research in a Cambodian village she calls Leu to provide a unique ethnography of the Jorai, an ethnic minority group that lives in Vietnam and in the most heavily bombed region of northeast Cambodia. The Jorai inhabit a remote region largely beyond the reach of the nation-state but have suffered the devastating effects of battles between and within states. Uk focuses on the experience of a Jorai community that experienced violent and protracted international and domestic conflicts-the Vietnam War and the Khmer Rouge regime. These conflicts had enduring effects on the community's moral fabric, the villagers' activities, and the physical and spiritual environments with which they engage daily.Uk's ethnography is an exploration of a resilient communal life that refuses to surrender its integrity to the blind, destructive forces of modern aerial warfare and that struggles to come to terms with the unintelligible violence unleashed by Cambodia's revolutionary movement. It examines the destructive power and enduring harm that explosive remnants of war inflict on the human body and the social relations. But it also reveals how the local Jorai villagers turn these treacherous and fatal products of foreign technology into precious subsistence items as well as aesthetic and ritualistic objects that will take the souls of the dead on their journey to a better life. Uk demonstrates how the Jorai of Leu can, through their creative and traditional labor, revive the legend of the formidable Jorai warriors by transforming deadly modern weapons into their own war trophies. Moyamoya disease in Southeast Asians: genetic and autopsy data, new cases, systematic review, and meta-analysis of all patients from the literature
Background Moyamoya disease (MMD) is a rare disorder causing ischemic and hemorrhagic juvenile stroke. It is associated with the founder susceptibility variant p.R4810K in the RNF213 gene in East Asia. Our aim was to enhance understanding of MMD in so far poorly characterized Southeast Asians and exploring differences with Caucasian Europeans. Methods By retrospective analysis of medical records and systematic database search on PubMed for all published cases, we identified Southeast Asian patients with MMD. We extracted and pooled proportions using fixed-effects models. Our own cohort was tested for the East Asian RNF213 founder variant p.R4810K. One of our Southeast Asian patients underwent post-mortem histopathological examination. Results The study cohort comprised 32 Southeast Asians. Mean age at onset in the entire cohort was 32.5 ± 20.3 years ( n  = 24), 43.4 ± 8.7 years in patients admitted to our center ( n  = 11), and 23.4 ± 22.4 years in patients from the international literature ( n  = 13). Female-to-male ratio was 1.6:1. MMD predominantly affected bilateral anterior intracranial vessels. Cerebral ischemia outnumbered transient ischemic attacks (TIAs) and intracranial hemorrhage. TIAs, arterial hypertension and obesity were significantly less frequent in Southeast Asian patients compared to Caucasian Europeans. p.R4810K was absent in all examined Southeast Asians despite of typical histopathological signs of MMD in one autopsy case. Conclusion Clinical and histopathological manifestations of MMD in Southeast Asians are similar to those in Caucasian Europeans. The genotype of MMD in Southeast Asians differs from that of most East Asian patients.
Understanding the factors related to how East and Southeast Asian immigrant youth and families access mental health and substance use services: A scoping review
The objective of the review is to identify factors related to how East and Southeast Asian immigrant youth aged 12–24 and their families access mental health and substance use (MHSU) services. To address how East and Southeast Asian youth and their families access mental health and substance use services, a scoping review was conducted to identify studies in these databases: PubMed, MEDLINE (Ovid), EMBASE (Ovid), PsychINFO, CINAHL, and Sociology Collection. Qualitative content analysis was used to deductively identify themes and was guided by Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory, the process-person-context-time (PPCT) model, and the five dimensions of care accessibility (approachability, acceptability, availability and accommodation, appropriateness, affordability). Seventy-three studies met the inclusion criteria. The dimensions of healthcare accessibility shaped the following themes: 1) Acceptability; 2) Appropriateness; 3) Approachability; 4) Availability and Accommodation. Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory and the PPCT model informed the development of the following themes: 1) Immediate Environment/Proximal Processes (Familial Factors, Relationships with Peers; 2) Context (School-Based Services/Community Resources, Discrimination, Prevention, Virtual Care); 3) Person (Engagement in Services/Treatment/Research, Self-management); 4) Time (Immigration Status). The study suggests that there is a growing body of research (21 studies) focused on identifying acceptability factors, including Asian cultural values and the model minority stereotype impacting how East and Southeast Asian immigrant youth access MHSU services. This review also highlighted familial factors (16 studies), including family conflict, lack of MHSU literacy, reliance on family as support, and family-based interventions, as factors affecting how East and Southeast Asian immigrant youth access MHSU care. However, the study also highlighted a dearth of research examining how East and Southeast Asian youth with diverse identities access MHSU services. This review emphasizes the factors related to the access to MHSU services by East and Southeast Asian immigrant youth and families while providing insights that will improve cultural safety.
Plasma proteomics for cognitive decline and dementia—A Southeast Asian cohort study
INTRODUCTION The prognostic utility of plasma proteomics for cognitive decline and dementia in a Southeast Asian population characterized by high cerebrovascular disease (CeVD) burden is underexplored. METHODS We examined this in a Singaporean memory clinic cohort of 528 subjects (n = 300, CeVD; n = 167, incident cognitive decline) followed‐up for 4 years. RESULTS Of 1441 plasma proteins surveyed, a 12‐protein signature significantly predicted cognitive decline (q‐value < .05). Sixteen diverse biological processes were implicated in cognitive decline. Ten proteins independently predicted incident dementia (q‐value < .05). A unified prediction model combining plasma proteins with clinical risk factors increased the area under the curve for outcome prediction from 0.62 to 0.85. External validation in the cerebrospinal fluid proteome of an independent Caucasian cohort replicated four of the significantly predictive plasma markers for cognitive decline namely: GFAP, NEFL, AREG, and PPY. DISCUSSION The prognostic proteins prioritized in our study provide robust signals in two different biological matrices, representing potential mechanistic targets for dementia and cognitive decline. Highlights A total of 1441 plasma proteins were profiled in a Singaporean memory clinic cohort. We report prognostic plasma protein signatures for cognitive decline and dementia. External validation was performed in the cerebrospinal fluid proteome of a Caucasian cohort. A concordant proteomic signature was identified across both biofluids and cohorts. Further studies are needed to explore the therapeutic implications of these proteins for dementia.
Islamic Nationhood and Colonial Indonesia
Drawing on previously unavailable archival material, this book argues that Indonesian nationalism rested on Islamic ecumenism heightened by colonial rule and the pilgrimage. The award winning author Laffan contrasts the latter experience with life in Cairo, where some Southeast Asians were drawn to both reformism and nationalism. After demonstrating the close linkage between Cairene ideology and Indonesian nationalism, Laffan shows how developments in the Middle East continued to play a role in shaping Islamic politics in colonial Indonesia.

Humans cannot survive for more than a few days without water. We are made of 70% water, and so is the entire planet. For these reasons, human identity is forever linked to water, both fresh and salt. The Badjao are a indigenous ethnic group living in maritime Southeast Asia. The name \"Badjao\" is a Malay-Bornean word that connotes \"man of the seas\" and that could not be a better representation of this little-known people. They live their lives entirely in the seas, with families gathering on houseboats that float out into the sea.
