Architecture and movement : the dynamic experience of buildings and landscapes
\"The experience of movement, of moving through buildings, cities, landscapes and in everyday life, is the only involvement most individuals have with the built environment on a daily basis. Yet this concept of user experience is so often neglected in architectural study and practice. This book tackles this complex subject for the first time, providing the wide range of perspectives needed to tackle this multi-disciplinary topic. Organised in four parts it:documents the architect's, planner's, or designer's approach, looking at how they have sought to deploy buildings as a promenade and how they have thought or written about it. concentrates on the individual's experience, and particularly on the primacy of walking, which engages other senses besides the visual. engages with society and social rituals, and how mutually we define the spaces through which we move, both by laying out routes and boundaries and by celebrating thresholds. analyses how we deal with promenades which are not experienced directly but via other mediums such as computer models, drawings, film and television. The wide selection of contributors include academics and practitioners and discuss cases from across the US, UK, Europe and Asia. By mingling such disparate voices in a carefully curated selection of chapters, the book enlarges the understanding of architects, architectural students, designers and planners, alerting them to the many and complex issues involved in the experience of movement. \"-- Provided by publisher.
Threshold Spaces

ARCHITECTURE / Design, Drafting, Drawing & Presentation
2014
What is a threshold space? A prelude, an intermediate space, a barrier? Inside or outside? The threshold space is all of these, usually even at the same time. He lives on the spatial ambivalence between opening and closing and at the same time creates the expectation of what is to come. Till Boettger has dealt in teaching and research projects closely with the architectural staging of arrival and reception. His book is a collection of exemplary phenomenological analyzes of spatial transitions in historical and modern cultural buildings by renowned architects. It also develops a methodology to optimize threshold rooms in all construction projects. In addition to a balance that can generate an exciting space, there is also primarily the temporal sequence of experiencing determining. Threshold spaces are shown here in their role as a spatial agent: they receive and bid farewell.
The drama of space : spatial sequences and compositions in architecture
\"The experience of architectural spaces is formed by the way they are structured, arranged and orchestrated. The Drama of Space examines the composition and articulation of architectural spaces and presents a repertoire of means and strategies for shaping spatial experience. This fundamental approach to architectural design is presented in four parts - principles of spatial dramaturgy are traced from the study of three assembly buildings of the early modern age in Venice - theatre, film, music and theory provide insight into dramaturgical theory and practice - extensive visits to 18 international case studies offer new perspectives on contemporary architecture - the book ends with a systematic presentation of the dramaturgy of space and its means and parameters in architectural design\"--Page 4 of cover.

Space (Architecture) -- Psychological aspects
2018
'City of Play' shows how play is built into the very fabric of the modern city. From playgrounds to theme parks, skittle alleys to swimming pools, to the countless uncontrolled spaces which the urban habitat affords - play is by no means just a childhood affair. A myriad essentially unproductive playful pursuits have, through time, modelled the modern city and landscape. Architect and scholar Rodrigo Pérez de Arce's erudite, original, and often surprising study explores a curiously neglected dimension of architectural design and practice: ludic space.
Public and Private Spaces of the City
2003,2004
The relationship between public and private spheres is one of the key concerns of the modern society. This book investigates this relationship, especially as manifested in the urban space with its social and psychological significance. Through theoretical and historical examination, it explores how and why the space of human socities is subdivided into public and private sections. It starts with the private, interior space of the mind and moves step by step, through the body, home, neighborhood and the city, outwards to the most public, impersonal spaces, exploring the nature of each realm and their complex, interdependent realtionships. A stimulating and thought provoking book for any architect, architectural historian, urban planner or designer.
1. Personal Space of the Body 2. Exclusive Space of the Property 3. Intimate Space of the Home 4. Interpersonal Space of Sociability 5. Communal Space of the Neighbourhood 6. Material and Institutional Space of the Common World 7. Impersonal Space of the City 8. Public and Private Spaces of the City.
In writing this book Ali Madanipour drew upon his many years of advanced study and teaching in architecture, landscape and planning; and professional practice in architectural and urban design, buildings and urban development projects including winning design awards.
Cine-Scapes

2013,2012
Cine-scapes explores the relationship between urban space, architecture and the moving image. While an impressive amount of research has been done with regards to the way in which architecture is portrayed in film, this book offers a new perspective...
What happens if we begin to see the city as a place for an embodied visual consumption; a visual apparatus or, perhaps, a system that is based on movement, light and the body, and which we can explore in kinematic, kinetic, and kinaesthetic ways?
Using film as a lens through which we look at urban spaces and places, Richard Koeck reveals the filmic and cinematic phenomena and spatial qualities that are present in postmodern landscapes, and which are perhaps otherwise disregarded or merely passively consumed.
Drawing on the author's extensive knowledge derived from architectural and film practice, Cine-scapes:
offers insight into architecture and urban debates through the eyes of a practitioner working in the fields of film and architectural design
emphasizes how filmic/cinematic tendencies take place or find their way into urban practices
can be used as a tool for educators, students and practitioners in architecture and urban design to communicate and discuss design issues with regard to contemporary architecture and cities
Cine-scapes ignites new ways of seeing, thinking and debating the nature of architecture and urban spaces.
