THIS small volume contains some of the letters I have received during the last thirty years or more from well-known big-game hunters and field-naturalists, many of whom have now passed away.
They were so interesting to me that I thought they might interest others who have shot in wilder Africa. Moreover, they describe conditions which are no longer possible considering the way many parts of that continent have been opened up since the Great War.
Whether the spread of a so-called civilization is a good thing I do not wish to discuss, but I know there are many men, including myself, who would prefer the older times when things were less complicated and conventional.
Many people are now going in for photography more than shooting, and in a way this is a good thing as it will naturally help to conserve the game. It is, however, a much less risky amusement to take animals' pictures—I mean dangerous animals—than to try to kill them, for game such as lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhinoceros are seldom dangerous until they are wounded and followed up in thick cover. Some people may doubt this statement, but it is nevertheless true, as all experienced hunters can vouch.

English National Identity and Football Fan Culture
In recent years, scholars have understood the increasing use of the St George's Cross by football fans to be evidence of a rise in a specifically 'English' identity. This has emerged as part of a wider 'national' response to broader political processes such as devolution and European integration which have fragmented identities within the UK. Using the controversial figurational sociological approach advocated by the twentieth-century theorist Norbert Elias, this book challenges such a view, drawing on ethnographic research amongst fans to explore the precise nature of the relationship between contemporary English national identity and football fan culture. Examining football fans' expressions of Englishness in public houses and online spaces, the author discusses the effects of globalization, European integration and UK devolution on English society, revealing that the use of the St George's Cross does not signal the emergence of a specifically 'English' national consciousness, but in fact masks a more complex, multi-layered process of national identity construction. Poseidon
This book is the first of its kind about the discovery and history of a foreign shipwreck in Chinese waters. In 1931, Royal Navy submarine HMS Poseidon sank in collision with a freighter during routine exercises off the Chinese coast. After it had went down, of the twenty-six crewmen who remained inside, eight attempted to surface using an early form of diving equipment. Five of them made it safely to the surface and became heroes. This lively account of the forgotten Poseidon incident tells the story of the accident and its aftermath, and takes a thorough look at the history of the Interwar Period for the Royal Navy’s Submarine Service.

Individual Locating of Soccer Players from a Single Moving View
Positional data in team sports is key in evaluating the players’ individual and collective performances. When the sole source of data is a broadcast-like video of the game, an efficient video tracking method is required to generate this data. This article describes a framework that extracts individual soccer player positions on the field. It is based on two main components. As in broadcast-like videos of team sport games, the camera view moves to follow the action and a sport field registration method estimates the homography between the pitch and the frame space. Our method estimates the positions of key points sampled on the pitch thanks to an encoder–decoder architecture. The attention mechanisms of the encoder, based on a vision transformer, captures characteristic pitch features globally in the frames. A multiple person tracker generates tracklets in the frame space by associating, with bipartite matching, the player detections between the current and the previous frames thanks to Intersection-Over-Union and distance criteria. Tracklets are then iteratively merged with appearance criteria thanks to a re-identification model. This model is fine-tuned in a self-supervised way on the player thumbnails of the video sample to specifically recognize the fine identification details of each player. The player positions in the frames projected by the homographies allow the obtaining of the real position of the players on the pitch at every moment of the video. We experimentally evaluate our sport field registration method and our 2D player tracker on public datasets. We demonstrate that they both outperform previous works for most metrics. Our 2D player tracker was also awarded first place at the SoccerNet tracking challenge in 2022 and 2023.

To cities, sports have never been just entertainment.
Progressive urbanites across the United States have used athletics
to address persistent problems in city life: the fights for racial
justice, workers' rights, equality for women and LGBTQ+ city
dwellers, and environmental conservation. In Seattle, sports
initiatives have powered meaningful reforms, such as popular
stadium projects that promoted investments in public housing and
mass transit. At the same time, conservative forces also used
sports to consolidate their power and mobilize against the civic
good. In Heartbreak City Shaun Scott takes the reader
through 170 years of Seattle history, chronicling both well-known
and long-forgotten events, like the establishment of racially
segregated golf courses and neighborhoods in the regressive 1920s
and the 1987 Seahawks players' strike that galvanized organized
labor. At every step of the journey, he uncovers how sports have
both united Seattle in pursuit of triumph and revealed its most
profound political divides. Deep archival research and analysis
combine in this people's history of a great American city's quest
to become even greater-if only it could get out of its own way.
