2014
Councillors at the December meeting of the council's Northern area meeting sanctioned the disposal of the 76.5 acre site at Ballydineen, Doneraile to local man Michael Mockley for almost EUR 175,000. The issue was even raised at Dail Eireann in October 1983 by the then newly elected Cork East TD Ned O'Keeffe. He asked the then Tanaiste and Environment Minister Dick Spring when his department would sanction the building of a dump for general and industrial waste at Ballydineen. \"There is no such proposal before my department in respect of a site at Ballydineen, Doneraile,\" he said.

Sporting life put Spring in his step
in
Spring, Dick
2016
\"I suspect if I hadn't, I would have been expelled. It led to my first headline in your paper. Not 'Spring expelled from Roscrea' but 'Spring kicks Roscrea to victory'.\" There was scepticism at home too. \"'Oh, I see your son is off playing a foreign game,'\" someone confided to his father. \"The pitch where our family had poured blood into, the three of us were kicking a rugby ball and a man told us to 'get out of that with your foreign ball'. FIGUREHEAD \"I was a Junior Minister in '81, playing against Clonakility and this fella gets me in a head-lock. 'I have the minister's head.'Don't worry,' says the other fella. 'I have it too!'\" Time to move on, he told himself. His political life would include a forging of peace and reconciliation on an island that now wishes to host the 2023 World Cup.

Gilmore faces daunting challenges but weakness of Opposition helps him Edition 3
by
Downey, James
in
Spring, Dick
2013
Besides, [Dick Spring] was 'Old Labour' to the core. [Gilmore], by contrast, emerged from Democratic Left. He played a significant part in bringing about the merger between that party and Labour. Most of the party's supporters, like most of the population at large, accept the necessity for these policies. They may even agree with Gilmore when he complains that Labour has taken too great a share of the \"flak\" and claims that his compliance \"saved the State\". An opinion poll in the 'Sunday Business Post' found that the party's support had risen to 12pc. That may compare poorly with the spectacular general election result in 2011, but it exceeds Labour's historical average of less than 10pc.
