Children's healthcare and parental media engagement in urban China : a culture of anxiety?
This book analyses parental anxieties about their children's healthcare issues in urban China, engaging with wider theoretical debates about modernity, risk and anxiety. It examines the broader social, cultural and historical contexts of parental anxiety by analysing a series of socio-economic changes and population policy changes in post-reform China that contextualise parental experiences. Drawing on Wilkinson's (2001) conceptualisation linking individual's risk consciousness to anxiety, this book analyses the situated risk experiences of parents' and grandparents', looking particularly into their engagement with various types of media. It studies the representations of health issues and health-related risks in a parenting magazine, popular newspapers, commercial advertising and new media, as well as parents' and grandparents' engagement with and response to these media representations.

Yearnings in the meantime

In this book, Xiong Yuezhi and a team of distinguished scholars bring together cutting-edge research on the urban history of Shanghai and the diversity of its distinctive culture. Occupying an interstitial space between Chinese and foreign power, Shanghai from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century experienced almost unimaginably complex developments in its political, social, economic, and cultural history. To untangle this complexity, Xiong and his team have carefully constructed, in thematic and chronological fashion, the interactions between the imperialist powers, foreign settlers, and the Chinese community of Shanghai from the origins of the racially-segregated International Settlement in the 1840s to the internment of foreign settlers in Shanghai during World War II in the 1940s.

Fragmented Dhaka : analysing everyday life with Henri Lefebvre's Theory of production of space
\"Bangladesh's capital city Dhaka is one of the world's fastest growing cities, passing from a population of one million to twelve million people in its extended area with three decades (1970-2000). This confronts its inhabitants , observers as well as planners with contradictions that ask for redefining our ways of living in and thinking about the city. In particular, Western conceptions of public space and urban societies are challenged by a symptomatic fragmentation. This empirical study observes the mega city's everyday spaces and situations directly and with a non-generalising approach. By means of ethnographic field research it describes the production of \"enriched\" or multi functional spaces through everyday life practices, recognising in the inhabitants' appropriation and adaptation processes a potential for sustainable mixed forms of urban development. For the first time, Henri Lefebvre's theory of production of space is applied with all of its implications to an empirical study. City and urbanity emerge then as the result of three continuously interacting and interdependent production processes: physical, mental , and social.\"--p. 4 of cover.

In this ethnographic account, the author introduces and examines the lives of ordinary residents, neighborhoods, and mosque communities to analyze moments and spaces where Muslims and non-Muslims engage with each other and accommodate their respective needs. These accounts show that even in the face of resentment and discrimination, this pious population has indeed become an integral part of the urban community.

Urban violence in the Middle East
