This article asks the central question of how to practically engage in the ongoing production of space at Stellenbosch University (SU) as to reimagine and redefine spaces. Spaces, which affect people indirectly and subconsciously, can act as microaggressions on one hand and places of safety connected to identity on the other. The Visual Redress (VR) project at SU focuses on removing or replacing contentious visual elements on campus and facilitating engagements to alter experiences of places and spaces. The VR project is not only interested in physically transforming the space, but also in facilitating critical dialogue and physical interventions to engage in spatial memory and emotional remembrance. In this article Hauntology is used as a methodology to remember and reflect on visual elements on the Stellenbosch campus of SU and how the memory of the past and the dead in the form of visual elements still haunts the present. These hauntological engagements include crucial interactions with students, lecturers, and the various publics of the university. In this article the researchers will provide an overview of VR at SU and show and discuss the processes of three specific VR projects that were implemented at SU to illustrate the importance of hauntological engagements with the aim of reconstructing spaces.

A comparison of laparoscopic-assisted (LAARP) and posterior sagittal (PSARP) anorectoplasty in the outcome of intermediate and high anorectal malformations : gastro-intestinal
2011
Introduction. Laparoscopic-assisted anorectoplasty (LAARP) has gained popularity since its introduction in 2000. Further evidence is needed to compare its outcome with the gold standard of posterior sagittal anorectoplasty (PSARP). Method. A retrospective review of patients presenting with anorectal malformation (ARM) in the period 2000 - 2009. Demographics, associated abnormalities, and operative and post-operative complications were assessed. The functional outcome in children older than 3 years was assessed, applying the Krickenbeck scoring system and, where possible, by interviewing parents. Patients with cloacal abnormalities were excluded. Patients with a LAARP were compared with those managed by PSARP. Results. Seventy-three patients with ARM were identified during the study period. Male to female ratio was 1.6:1. All 32 low ARMs (perineal and vestibular fistulae) were excluded. Thirty-nine had levator or supra-levator lesions. Twenty males presented with recto-bulbar, 3 with recto-prostatic, and 1 with a recto-vesical fistula; 2 had no fistula; and in 2 the data were insufficient to determine the level. Among the females, 6 had recto-vaginal fistulae, 4 had cloacas and 1 had an ARM without fistula. There were 3 syndromic ARMs (2 trisomy 21 and 1 Baller-Gerold syndrome). One neonate with a long-gap oesophageal atresia had a successful primary LAARP. Seventy-five per cent of all patients had VACTERL associations. Two early deaths after colostomy formation were related to a cardiac anomaly and an oesophageal atresia. In both groups, mean age at anoplasty was 8 months. Twenty of the intermediate / high lesions were treated with LAARP, and 19 by PSARP. There were slightly more complications in the LAARP group; intra-operative injury to the vas deferens and urethra occurred once each. Post-operatively, 2 port-site hernias and 1 case of pelvic sepsis occurred. A poorly sited colostomy caused difficulty in 2 patients. Two patients were converted to laparotomy : severe adhesions in one and a poorly sited stoma in another. Five patients required redo-anoplasty for mucosal prolapse, anal stenosis, incorrect placement of the anus, retraction of the rectum and an ischaemic rectal stricture. Complications in the PSARP group included 2 wound dehiscences, 1 anal stenosis, 3 mucosal prolapses, 1 recurrent fistula and 2 incorrect anal placements requiring redo surgery. The Krickenbeck questionnaire was used in 70% of PSARPs (mean age 5.9 years) and LAARPs (mean age 5.5 years) for a functional assessment. Both groups showed voluntary bowel movements in 14%. Soiling and overflow incontinence was a significant problem. Grade III constipation was less common in the LAARP (14%) than PSARP (21%) group. Four patients in the LAARP group were reliant on regular rectal washouts compared with 6 in the PSARP group. Conclusion. Both LAARP and PSARP can successfully treat ARM but have specific associated problems.

Chasing the ubiquitous RET proto-oncogene in South African MEN2 families - implications for the surgeon : oncology
2010
The RET proto-oncogene (REarranged during Transfection; RET) plays an important role in the causation of many thyroid tumours. Germline RET proto-oncogene missense mutations have been clearly linked to medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) and the inherited cancer syndrome multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN2A, MEN2B). Methods. We investigated a cohort of MEN2-related patients referred to Tygerberg Hospital, W Cape (2003 - 2009). The study cohort was divided into three groups based on pathology (viz. MEN/MTC, phaeochromocytoma, and a miscellaneous group of MEN pathologies). Families with identified high-risk factors were recalled. Serum calcitonin levels were monitored where indicated. DNA was extracted from whole blood by standard techniques and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) products screened for RET gene variations by heteroduplex singlestrand duplication techniques (heteroduplex single-strand conformation polymorphism analysis) being validated with automated sequencing techniques showing conformational variants in acrylamide gel. Results. We screened 40 persons, male/female ratio 1:1.5. Three ethnic groups were represented (white (12), black (11) and mixed race (17)). Nine were index MTC cases, 5 phaeochromocytoma, 3 Hirschsprung's disease- MEN associations and 2 miscellaneous (1 neuroblastoma, 1 intestinal neuronal dysplasia), while 1 fell into the MEN2B category. The remaining 19 were unaffected relatives screened for carrier status, among whom a familial recurrence was observed in 7. On genetic testing, an RET point mutation at the highrisk 634 cysteine allele was identified in 11 cases. A further cysteine radical mutation at the 620 position was related to MEN2 in 3 families plus 1 other family referred from elsewhere. Other less-recognised gene variations were detected throughout the RET gene in 70% of cases and included the 691 position on codon 11 (11 cases); the 432 position (4 cases, 1 homozygous) intronic mutations on exon 4 (1 case); and an IVS19-37G/C and a D1017N variation in exon 19 in 2 MEN families. Fifteen MTC patients have had thyroidectomies, of which 2 were prophylactic (C-cell hyperplasia; early occult MTC). A further 3 are awaiting prophylactic surgery. Conclusion. RET gene mutation carries a risk of MEN2 and MTC in all ethnic groups in South Africa. Prophylactic surgery may prevent MTC, so genetic screening is important to identify and treat high-risk patients.

Oesophageal atresia without tracheooesophageal fistula and an anorectal malformation : advantages of a primary laparoscopically assisted anorectal pull-through : neonatal surgery
2011
We report on a primary laparoscopically assisted anorectal pull-through (LAARP) performed in a neonate with pure oesophageal atresia and imperforate anus with recto-bulbo-urethral fistula, representing a unique case for the LAARP approach owing to the undistended nature of the bowel and sterile meconium. Further evaluation of the applicability of LAARP in the management of infants with anorectal malformations is needed, but in this case it held major advantages for the patient. A laparoscopically assisted gastrostomy was facilitated during the same procedure, while avoidance of a colostomy and its associated complications also facilitated preservation of the left colon for subsequent use in oesophageal replacement. Long-term outcome remains to be assessed.

The Role of Stellenbosch University's Department of Afrikaans and Dutch in the Development of Afrikaans Lexicography: Development under Dutch Influence. This article investigates the role of Stellenbosch University's Department of Afrikaans and Dutch in the development of Afrikaans lexicography through their involvement in two standard descriptive dictionaries, the Verklarende Handwoordeboek van die Afri-kaanse Taal en Nasionale Woordeboek. This is done against the background of the influence of Dutch on Afrikaans lexicography. The influence of Dutch on both the macro- and microstructures of these dictionaries are investigated. A gradual movement away from Dutch influence and the contribu-tion of these dictionaries to the development of Afrikaans lexicography are also indicated. When corresponding editions of the two dictionaries are compared, Nasionale Woordeboek seems to show less Dutch influence than Verklarende Handwoordeboek van die Afrikaanse Taal. However, since the beginning of the 1990s (after no new editions Nasionale Woordeboek appeared) Verklarende Hand-woordeboek van die Afrikaanse Taal has slowly but surely started to free itself from Dutch influence. The result of this is that the most recent edition of the Verklarende Handwoordeboek van die Afrikaanse Taal gives evidence of Afrikaans as an independent language that no longer needs to rely on Dutch.

Biography: general
2017
This celebratory volume tells the story of the late Russel Hayman Botman who died suddenly early in his second term as Rector and Vice-Chancellor of Stellenbosch University. Botman’s story is told from his earliest childhood years until his last day as rector. The nature of tributes and celebratory volumes is that it can never be exhaustive. It tells a rich story from limited perspectives. It, however, serves as invitation, stimulus and inspiration to others connected to Botman to also tell their stories about his story.
TECHNOLOGY-CONVERSANT MANAGEMENT EDUCATION: INTRODUCING A NEW DISCIPLINE
In the first quarter of 2013, the Department of Industrial Engineering at the University of Stellenbosch launched a new academic course, Strategic Technology Analysis (STA), as an elective in its M.Sc. in Engineering Management and M.Eng. Industrial Engineering degrees. STA views technology as a knowledge area in its own right, focuses on the inherent characteristics of technology, and explores its natural order. The purpose was to ascertain whether a course of this nature, which offered the outline for a new academic discipline, would be of benefit to a technology-conversant management programme. The course was well-received. It encouraged a greater awareness of technological positioning - i.e., aligning overall corporate strategy with new opportunities across the entire technological frontier. This article describes the background to this initiative, the history of STA, its inherent structure, and its role in professional practice. It then looks ahead at the possible dissemination of this knowledge into different settings where technology-conversant management is taught.

The Financial Reporting Standards Council and its role in terms of the
2010
Both the Companies Act 61 of 1973 (hereinafter \"the Companies Act 1973\") and the Companies Act 71 of 2008 (hereinafter \"the Companies Act 2008\") provide for the Financial Standards Reporting Council (hereinafter \"the Council\"). However, its composition, function and legal form is different under each Act. While the Council was established statutorily as a juristic person under the Companies Act 1973, it will only be established by the Minister of Trade and Industry under the Companies Act 2008. Furthermore, it seems that whether the Council will be granted the status of a juristic person or not is at the Minister's discretion. In contrast with the Companies Act 1973, the Council is thus no longer as autonomous. The Council's role in standard setting has been diminished. It is to be a mere advisory forum to the Minister with nothing but non-binding drafting powers. Both the Companies Act 1973 and the Companies Act 2008 contain provisions regarding Financial Reporting Standards (hereinafter \"FRSs\"). In contrast to the vague provision in the Companies Act 1973, the Companies Act 2008 clearly sets out the legal status of FRSs. They will be regulations (in the form of Government Notices) and will thus be law (delegated legislation). The Council is an organ of state, however in drafting FRSs it does not perform \"administrative action\" in terms of section 1 of the Promotion of Administrative Justice Act 3 of 2000. The wording of the Acts \"in accordance with the International Financial Accounting Standards\" (section 440S(2) of the Companies Act 1973) and \"consistent with the International Financial Accounting Standards\" (section 29(5)(b) of the Companies Act 2008) allows for some discretion to be exercised in the drafting of South African FRSs. The current practice of the Accounting Practices Board to precisely replicate IFRSs is clearly not required by law. It is thus submitted that this practice seems too timid. Contrary to the wording \"may\" in section 29(4) of the Companies Act 2008, the Minister has no discretion as to whether or not to issue FRSs at all. Nor will an overly long delay in issuing FRSs be acceptable. This emanates from a purposive interpretation of section 29(4), read with sections 5 and 7 of the Companies Act 2008.

Translation and survival. The Greek Bible of the ancient Jewish diaspora, Tessa Rajak : reviews
2010
This monograph by Tessa Rajak has its origins in six Grinfield lectures (1995-96) on the Septuagint, which dealt with the original, Old Greek texts and their later reception, as well as de novo writings. The intention of these lectures was to relate two fields of research that have unfortunately remained largely separate in the past: the study of Hellenistic Judaism and the study of the Greek Bible. The book's conclusion was construed in the context of a funded research project entitled 'Greek Bible in the Greco-Roman world', a field to which Rajak has contributed in many publications (e.g. as editor of Jewish Perspectives on Hellenistic Rulers. Berkeley, California: University of California Press, 2007).
