Billig] left, the division had an acting chief, and Colonel [Michael J. Barry] was being groomed to take over. But at least two colleagues at Bethesda complained that Colonel Barry was ''rough'' and ''rusty,'' Dr. [E. Stephen Amis Jr.] said, so Dr. Barry returned to the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. The captain said that both he and the senior surgical staff had become ''supersensitized'' to the conduct of cardiothoracic surgery. When ''enough questions were raised'' about Dr. Barry's technique, he said, Bethesda felt that further observation of Dr. Barry was required.
