Heart Rate Monitor
This chapter discusses the purpose, principle of operation, specifications, and applications of heart rate monitor (HRM). The HRM is designed to measure heart rate in real time. Most of the HRMs are based on picking up an ECG signal from the surface of the body. HRMs generally come as two types: chest‐strap models and strapless models. All personal HRMs generally display the time of workout and give out continuous, average, high, and low heart rate data. The HRM has two distinct parts: the transmitter part and the receiver part. The circuit in the transmitter part has an analog front end, which captures the ECG signal, amplifies it in a precision instrumentation amplifier, and filters the signal to remove undesirable noise. HRMs are particularly useful for measuring heart rate during cardiovascular exercise, such as walking, running, hiking, climbing, and skiing.
