Strategy, evolution, and war : from apes to artificial intelligence
This book is about the psychological and biological bases of strategy making in war as they have evolved in humans over our history as a species. The book is also a cautionary preview of how Artificial Intelligence (AI) will revolutionize strategy more than any development in the last three thousand years of military history. Machines will make important decisions about war on both sides, and they may do so without input from humans. Kenneth Payne describes strategy as an evolved package of conscious and unconscious behaviors with roots in our primate ancestry. Pre-Deployment Stress, Mental Health, and Help-Seeking Behaviors Among Marines
As part of an evaluation of the Marine Corps Operational Stress Control and Readiness (OSCAR) program, this report describes the methods and findings of a large survey of marines who were preparing for a deployment to Iraq or Afghanistan in 2010 or 2011. The results are among the first to shed light on the pre-deployment mental health status of marines, as well as the social resources they draw on when coping with stress and their attitudes about seeking help for stress-related problems.

Adolescents and War
Hundreds of thousands of children are forced or legally recruited combatants in no fewer than 70 warring parties across the world. In addition to these child soldiers, thousands of youth voluntarily participate in politically related conflict. Why, how, and in what capacities are such large numbers of teenagers involved in war, and how are they affected? This book brings together world experts in an evidence-based volume to thoroughly understand and document the intricacies of youth who have had substantial involvement in political violence. Contributors argue that the assumption that youth are automatically debilitated by the violence they experience is much too simplistic: effective care for youth must include an awareness of their motives and beliefs, the roles they played in the conflict, their relationships with others, and the opportunities available to them after their experiences with war. Behavioral economics and nuclear weapons
\"Recent discoveries in psychology and neuroscience have improved our understanding of why our decision making processes fail to match standard social science assumptions about rationality. As researchers such as Daniel Kahneman, Amos Tversky, and Richard Thaler have shown, people often depart in systematic ways from the predictions of the rational actor model of classic economic thought because of the influence of emotions, cognitive biases, an aversion to loss, and other strong motivations and values. These findings about the limits of rationality have formed the basis of behavioral economics, an approach that has attracted enormous attention in recent years. This collection of essays applies the insights of behavioral economics to the study of nuclear weapons policy. Behavioral economics gives us a more accurate picture of how people think and, as a consequence, of how they make decisions about whether to acquire or use nuclear arms. Such decisions are made in real-world circumstances in which rational calculations about cost and benefit are intertwined with complicated emotions and subject to human limitations. Strategies for pursuing nuclear deterrence and nonproliferation should therefore, argue the contributors, account for these dynamics in a systematic way. The contributors to this collection examine how a behavioral approach might inform our understanding of topics such as deterrence, economic sanctions, the nuclear nonproliferation regime, and U.S. domestic debates about ballistic missile defense. Green HRM, psychological green climate and pro-environmental behaviors: An efficacious drive towards environmental performance in China
This study is undertaken to examine that how Green human resource management practices heightens environmental performance via employees’ psychological green climate and pro-environmental behaviors. It also assesses the moderating role of environmental knowledge between pro-environmental behaviors and organizational environmental performance that was almost unnoticed in the preceding studies. Data were collected from the employees who were directly engaged with the implementation of green practices in manufacturing firms located in Jiangsu, China. 450 employees completed the questionnaires and finally, 370 valid responses the green HRM practices were used for the PLS-SEM analysis. The analytical findings revealed that the green HRM practices and corporate environmental strategy are positively related to the psychological green climate that subsequently leads to generate pro-environmental behaviors in employees. Furthermore, the results shed light on the precise development of the corporate level environmental strategy to motivate employees for the creation of an eco-friendly workplace leading to optimizing environmental performance. Further, results postulate that environmental knowledge moderates between pro-environmental behaviors and environmental performance. This research is an extension of existing literature by adding the predictor of corporate environmental strategy as one of the significant antecedents of pro-environmental behaviors and environmental performance. Secondly, it contributes to the existing body of literature through the incorporation of environmental knowledge as a moderator between pro-environmental behaviors and environmental performance. This research study provides valuable practical implications to the top management, and policymakers for ensuring the commitment of employees towards implementation of Green human resource management practices and corporate environmental strategy to achieve environmental performance.
Atomic anxiety : deterrence, taboo and the non-use of U.S. nuclear weapons
\"Centering on the concept of 'Atomic Anxiety,' this study offers a novel perspective on one of the most important and longstanding puzzles of international politics: the non-use of U.S. nuclear weapons. It explains how emotion is at the heart of nuclear non-use, and explores the intricate interplay of the two most prominent mechanisms said to cause nuclear non-use in particular: nuclear deterrence and the nuclear taboo. Psychological distress, burnout, and coping strategies among Nigerian primary school teachers: a school-based cross-sectional study
The teaching profession is highly stressed job. A high level of stress is associated with poor health outcomes, such as burnout and psychological distress. Therefore, teachers' use of coping styles becomes imperative. However, relatively little is known about primary school teachers' psychological distress, burnout, coping strategies, and associated factors in Nigeria. The study investigated psychological distress, burnout, coping strategies among primary schools, and associated factors in Nigeria. A total of 264 teachers aged 20-59 years participated in the study between May 2019 to October 2019. Questionnaires on psychological distress, burnout, coping strategies, and demographic profile form were used for data collection. Factors associated with psychological distress, burnout, and coping strategies were identified using t-test, univariate ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, Chi-square test, and hierarchical linear regression analysis. Of 264 participants enrolled for the study, 253 responded, giving a response rate of 95.8%. The prevalence of psychological distress and burnout was 69.9% (176/253) and 36.0% (91/253), respectively. Sex (β = 0.158), a high level of emotional exhaustion (β = 0.193) and reduced personal accomplishment (β = 0.358), adoption of problem-focused strategies (β = 0.904), and dysfunctional strategies (β = 0.340) were positively associated with psychological distress. Age (β = - 0.338), academic qualification (β = - 0.210), and income level (β = - 0.146) were inversely associated with psychological distress, which together explained 51.5% of the total variance. Psychological distress (β = 0.275 vs. β = 0.404) was significantly associated with emotional exhaustion (EE) and reduced personal accomplishment (PA) and explained 11.4 and 24.2% of the variance in EE and reduced PA, respectively. The high prevalence of psychological distress and burnout among teachers should receive urgent attention. Teachers' training curricula should include developing interpersonal skills, stress management abilities, and resilience to equip them for the job. Also, teacher training curricula should integrate mental health promotion interventions.
