Mirror symmetry for G 2-manifolds: twisted connected sums and dual tops
Abstract Recently, at least 50 million of novel examples of compact G 2 holonomy manifolds have been constructed as twisted connected sums of asymptotically cylindrical Calabi-Yau threefolds. The purpose of this paper is to study mirror symmetry for compactifications of Type II superstrings in this context. We focus on G 2 manifolds obtained from building blocks constructed from dual pairs of tops, which are the closest to toric CY hypersurfaces, and formulate the analogue of the Batyrev mirror map for this class of G 2 holonomy manifolds, thus obtaining several millions of novel dual superstring backgrounds. In particular, this leads us to conjecture a plethora of novel exact dualities among the corresponding 2d N 𝓝 = 1 sigma models.
New G 2-conifolds in M-theory and their field theory interpretation
Abstract A recent theorem of Foscolo-Haskins-Nordström [1] which constructs complete G 2-holonomy orbifolds from circle bundles over Calabi-Yau cones can be utilised to construct and investigate a large class of generalisations of the M-theory flop transition. We see that in many cases a UV perturbative gauge theory appears to have an infrared dual described by a smooth G 2-holonomy background in M-theory. Various physical checks of this proposal are carried out affirmatively.
On TCS G 2 manifolds and 4D emergent strings
Abstract In this note, we study the Swampland Distance Conjecture in TCS G 2 manifold compactifications of M-theory. In particular, we are interested in testing a refined version — the Emergent String Conjecture, in settings with 4d N = 1 supersymmetry. We find that a weakly coupled, tensionless fundamental heterotic string does emerge at the infinite distance limit characterized by shrinking the K3-fiber in a TCS G 2 manifold. Such a fundamental tensionless string leads to the parametrically leading infinite tower of asymptotically massless states, which is in line with the Emergent String Conjecture. The tensionless string, however, receives quantum corrections. We check that these quantum corrections do modify the volume of the shrinking K3-fiber via string duality and hence make the string regain a non-vanishing tension at the quantum level, leading to a decompactification. Geometrically, the quantum corrections modify the metric of the classical moduli space and are expected to obstruct the infinite distance limit. We also comment on another possible type of infinite distance limit in TCS G 2 compactifications, which might lead to a weakly coupled fundamental type II string theory.
Bi-η and bi-λ deformations of ℤ 4 permutation supercosets
Abstract Integrable string sigma models on AdS3 backgrounds with 16 supersymmetries have the distinguishing feature that their superisometry group is a direct product. As a result the deformation theory of these models is particularly rich since the two supergroups in the product can be deformed independently. We construct bi-η and bi-λ deformations of two classes of ℤ 4 permutation supercoset sigma models, which describe sectors of the Green-Schwarz and pure-spinor string worldsheet theories on type II AdS3 backgrounds with pure R-R flux. We discuss an important limit of these models when one supergroup is undeformed. The associated deformed supergravity background should preserve 8 supersymmetries and is expected to have better properties than the full bi-deformation. As a step towards investigating the quantum properties of these models, we study the two-loop RG flow of the bosonic truncation of the bi-λ deformation.
Emergent strings from infinite distance limits
A bstract As a refinement of the Swampland Distance Conjecture, we propose that a quantum gravitational theory in an infinite distance limit of its moduli space either decompactifies, or reduces to an asymptotically tensionless, weakly coupled string theory. We support our claim by classifying, as special cases, the behaviour of M-Theory and Type IIA string theory compactifications on Calabi-Yau three-folds at infinite distances in Kähler moduli space. The analysis comprises three parts: we first classify the possible infinite distance limits in the classical Kähler moduli space of a Calabi-Yau three-fold. Each such limit at finite volume is characterized by a universal fibration structure, for which the generic fiber shrinking in the limit is either an elliptic curve, a K3 surface, or an Abelian surface. In the second part we focus on M-Theory and investigate the nature of the towers of asymptotically massless states that arise from branes wrapped on the shrinking fibers. Depending on which of the three classes of fibrations are considered, we obtain decompactification to F-Theory, or a theory with a unique asymptotically tensionless, weakly coupled heterotic or Type II string, respectively. The latter probes a dual D-manifold which is in general non-geometric. In addition to the intrinsic string excitations, towers of states from M2-branes along non-contractible curves become light and correspond to further wrapping and winding modes of the tensionless heterotic or Type II string. In the third part of the analysis, we consider Type IIA string theory on Calabi-Yau three-folds and show that quantum effects obstruct taking finite volume infinite distance limits in the Kähler moduli space. The only possible infinite distance limit which is not a decompactification limit involves K3-fibrations with string scale fiber volume and gives rise to an emergent tensionless heterotic string.
E 9 exceptional field theory. Part I. The potential
We construct the scalar potential for the exceptional field theory based on the affine symmetry group E9. The fields appearing in this potential live formally on an infinite-dimensional extended spacetime and transform under E9 generalised diffeomorphisms. In addition to the scalar fields expected from D = 2 maximal supergravity, the invariance of the potential requires the introduction of new constrained scalar fields. Other essential ingredients in the construction include the Virasoro algebra and indecomposable representations of E9. Upon solving the section constraint, the potential reproduces the dynamics of either eleven-dimensional or type IIB supergravity in the presence of two isometries.
Emergent strings, duality and weak coupling limits for two-form fields
A bstract We systematically analyse weak coupling limits for 2-form tensor fields in the presence of gravity. Such limits are significant for testing various versions of the Weak Gravity and Swampland Distance Conjectures, and more broadly, the phenomenon of emergence. The weak coupling limits for 2-forms correspond to certain infinite-distance limits in the moduli space of string compactifications, where asymptotically tensionless, solitonic strings arise. These strings are identified as weakly coupled fundamental strings in a dual frame, which makes the idea of emergence manifest. Concretely we first consider weakly coupled tensor fields in six-dimensional compactifications of F-theory, where the arising tensionless strings play the role of dual weakly coupled heterotic strings. As the main part of this work, we consider certain infinite distance limits of Type IIB strings on K3 surfaces, for which we show that the asymptotically tensionless strings describe dual fundamental Type IIB strings, again on K3 surfaces. By contrast the analogous weak coupling limits of M-theory compactifications are found to correspond to an F-theory limit where an extra dimension emerges rather than tensionless strings. We comment on extensions of our findings to four-dimensional compactifications.
Compactifications of 6d N \\ N \\ = (1, 0) SCFTs with non-trivial Stiefel-Whitney classes
We consider compactifications of very Higgsable 6dN\\[ N \\]=(1, 0) SCFTs on T2 with non-trivial Stiefel-Whitney classes (or equivalently ’t Hooft magnetic fluxes) introduced for their flavor symmetry groups. These systems can also be studied as twisted S1 compactifications of the corresponding 5d theories. We deduce various properties of the resulting 4d N\\[ N \\]=2 SCFTs by combining these two viewpoints. In particular, we find that all 4d rank-1 N\\[ N \\]=2 SCFTs with a dimension-6 Coulomb branch operator with flavor symmetry e\\[ e \\]8, usp\\[ usp \\](10), su\\[ su \\](4) and su\\[ su \\](3) can be uniformly obtained by starting from a single-tensor theory in 6d.We also have a mostly independent appendix where we propose a rule to determine the Coulomb branch dimensions of 4dN\\[ N \\]=2 theories obtained by T2 compactifications of 6d very Higgsable theories with and without Stiefel-Whitney twist.
Quantum corrections in 4d N = 1 infinite distance limits and the weak gravity conjecture
A bstract We study quantum corrections in four-dimensional theories with N = 1 supersymmetry in the context of Quantum Gravity Conjectures. According to the Emergent String Conjecture, infinite distance limits in quantum gravity either lead to decompactification of the theory or result in a weakly coupled string theory. We verify this conjecture in the framework of N = 1 supersymmetric F-theory compactifications to four dimensions including perturbative α′ as well as non-perturbative corrections. After proving uniqueness of the emergent critical string at the classical level, we show that quantum corrections obstruct precisely those limits in which the scale of the emergent critical string would lie parametrically below the Kaluza-Klein scale. Limits in which the tension of the asymptotically tensionless string sits at the Kaluza-Klein scale, by contrast, are not obstructed. In the second part of the paper we study the effect of quantum corrections for the Weak Gravity Conjecture away from the strict weak coupling limit. We propose that gauge threshold corrections and mass renormalisation effects modify the super-extremality bound in four dimensions. For the infinite distance limits in F-theory the classical super-extremality bound is generically satisfied by a sublattice of states in the tower of excitations of an emergent heterotic string. By matching the F-theory α ′-corrections to gauge threshold corrections of the dual heterotic theory we predict how the masses of this tower must be renormalised in order for the Weak Gravity Conjecture to hold at the quantum level.
