Informational Architectures of the SSA and Knud Lönberg-Holm
This paper offers an account of the unusual protosystemic and informational approach to architecture that emerged in the early 1930’s within the largely unknown Structural Study Associates (SSA), a circle of architects around Buckminster Fuller. It examines the design of a dynamic information system for architects by SSA members Knud Lönberg-Holm and Carl Theodore Larson and compares them to pre- and post-war knowledge indexing systems and world projects. This study also explores the systems-oriented positions outlined by these architects. This provides a view of American architecture of the era that counters the one presented by the canonical International Style Exhibition of 1932, which essentially edited out the more variegated approaches to modern architecture and technology as represented by the SSA and especially Lönberg-Holm.
Structure, function and regulation of the hsp90 machinery
Heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90) is an ATP-dependent molecular chaperone which is essential in eukaryotes. It is required for the activation and stabilization of a wide variety of client proteins and many of them are involved in important cellular pathways. Since Hsp90 affects numerous physiological processes such as signal transduction, intracellular transport, and protein degradation, it became an interesting target for cancer therapy. Structurally, Hsp90 is a flexible dimeric protein composed of three different domains which adopt structurally distinct conformations. ATP binding triggers directionality in these conformational changes and leads to a more compact state. To achieve its function, Hsp90 works together with a large group of cofactors, termed co-chaperones. Co-chaperones form defined binary or ternary complexes with Hsp90, which facilitate the maturation of client proteins. In addition, posttranslational modifications of Hsp90, such as phosphorylation and acetylation, provide another level of regulation. They influence the conformational cycle, co-chaperone interaction, and inter-domain communications. In this review, we discuss the recent progress made in understanding the Hsp90 machinery.
Convergent creative thinking performance is associated with white matter structures: Evidence from a large sample study
In laboratory settings, creativity is measured using tasks of divergent as well as convergent thinking. It has been suggested that brain connectivity is important for creativity. In the present study, we investigated the associations of convergent thinking performance of compound Remote Associates Test (CRAT) with fractional anisotropy (FA) in diffusion tensor imaging and regional white matter (WM) volume (rWMV) in voxel-based morphometry in a large sample of healthy young adults (360 males and 280 females; mean age: 20.9 years, SD = 1.6). We showed that CRAT performance was positively correlated with WM pathway property (i.e., FA) in the left fronto-occipital fasciculus and the left inferior longitudinal fasciculus, which play important roles in processing of language and concept. Further, CRAT performance was negatively correlated with rWMV in the widespread frontal temporal subcortical and cerebellar WM areas, suggesting the unique association of convergent thinking with WM connectivity. •White matter structures associated with convergent thinking (CRAT) performance.•Positive correlation of FA was seen in the left lateralized language related tract.•Negative correlation of rWMV was seen in the widespread white matter areas.•Results suggest that unique association of convergent thinking with white matter.
Attitudes of students toward domestic violence and children’s rights: a cross-sectional study and structural equation model analysis
PurposeThis study aims to investigate the attitude of students toward domestic violence (DV) and children’s rights.Design/methodology/approachA quantitative cross-sectional descriptive questionnaire design method was used to collect data. The participants of the study were university levels of associate degree students in Eastern Turkey.FindingsResults showed that female students were more likely to approve of DV, and this difference was statistically significant. The structural equation modeling analysis revealed a positive and significant relationship between students' attitude toward children’s rights and their overall attitude toward DV.Originality/valueThis research suggests that the participants had a positive view of DV and a moderate attitude toward children’s rights. Therefore, it is recommended to enhance the attitude and awareness of future health professionals about children’s rights and DV.
Labor market returns to community colleges
(IAB2).
