Structural Health Monitoring of Large Civil Engineering Structures
Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) provides the facilities for in-service monitoring of structural performance and damage assessment, and is a key element of condition based maintenance and damage prognosis. This comprehensive book brings readers up to date on the most important changes and advancements in the structural health monitoring technologies applied to civil engineering structures. It covers all aspects required for such monitoring in the field, including sensors and networks, data acquisition and processing, damage detection techniques and damage prognostics techniques. The book also includes a number of case studies showing how the techniques can be applied in the development of sustainable and resilient civil infrastructure systems. This book offers in-depth chapter coverage of: Sensors and Sensing Technology for Structural Monitoring; Data Acquisition, Transmission, and Management; Structural Damage Identification Techniques; Modal Analysis of Civil Engineering Structures; Finite Element Model Updating; Vibration Based Damage Identification Methods; Model Based Damage Assessment Methods; Monitoring Based Reliability Analysis and Damage Prognosis; and Applications of SHM Strategies to Large Civil Structures.
Bayesian methods for structural dynamics and civil engineering
Bayesian methods are a powerful tool in many areas of science and engineering, especially statistical physics, medical sciences, electrical engineering, and information sciences. They are also ideal for civil engineering applications, given the numerous types of modeling and parametric uncertainty in civil engineering problems. For example, earthquake ground motion cannot be predetermined at the structural design stage. Complete wind pressure profiles are difficult to measure under operating conditions. Material properties can be difficult to determine to a very precise level – especially concrete, rock, and soil. For air quality prediction, it is difficult to measure the hourly/daily pollutants generated by cars and factories within the area of concern. It is also difficult to obtain the updated air quality information of the surrounding cities. Furthermore, the meteorological conditions of the day for prediction are also uncertain. These are just some of the civil engineering examples to which Bayesian probabilistic methods are applicable. * Familiarizes readers with the latest developments in the field * Includes identification problems for both dynamic and static systems * Addresses challenging civil engineering problems such as modal/model updating * Presents methods applicable to mechanical and aerospace engineering * Gives engineers and engineering students a concrete sense of implementation * Covers real-world case studies in civil engineering and beyond, such as: * structural health monitoring * seismic attenuation * finite-element model updating * hydraulic jump * artificial neural network for damage detection * air quality prediction * Includes other insightful daily-life examples * Companion website with MATLAB code downloads for independent practice * Written by a leading expert in the use of Bayesian methods for civil engineering problems This book is ideal for researchers and graduate students in civil and mechanical engineering or applied probability and statistics. Practicing engineers interested in the application of statistical methods to solve engineering problems will also find this to be a valuable text. Stone age science : buildings and structures
\"Leo teaches his cat Pallas all about buildings and structures by applying his knowledge of science to their stone age world. Engaging illustrations and stories provide a fun introduction to science concepts, including ramps, forces and loads, tension, and more. Information boxes accompany each story to explore real applications of buildings and structures in the natural and designed world.\"-- Provided by publisher.
Design and Construction of Buildings and Foundations with Illustrative Examples
This book is an essential guide to analysis and design of tall buildings and foundations. The book covers the basic consideration of tall buildings, selection of a suitable structural form, structural materials, and analytical methods for several types of construction loadings. The last chapter of this book presents an illustrated case study for learners. An appendix of different structural analysis calculations rounds up the book. The detailed analysis and learning material presented in the book is intended to enable readers to master the basics and understand how to execute practical civil engineering projects. Key features: - Covers the essentials of skyscraper design and construction in detail with a focus on learning. - Covers building modelling parameters and criteria with design reports and computer inputs. - Includes analysis and notes for foundation layout, loadings and the excavation and lateral support system (ELS). - Includes more than 250 detailed illustrations of concepts, construction plans and photos from real projects. - Includes references and appendices for advanced readers. - Includes more details than most of the similar texts, with practical guidelines based on references from many buildings and foundation projects. The authors have extensive research and practical experience of buildings and foundation analysis and design in Hong Kong, and have actively served as regional engineering committee members overseeing structural and foundation disciplines. This book is intended as a primary resource for senior undergraduate and graduate students as well as to engineers and professors in the field of civil engineering and building modeling. A basic knowledge about structural and foundation engineering is required for adequate understanding of the content.
Advanced Modelling Techniques in Structural Design
The successful design and construction of iconic new buildings relies on a range of advanced technologies, in particular on advanced modelling techniques. In response to the increasingly complex buildings demanded by clients and architects, structural engineers have developed a range of sophisticated modelling software to carry out the necessary structural analysis and design work. Advanced Modelling Techniques in Structural Design introduces numerical analysis methods to both students and design practitioners. It illustrates the modelling techniques used to solve structural design problems, covering most of the issues that an engineer might face, including lateral stability design of tall buildings; earthquake; progressive collapse; fire, blast and vibration analysis; non-linear geometric analysis and buckling analysis . Resolution of these design problems are demonstrated using a range of prestigious projects around the world, including the Buji Khalifa; Willis Towers; Taipei 101; the Gherkin; Millennium Bridge; Millau viaduct and the Forth Bridge, illustrating the practical steps required to begin a modelling exercise and showing how to select appropriate software tools to address specific design problems.
Structural Vibration
This book offers an introduction to structural vibration and highlights the importance of the natural frequencies in design. It focuses on free vibrations for analysis and design of structures and machine and presents the exact vibration solutions for strings, membranes, beams, and plates. This book emphasizes the exact solutions for free transverse vibration of strings, membranes, beams, and plates. It explains the intrinsic, fundamental, and unexpected features of the solutions in terms of known functions as well as solutions determined from exact characteristic equations.
