Investigating Scene Segmentation for Improving Satellite-Derived Bathymetry Accuracy and Coverage

Seafloor bathymetry is essential for assisting safe maritime navigation through up-to-date navigational charts. Satellite-derived bathymetry (SDB) can serve as a low-cost, rapid alternative or supplement to shipborne and airborne surveys, particularly for mapping remote and shallow areas. However, the accuracy of SDB is relatively low compared to other methods, and the spatial coverage is often limited. One contributing factor is that conventional SDB approaches assume that bottom type and water clarity remain constant throughout the entire area of interest, such that a single linear model can be used to retrieve bathymetric information. To enhance the accuracy and coverage of depth estimation, this work explores the segmentation of the scene into smaller spatial units and the incorporation of the water-column contribution in the SDB equation. The segmentation methods consisted of six approaches: three horizontal, one vertical (by depth), and two combinations of horizontal and vertical methods. Utilizing Sentinel-2 images over the Dry Tortugas and the St. Thomas East End Reserve, it was found that, with one exception, the geographic segmentation methods improved the accuracy of depth estimation. Accuracy improvements of up to 60% were observed, although the vertical segmentation results showed some indications of potential overfitting to the reference data, particularly at the smaller vertical bin sizes. Overall, the results provide strong indication that scene segmentation can improve both the accuracy and coverage of depth estimates compared to traditional SDB methods that employ only a single model.
Music in Gestalt Theory, Morphology and Music Therapy
The article deals with the connection between music, Gestalt theory and music therapy. It sheds light on the historical foundations of Gestalt theory and its application in music psychology, particularly from the perspective of morphological psychology. An examination method from morphological music therapy is presented, with which a psychological analysis of musical improvisations is possible in four versions. A clinical study demonstrates the significance for therapeutic practice by highlighting the relationship between musical forms of expression and psychological processes.
Blaustein’s Phenomenological Psychology. Between Husserl and Stumpf
The article explores the idea of psychology and phenomenology in Blaustein’s writings as well as its relation to two conceptions of phenomenology: Husserl’s and Stumpf ’s, respectively. The article is divided into five sections. In section 1, a historical background of the reception of Husserl’s and Stumpf ’s ideas in Blaustein is discussed. Section 2 concerns the conception of phenomenology in Husserl and in Stumpf regarding its subject matter. Section 3 discusses the ambivalent status of phenomenology in Blaustein’s theoretical project. Section 4 confronts Blaustein’s understanding of phenomenology with that of Husserl and of Stumpf. Section 5 summarizes the discussion of the similarities and differences between Blaustein, on the one hand, and Husserl and Stumpf, on the other hand. I argue that with regard to the question of the subject matter of phenomenology, Blaustein is closer to Husserl’s phenomenology rather than Stumpf ’s.
Use of ICEsat-2 and Sentinel-2 Open Data for the Derivation of Bathymetry in Shallow Waters: Case Studies in Sardinia and in the Venice Lagoon
Despite the high accuracy of conventional acoustic hydrographic systems, measurement of the seabed along coastal belts is still a complex problem due to the limitations arising from shallow water. In addition to traditional echo sounders, airborne LiDAR also suffers from high application costs, low efficiency, and limited coverage. On the other hand, remote sensing offers a practical alternative for the extraction of depth information, providing fast, reproducible, low-cost mapping over large areas to optimize and minimize fieldwork. Satellite-derived bathymetry (SDB) techniques have proven to be a promising alternative to supply shallow-water bathymetry data. However, this methodology is still limited since it usually requires in situ observations as control points for multispectral imagery calibration and bathymetric validation. In this context, this paper illustrates the potential for bathymetric derivation conducted entirely from open satellite data, without relying on in situ data collected using traditional methods. The SDB was performed using multispectral images from Sentinel-2 and bathymetric data collected by NASA’s ICESat-2 on two areas of relevant interest. To assess outcomes’ reliability, bathymetries extracted from ICESat-2 and derived from Sentinel-2 were compared with the updated and reliable data from the BathyDataBase of the Italian Hydrographic Institute.
From Interest to Intentionality. The Influence of Carl Stumpf on Edmund Husserl’s Phenomenology of Attention
In the vast landscape of Edmund Husserl’s investigations, the theme of attention has long been neglected: the dispersal of his treatment of the topic across works from various years, the use of a diversified lexicon, and an intrinsic difficulty in identifying the attentional phenomenon itself have all contributed to the long-standing underestimation of this theme. Following a line of study that – especially after the publication of volume XXXVIII of the Husserliana (Wahrnehmung und Aufmerksamkeit) – has renewed interest in this topic, this article aims to contribute to the historical as well as theoretical reconstruction of Edmund Husserl’s phenomenology of attention. In particular, we will focus on the contribution of a figure who had a crucial impact on Husserl’s development and the framing of the phenomenological method itself, namely Carl Stumpf, concentrating especially on the engagement that the father of phenomenology had with him, starting from the treatment of attention through the concept of interest. This debate will be reconstructed from the examination of (1) part of the Göttingen Lectures of 1904-05, explicitly dedicated to attention; (2) a very early but theoretically significant Husserlian manuscript, “Noten zur Lehre von Aufmerksamkeit und Interesse” (1893); and (3) Stumpf’s own work, particularly Tonpsychologie, where the interpretation of attention as “Lust am Bemerken” is formulated and with which Husserl engages in a rigorous critical dialogue. On the basis of this confrontation, we will highlight from an original perspective Husserl’s significant debt to the psychology of the time, from which he not only borrowed certain themes and a general interest in the simplest levels of experience, but also the basic outlines of notions that would serve as the foundation for the development of some crucial concepts of transcendental phenomenology such as that of intentionality. Moreover, it is through the examination of attention that the profound continuity of Husserl’s reflection becomes apparent, evidenced by the extraordinarily early emergence of crucial and typical notions of his later phase (known as “genetic phenomenology”) during these formative years, even before the phenomenological method was fully developed.
With or without phenomena? Phenomenology between Stumpf and Husserl
This article intends to identify what is at stake in Stumpf’s critical assessment of Husserl’s transcendental phenomenology as a “phenomenology without phenomena”. After reconstructing the main arguments through which these two conceptions of phenomenology argue against each other, it is argued that the main issue of this debate concerns the value that is attributed to the idea of intentionality in the definition of the phenomenological program, and consequently in the very definition of the “phenomenon”. Ultimately, the question risen is that of the relationship between phenomenology and philosophy itself, depending on whether phenomenology is conceived as a propedeutic science (Stumpf) or as a fundamental science (Husserl).

The volume aims at a critical assessment of Carl Stumpf's philosophy and an evaluation of his place in the School of Brentano and in the phenomenological movement. The book contains 15 original essays, unpublished writings by Stumpf and a complete bibliography.
Paul A. Castelfranco (1921–2021): a scientist par excellence, a man of lasting faith, and ever a humanist
We present here the life and the work of Paul A. Castelfranco (1921–2021), a very special person who was not only a top chemist of chlorophyll biosynthesis, but also made major contributions on fatty acid oxidation, acetate metabolism and cellular organization. He led an extraordinary and exemplary life as a human being. We present here both his personal life as well as his scientific life, which is followed by reminiscences by William Breidenbach, Kevin Smith, Alan Stemler, Ann Castelfranco, and John Castelfranco. As the subtitle of this Tribute implies, till the end Paul was a scientist par excellence, an intellectual with unlimited curiosity, a humanist, and a man of enduring religious faith. We all miss him dearly.
Comparative analyses for determining shallow water bathymetry potential of multispectral UAVs: case study in Tavşan Island, Sea of Marmara
Recently, the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in bathymetric applications has become very popular due to the rapid and periodic acquisition of high spatial resolution data that provide detailed modeling of shallow water body depths and obtaining geospatial information. In UAV-based bathymetry, the sensor characteristics, imaging geometries, and the quality of radiometric and geometric calibrations of the imagery are the basic factors to achieve most reliable results. Digital bathymetric models (DBMs) that enable three-dimensional bottom topography definition of water bodies can be generated using many different techniques. In this paper, the effect of different UAV imaging bands and DBM generation techniques on the quality of bathymetric 3D modeling was deeply analyzed by visual and statistical model-based comparison approaches utilizing reference data acquired by a single-beam echosounder. In total, four different DBMs were generated and evaluated, two from dense point clouds derived from red–green–blue (RGB) single-band and multispectral (MS) five-band aerial photos, and the other two from Stumpf and Lyzenga empirical satellite-based bathymetry (SDB) adapted to UAV data. The applications were performed in the Tavşan Island located in Istanbul, Turkey. The results of statistical model-based analyses demonstrated that the accuracies of the DBMs are arranged as RGB, MS, Lyzenga, and Stumpf from higher to lower and the standard deviation of height differences are between ±0.26 m and ±0.54 m. Visual results indicate that five-band MS DBM performs best in identifying the deepest areas.
Music in the mind and primitive sounds: «only differences in kind»
During his prolific career, the German Jewish scientist Franz Boas (Minden, 1858 - New York, 1942) recognized as the founding father of American Cultural Anthropology – maintained assiduous contacts with the European scientific community, in a privileged way with that of the German area. The contribution addresses the Boasian correspondence with the two directors of the Berliner Phonogramm-Archiv, the philosopher and psychologist Carl Stumpf, and the ethnomusicolo-gist Erich Moritz von Hornbostel. All three were united by a common scientific experimental training and a solid musical education, typical of their Bildungsbuürgertum. With them, Boas consistently shared his fieldwork findings regarding music, sound, and language among the Indians of British Columbia: indeed, their epistolary exchanges intertwine epistemological reflections centered on the study of «exotische Musik» in context with technical problems, derived from the use of phonographic recordings and the relative shipments of wax cylinders by Boas to the Phonographic Archive. So far, the critical literature has not paid particular attention to their correspondence, that offer instead a privileged look in observing the birth of Ethnomusicology, at the time still defined as comparative Musicology (vergleichende Musikwissenschaft). Starting from a biographical contextualization and following the micro-history of the scientific and personal relationship of these scientists, the contribution aims to explore the hypothesis that the emerging Ethnomusicology significantly contributed to the definition of Cultural Anthropology as a discipline. In his painstaking research devoted to the Native Indian sounds and languages, Boas observed indeed what happens if a mind is exposed to a new sound, musical or linguistic context; he had therefore to rigorously deal with the phenomena of mishearing, sound-blindness and biasing filter related to the perception of «new sounds». Thanks to his fieldwork, Boas would endorse a relativistic and “in context” approach to perception and mental representations of sounds, fostering his eventual lifelong, hectic concern about a broaden antiracist theory of human mental functions.
