Vegetation description and data analysis
Vegetation Description and Data Analysis: A Practical Approach, Second Edition is a fully revised and up-dated edition of this key text. The book takes account of recent advances in the field whilst retaining the original reader-friendly approach to the coverage of vegetation description and multivariate analysis in the context of vegetation data and plant ecology. Since the publication of the hugely popular first edition there have been significant developments in computer hardware and software, new key journals have been established in the field and scope and application of vegetation description and analysis has become a truly global field. This new edition includes full coverage of new developments and technologies. This contemporary and comprehensive edition of this well-known and respected textbook will prove invaluable to undergraduate and graduate students in biological sciences, environmental science, geography, botany, agriculture, forestry and biological conservation. Fully international approach Includes illustrative case studies throughout Now with new material on: the nature of plant communities; transitional areas between plant communities; induction and deduction of plant ecology; diversity indices and dominance diversity curves; multivariate analysis in ecology. Accessible, reader-friendly style Now with new and improved illustrations.
Modern analysis of customer surveys : with applications using R
Customer survey studies deals with customers, consumers and user satisfaction from a product or service. In practice, many of the customer surveys conducted by business and industry are analyzed in a very simple way, without using models or statistical methods. Typical reports include descriptive statistics and basic graphical displays. As demonstrated in this book, integrating such basic analysis with more advanced tools, provides insights on non-obvious patterns and important relationships between the survey variables. This knowledge can significantly affect the conclusions derived from a survey.Key features:Provides an integrated, case-studies based approach to analysing customer survey data.Presents a general introduction to customer surveys, within an organization's business cycle.Contains classical techniques with modern and non standard tools.Focuses on probabilistic techniques from the area of statistics/data analysis and covers all major recent developments.Accompanied by a supporting website containing datasets and R scripts.Customer survey specialists, quality managers and market researchers will benefit from this book as well as specialists in marketing, data mining and business intelligence fields.
Analyzing food security using household survey data
Food and nutrition security has emerged as a primary development goal at the top of the global agenda. In 2012 the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) methodology was integrated into a userfriendly software named ADePT-Food Security Module (ADePT-FSM). This book aims to provide the essential guidelines of the use of ADePT-FSM and of its background methodology. It is organized into five chapters: chapter 1 introduces the background concepts of food security and food consumption data; chapter 2 describes the methodology used to derive different food security indicators; chapter 3 discusses the analysis of the derived food security statistics; chapter 4 provides guidelines on how to prepare the input datasets; and chapter 5 explains how to install and use ADePT-FSM. Over the past years, increasing attention has been paid to national household surveys by the international community in order to collect reliable and timely information on food consumption for the purpose of food security assessment. National household surveys are in fact the only available source of information to assess the distribution of food consumption within a country. ADePT-FSM aims to derive consistent and readily available food security statistics from food consumption data collected in national househoudl surveys.
Spatial analysis for radar remote sensing of tropical forests
\"This book is based on authors' extensive involvement in large Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) mapping projects, targeting the health of an important earth ecosystem, the tropical forests. It highlights past achievements, explains the underlying physics that allow the radar practitioners to understand what radars image, and can't yet image, and paves the way for future developments including wavelet-based techniques to estimate tropical forest structural measures combined with InSAR and Lidar techniques. As first book on this topic, this composite approach makes it appealing for students, learning through important case studies ; and for researchers finding new ideas for future studies\"-- Provided by publisher.
On the logical structure of census and survey questionnaires
Skip instructions in census and survey questionnaires result in different groups of persons being eligible for different questions—the logical structure of the questionnaire. Logical structure is important for analyzing census and survey data, for processing raw questionnaire data, and for questionnaire design and testing. We define a simple, general, computer-readable representation of a questionnaire that incorporates information on skip instructions. Algorithms for automatic calculation of questionnaire paths and sets of eligible persons are presented and applied to the Malawi 2008 census questionnaire and IPUMS International sample dataset. The R code provided may be used to reproduce our results and to apply the algorithms to other questionnnaires and datasets. We show that dividing questionnaires into sections is a fundamental tool for understanding and limiting logical complexity. We model questionnaires as programs intended for execution by an interviewer or respondent, rather than by a computer, and represent them by a software design diagram that presents information on questions, responses, and skip instructions in a form that is as readable as a traditional paper questionnaire, while simultaneously providing a precise specification that programmers may use to create an electronic version of the questionnaire.

Application of Immune Genetic Algorithm in Survey Data Processing
The immune genetic algorithm is a kind of heuristic algorithm which simulates the biological immune system and introduces the genetic operator to its immune operator. Conquering the inherent defects of genetic algorithm that the convergence direction can not be easily controlled so as to result in the prematureness;it is characterized by a better global search and memory ability. The basic principles and solving steps of the immune genetic algorithm are briefly introduced in this paper. The immune genetic algorithm is applied to the survey data processing and experimental results show that this method can be practicably and effectively applied to the survey data processing.
