2013
Essays follow rapidly proliferating and resource-intensive Indian urbanism in everyday environments. Case studies on nature conservation in cities, urban housing and slum development, waste management, urban planning, and contestations over the quality of air, water, and sanitation in Delhi and Mumbai illuminate urban ecology perspectives throughout the twentieth century. The collection highlights how struggles over the environment and one's quality of life in urban centers are increasingly framed in terms of their future place in a landscape of global sustainability. The text brings historical particularity and ethnographic nuance to questions of urban ecology and offers novel insight into theoretical and practical debates on urbanism and sustainability.

1999,2000
While the dimensions, levels, and intensity of conflict can vary greatly, so too can the opportunities for conflict resolution. Cultivating Peace presents original case studies from Africa, Asia, and Latin America, interspersed with essays on the cultural dimensions of conflict, the meaning of stakeholder analysis, the impact of development interventions on peace and conflict, and the policy dimensions of conflict management. The case studies present important developing-world experience on moving from conflict to collaborative modes of management. The accompanying essays draw on the case studies, grounding theory in hard-won experience. This cross-fertilization of practical experience with conceptual insight creates a unique dialogue on lessons learned and identifies strategic gaps in our understanding of this complex and important issue.

Sustaining India's Growth Miracle
2008
The economy of India is growing at a rate of 8 percent per year, and its exports of goods and services have more than doubled in the past three years. Considering these trends, economists, scholars, and political leaders across the globe are beginning to wonder whether India's growth can be sustained.
The contributors to this volume analyze the forces behind India's emerging role as a world economic player and identify the hidden weaknesses that, if unaddressed, may slow the country's growth. Chapters suggest how to transform India's primarily rural population into a gainfully employed modern sector; methods to achieve fiscal sustainability and consolidation; infrastructure bottlenecks, especially in terms of finite energy resources; and, given the country's complex electoral government and global political position, the obstacles toward effecting policy reform.
Sustaining India's Growth Miracleis a valuable resource for practitioners, policymakers, students, and scholars. It tackles issues from political, economic, and academic perspectives, and the concluding chapter, a talk given by the commerce and industry minister of India, discusses the country's position as a world power, outlining several reasons for its success and exploring the difficulties that lie ahead.
Integrated land use planning for sustainable agriculture and rural development / edited by M.V. Rao, V. Suresh Babu, K. Suman Chandra, and G. Ravindra Chary
2016
Land represents an important resource for the economic life of a majority of people in the world. The way people handle and use land resources impacts their social and economic well-being as well as the sustained quality of land resources. Land use planning is also integral to water resources development and management for agriculture, industry, drinking water, power generation, etc. This valuable work brings to the forefront the state of practice of land use planning in India, highlighting governmental programs and research with wide-ranging chapters on important topics. The book discusses: the impending impacts of climate change and variability issues have that direct bearing on agricultural land use and rural development, doable technologies that are land-based activities for effective agro-technology transfer strategies and approaches, the huge investments necessary for the effective planning methodologies and approaches, how land use planning activities are likely to improve nutrition and food security and enhance the livelihoods of the small and marginal farmers, the use and reliability of information technology tools, legal frameworks, and much more that are needed to adopt appropriate policies. With high population growth, endemic poverty, and weak existing institutional capacity for land management, India (and other regions of the world) require strong scientific and strategically important land use policies and methods for sustainable development. This book helps to show the way. This volume is published in association with the Centre for Agrarian Studies and Disaster Mitigation of the National Institute of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj (NIRD and PR).

2006
What does the future hold for these giants that are two fastest-growing emerging markets and among the three largest economies in Asia? Their economic muscle is having increasingly far-reaching effects on the global economy. This must-read book draws together analysis and insight from high-level policymakers and advisors in both countries and shows how, for many years, the two countries have cooperated and learned from each other. In addition, the book describes what has (and what has not) worked in each country and offers some concrete suggestions about how each may achieve long-term sustainable development.
LAW, POLICY AND NATIONAL LEGISLATION ON PRESERVATION AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF WETLANDS IN INDIA
2007
Asserts that India needs a comprehensive policy & legislation on wetlands preservation that would ensure the incorporation of the 1971 UN Ramsar Convention on wetlands. The Indian framework should include legal provisions governing wetlands management centered on preservation & sustainable development. Key provisions of the Ramsar Convention are outlined before examining pertinent legislation from other countries as well as what the International Union for the Conservation of Nature & Natural Resources has to say about wetlands management. Attention is then given to Kashmir's ecology & wetlands. D. Edelman
