Teacher Competences for Active Learning in Engineering Education
The implementation of active learning strategies in engineering education still encounters barriers when facing conventional teaching-learning practices. This work aims to contribute to the discussion on teachers’ pedagogical competences required for active learning. This contribution is developed from the perceptions of 205 engineering teachers of Brazilian higher education institutions, centered on significant teaching competences necessary for teachers of engineering courses and how to develop them in the active learning context. The results show that essential competences identified by the participants are (I) teamwork (teachers’ cooperation); (II) teacher–student relationships (empathy); (III) feedback about students’ performance throughout the learning process; (IV) information and communication technology (ICT) competences; (V) selecting and adapting the teaching-learning methodologies to the class context; and (VI) creativity. A complementary logistic regression model suggested that female Ph.D. full-time teachers are more likely to employ active learning. Differences in active learning adoption among Brazilian regions were also captured by the model. The identified competences are essential for the sustainability of the innovation of teaching practices in the context of active learning, which may be used to inform more effective professional training of engineering teachers in the current globalized scenario.
Environmental sustainability using green technologies
\"Environmental Sustainability Using Green Technologies explains the role of green engineering and social responsibility in the development of chemicals, processes, products, and systems. Examining the relationship between economy, ecology, and equality--key factors in developing a sustainable society--this book covers several aspects of environmental sustainability, explores ways to use resources and processes more responsibly, and describes the tools required to overcome various challenges. It outlines the biotechnological applications, techniques, and processes needed to secure sustainable development and ensure long-lasting future success.\"--Publisher's description.
Sustainable Manufacturing
Sustainability enables the development of products with minimal environmental impact coupled with economical and societal benefits. This book provides an understanding of theoretical and practical perspectives pertaining to sustainable manufacturing. The book offers theoretical concepts and practical descriptions of sustainable manufacturing. It provides insights from research and practical applications, as well as industrial case studies, and several illustrations and examples. The book goes on to discuss design strategies that support sustainable manufacturing and includes ISO 14001 and PAS 2050 standards. The book addresses the needs of undergraduate and postgraduate engineering students, academic researchers and industry practitioners.
Green innovation, sustainable development, and circular economy
\"Although green innovation and technology is not new, so far very limited information is available regarding the diversified approaches for green technologies and engineering. This book will highlight the challenges, opportunities, and roadmap for using various approaches in the most cost-effective way\"-- Provided by publisher.
Sustainable Transport for Chinese Cities
The volume is based on papers presented at a workshop on the green transport agenda and its implications for Chinese cities, organised by the World Conference on Transport Research Society in September 2010. The five sections of this volume review the challenges facing urban transport internationally and in China. It considers approaches to policy formulation, the challenge of urban mobility and the development of green sustainable transportation, by reviewing best practice in objective setting, strategy analysis and policy selection, and comparing these with current practice in China. The authors examine passenger transport, and considers a number of current policy interventions in China and compare these with western experience with demand management and new vehicle technologies. Topics include 5D land-use transport model for a high density, rapidly growing city and Contextual requirements for electric vehicles in developed and developing countries. Finally freight and logistics is addressed, including the role of freight villages and milk run strategies, and challenges and policy recommendations for road freight in Shanghai.
Designing sustainable energy for all : sustainable product-service system design applied to distributed renewable energy
This open access book addresses the issue of diffusing sustainable energy access in low- and middle-income contexts. Access to energy is one of the greatest challenges for many people living in low- income and developing contexts, as around 1.4 billion people lack access to electricity. Distributed Renewable Energy systems (DRE) are considered a promising approach to address this challenge and provide energy access to all. However, even if promising, the implementation of DRE systems is not always straightforward. The book analyses, discusses and classifies the promising Sustainable Product-Service System (S.PSS) business models to deliver Distributed Renewable Energy systems in an effective, efficient and sustainable way. Its message is supported with cases studies and examples, discussing the economic, environmental and socioethical benefits as well as its limitations and barriers to its implementation. An innovative design approach is proposed and a set of design tools are supplied, enabling readers to create and develop Sustainable Product-Service System (S.PSS) solutions to deliver Distributed Renewable Energy systems. Practical applications of the book's design approach and tools by companies and practitioners are discussed and the book will be of interest to readers in design, industry, governmental institution, NGOs as well as researchers.
Technologies for Sustainable Development: Proceedings of the 7th Nirma University International Conference on Engineering (NUiCONE 2019), November 21-22, 2019, Ahmedabad, India
This volume contains a selection of papers presented at the 7th Nirma University International Conference on Engineering 'NUiCONE 2019'. This conference followed the successful organization of four national conferences and six international conferences in previous years. The main theme of the conference was \"Technologies for Sustainable Development\", which is in line with the \"SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOAL\" established by the United Nations. The conference was organized with many inter-disciplinary technical themes encompassing a broad range of disciplines and enabling researchers, academicians and practitioners to choose between ideas and themes. Besides, NUiCONE-2019 has also presented an exciting new set of events to engage practicing engineers, technologists and technopreneurs from industry through special knowledge sharing sessions involving applied technical papers based on case-study applications, white-papers, panel discussions, innovations and technology products. This proceedings will definitely provide a platform to proliferate new findings among researchers.Advances in Transportation EngineeringEmerging Trends in Water Resources and Environmental EngineeringConstruction Technology and ManagementConcrete and Structural EngineeringFuturistic Power SystemControl of Power Electronics Converters, Drives and E-mobilityAdvanced Electrical Machines and Smart ApparatusChemical Process Development and DesignTechnologies and Green EnvironmentSustainable Manufacturing ProcessesDesign and Analysis of Machine and MechanismEnergy Conservation and ManagementAdvances in Networking TechnologiesMachine Intelligence / Computational IntelligenceAutonomic ComputingControl and AutomationElectronic CommunicationsElectronics Circuits and System DesignSignal Processing
Engineering Education for Sustainability
Understood to be a key issue in modern society, sustainability is characterized by its three essential pillars, namely: the environment, society and the economy. Education plays an important role in how people understand and accept sustainability. The integration of sustainability in engineering education is a relatively new phenomenon, and presenting information about engineering education for sustainability is of great interest to improve communication between professors, researchers and students at universities, institutes and research laboratories. Topics discussed in the book include: • Experiences from 5 years of educating sustainability to computer science students • Review of decision support methods in green and sustainable supply chains • Analyzing the drivers of engineering education for sustainability using the MCDM approach • Visualization technologies in construction education: a comprehensive review of recent advances • A legal framework and compliance with construction safety laws and regulations
