The first book-length study to address Moore’s significance to the Gothic, this volume is also the first to provide in-depth analyses of his spoken-word performances, poetry and prose, as well as his comics and graphic novels. The essays collected here identify the Gothic tradition as perhaps the most significant cultural context for understanding Moore’s work, providing unique insight into its wider social and political dimensions as well as addressing key theoretical issues in Gothic Studies, Comics Studies and Adaptation Studies. Of Slaves and Other Swamp Things
2012
DC Comics’ Swamp Thing series (1984–1987) underwent two major innovations courtesy of British comic book writer Alan Moore. First, Moore reconceptualized the character’s physiological structure as sentient plant matter to make him more versatile, mobile, and intellectually complex. Second, he fixed the character more firmly in space and time by establishing the comic’s setting in and around present-day Houma, Louisiana. Swamp Thing thus offers a more focused engagement with the history of the South and its landscape of horrors, including storylines that grapple with the region’s legacy of slavery. This chapter examines Moore’s depiction of the South and the manner in which Swamp Thing comments upon social and cultural histories of racial oppression. To illustrate a tale of vengeful slaves and unrepentant masters, it looks at two issues from the “American Gothic” story arc that adapt many of the formal and aesthetic qualities of early horror comics: “Southern Change” (#41) and “Strange Fruit” (#42). Finally, the chapter considers the serial comic Bayou by Jeremy Love and how it advances the themes of Moore’s postmodern slave narrative.

A Metadata Reconstruction Algorithm Based on Heterogeneous Sensor Data for Marine Observations

Vast amounts of heterogeneous data on marine observations have been accumulated due to the rapid development of ocean observation technology. Several state-of-art methods are proposed to manage the emerging Internet of Things (IoT) sensor data. However, the use of an inefficient data management strategy during the data storage process can lead to missing metadata; thus, part of the sensor data cannot be indexed and utilized (
i.e.
, ‘data swamp’). Researchers have focused on optimizing storage procedures to prevent such disasters, but few have attempted to restore the missing metadata. In this study, we propose an AI-based algorithm to reconstruct the metadata of heterogeneous marine data in data swamps to solve the above problems. First, a MapReduce algorithm is proposed to preprocess raw marine data and extract its feature tensors in parallel. Second, load the feature tensors are loaded into a machine learning algorithm and clustering operation is implemented. The similarities between the incoming data and the trained clustering results in terms of clustering results are also calculated. Finally, metadata reconstruction is performed based on existing marine observation data processing results. The experiments are designed using existing datasets obtained from ocean observing systems, thus verifying the effectiveness of the algorithms. The results demonstrate the excellent performance of our proposed algorithm for the metadata reconstruction of heterogenous marine observation data.

This article introduces the Lake Environmental Data Harvester (LED) System, a robotic platform designed for the development of an innovative solution for monitoring remote alpine lakes. LED is intended as the first step in creating portable robotic tools that are lightweight, cost-effective, and highly reliable for monitoring remote water bodies. The LED system is based on the Shallow-Water Autonomous Multipurpose Platform (SWAMP), a groundbreaking Autonomous Surface Vehicle (ASV) originally designed for monitoring wetlands. The objective of LED is to achieve the comprehensive monitoring of remote lakes by outfitting the SWAMP with a suite of sensors, integrating an IoT infrastructure, and adhering to FAIR principles for structured data management. SWAMP’s modular design and open architecture facilitate the easy integration of payloads, while its compact size and construction with a reduced weight ensure portability. Equipped with four azimuth thrusters and a flexible hull structure, SWAMP offers a high degree of maneuverability and position-keeping ability for precise surveys in the shallow waters that are typical of remote lakes. In this project, SWAMP was equipped with a suite of sensors, including a single-beam dual-frequency echosounder, water-quality sensors, a winch for sensor deployment, and AirQino, a low-cost air quality analysis system, along with an RTK-GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) receiver for precise positioning. Utilizing commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components, a Multipurpose Data-Acquisition System forms the basis for an Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructure, enabling data acquisition, storage, and long-range communication. This data-centric system design ensures that acquired variables from both sensors and the robotic platform are structured and managed according to the FAIR principles.
