Development of REE mineralization in the giant Maoniuping deposit (Sichuan, China): insights from mineralogy, fluid inclusions, and trace-element geochemistry
2019
Rare-earth deposits associated with intrusive carbonatite complexes are the world’s most important source of these elements (REE). One of the largest deposits of this type is Maoniuping in the Mianning-Dechang metallogenic belt of eastern Tibet (Sichuan, China). In the currently mined central part of the deposit (Dagudao section), REE mineralization is hosted by a structurally and mineralogically complex Late Oligocene (26.4 ± 1.2 Ma, 40Ar/39Ar age of fluorphlogopite associated with bastnäsite) hydrothermal vein system developed in a coeval syenite intrusion. Low-grade stockworks of multiple veinlets and breccias in the lower part of the orebody grade upwards into progressively thicker veins (up to 12 m in width) that are typically zoned and comprise ferromagnesian micas (biotite to fluorphlogopite), sodium clinopyroxenes (aegirine to aegirine-augite), sodium amphiboles (magnesio-arfvedsonite to fluororichterite), K-feldspar, fluorite, barite, calcite, and bastnäsite. The latter four minerals are most common in the uppermost 80 m of the Dagudao section and represent the climax of hydrothermal activity. Systematic variations in the fluid inclusion data indicate a continuous hydrothermal evolution from about 230–400 °C (fluid inclusions in feldspar, clinopyroxene, and amphibole) to 140–240 °C (fluid inclusions in bastnäsite, fluorite, calcite). Hydrothermal REE transport was probably controlled by F−, (SO4)2−, Cl−, and (CO3)2− as complexing ligands. We propose that at Dagudao, silicate magmas produced orthomagmatic fluids that explored and expanded a fissure system generated by strike-slip faulting. Initially, the fluids had appreciable capacity to transport REE and, consequently, no major mineralization developed. The earliest minerals to precipitate were alkali- and Fe-rich silicates containing low levels of F, which caused progressive enrichment of the fluid in Ca, Mg, F, Cl, REE, (SO4)2−, and (CO3)2−, leading to the crystallization of aegirine-augite, fluororichterite, fluorphlogopite, fluorite, barite, calcite, and bastnäsite gradually. Barite, fluorite, calcite, and bastnäsite are the most common minerals in typical ores, and bastnäsite generally postdates these gangue minerals. Thus, it is very probable that fluid cooling and formation of large amount of fluorite, barite, and calcite triggered bastnäsite precipitation in the waning stage of hydrothermal activity.

Textural and compositional variations of apatite from rift-related gabbros, syenogabbros, syenites, quartz-syenites, and nepheline syenites of the Mid-Proterozoic Gardar Province (South Greenland) are presented and compared to apatite compositions from other rock suites. The observed zoning textures of apatite are interpreted to represent (1) primary growth zonation (concentric and oscillatory) that formed during magmatic differentiation and (2) secondary irregular overgrowths, patchy zonation, and resorption textures, assigned to metasomatic overprinting due to interaction with fluids/melts and intra-crystalline diffusion. Compositional variation in the apatites is mainly due to coupled substitutions of Ca and P by variable amounts of Si, Na, and REE, which show increasing concentrations during magmatic differentiation. Furthermore, F concentrations in apatites increase from gabbroic through syenogabbroic to syenitic rocks, whereas Cl concentrations show the opposite trend.Compared to apatite compositions from gabbroic, dioritic, and granitic rocks in general, apatites from alkaline rock suites are characterized by exceptionally high contents of REE and Si and in some alkaline rocks they attain Sr contents comparable to those reported from carbonatites. Typical low Mn and S contents are probably a result of low oxygen fugacity during crystallization at relatively high temperatures.

Isotopic decoupling of K from Sr and Nd in the Saima alkaline complex, NE China: interactions of cratonic roots and asthenosphere
2023
We report high-precision K isotopes, apatite U–Pb ages, whole-rock elements and Sr–Nd isotopes for the Saima nephelite syenite in the North China Craton. Trace-element and Sr–Nd–Hf–O isotope data indicate the presence of subducting sediments in the source region, while K isotopic compositions show a narrow range between –0.54 ‰ and –0.28 ‰, with an average of –0.41 ± 0.06 ‰, identical to the value of the asthenosphere. The nearly identical K isotopic compositions are low probability events compared with the K isotopic compositions of island arc lavas reported previously (–1.55 ‰ to +0.2 ‰). Although crustal contamination is consistent with the Sr–Nd–K isotopic data, alternatively we propose that the isotopic data also reconcile with the interaction between cratonic roots and the underlying convective asthenosphere, if this interaction is over prolonged periods of time. Numerical simulations successfully reproduced the observed data, if the metasomatism of the lithospheric mantle root, the source of the Saima alkaline rocks, occurred 500 Ma ago. Our study reveals that the isotopic compositions of fast-diffusion components in a lithospheric mantle metasomatized by ancient subducting melts can be effectively homogenized by convective asthenosphere through diffusion over a long time interval.

The Soarinho Alkaline Intrusion, southeastern Brazil, makes up part of the Serra do Mar Igneous Province, and it is composed of alkali feldspar syenite, alkali feldspar trachyte, quartz syenite, and monzonite. Geochemical and geochronological analyses of the Soarinho were compared with data from its neighbors, Rio Bonito and Tanguá. Zircon U-Pb Laser Ablation ages show that Soarinho is younger than Rio Bonito and Tanguá. Ages obtained from the monzonite (60 ± 2 Ma), alkali feldspar syenite (58 ± 2 Ma), and quartz syenite (58 ± 2 Ma) are indistinguishable within error. One nepheline syenite sample from Tanguá gives an age equal to those of Rio Bonito already published (65 ± 1 Ma). Petrographic and geochemical data show a clear contrast among Soarinho, Rio Bonito, and Tanguá. Lu-Hf isotopic data for the three alkaline intrusions (all negative) point to some similarities in their sources. The data suggest an enriched mantle source for Soarinho; however, an older continental crust contribution cannot be discarded.

Due to the rapid advancement of technology, lithium carbonate has become a crucial raw material for battery storage applications. Brines remain the primary source, while lithium carbonate production from ores is limited. Therefore, expanding resources, identifying potential deposits, and characterizing existing sources are essential. Direct lithium detection via MLA is challenging due to its atomic number being below 6; however, it can be indirectly identified through lithium-bearing biotite. This study characterizes lithium-bearing biotite in nepheline syenite ore, considering biotite as the primary lithium source. Analytical methods included MLA, modal mineralogy, XRD, ICP-OES, XRF, SEM-BSE, and EDS. The ore contained 4% biotite, with a liberation degree exceeding 70% in particles finer than 500 µm. Biotite formed binary, ternary, and complex associations with K-feldspar, nepheline, and albite. Finer particle sizes increased biotite liberation while reducing associations; no binary biotite–nepheline associations were detected below 75 µm. EDS spectra confirmed biotite as the sole lithium-bearing mineral.

A cumulate syenite in the upper part of the Hongge-layered mafic–ultramafic intrusion, Emeishan large igneous province, SW China
2021
Many silicic plutonic rocks of the Late Permian Emeishan large igneous province (ELIP) are spatially and temporally related to oxide ore-bearing layered mafic–ultramafic intrusions. Their association suggests that there may be a petrogenetic link between the two rock types where the layered intrusion represents the cumulate portion of the magma system and the silicic rocks are the residual liquid portion. An alkali feldspar syenite collected in close spatial association with the Hongge-layered mafic–ultramafic intrusion yielded a weighted-mean zircon U–Pb age of 261.5 ± 2.4 Ma with a corresponding weighted-mean εHf(t) value of + 6.5 ± 0.5. The Hongge syenite is alkalic, metaluminous, and ferroan and somewhat similar to other A-type granitoids of the ELIP but, it is composed of ~ 90 vol% alkali feldspar. The rocks have initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios of 0.70570 and 0.70515 and εNd(t) values of − 0.3 and + 1.4. Rhyolite-MELTS and isotopic modeling indicate that the Hongge syenite is likely produced by crystal accumulation of a residual silicic liquid derived from a mafic parental magma that experienced localized crustal contamination during emplacement. Moreover, the age, location, and composition of the Hongge syenite suggests that it is the uppermost portion of the Hongge-layered intrusion and is representative of the residual silicic liquid of the mafic magmas that form the plagioclase-rich cumulate gabbros of the upper zone.

Clay minerals related to the late magmatic activity of the Piton des Neiges (Réunion Island); consequence for the primitive crusts
2018
This paper describes a detailed petrographic and isotopic study of hypabyssal sheets of quartz-syenite that represent the ultimate differentiation product of the oceanite alkaline magmatic reservoir of the Piton des Neiges stratovolcano (Reunion Island). Clay minerals of the corrensite to chlorite series crystallized during the late-magmatic activity, with quartz, carbonates and accessory minerals from juvenile fluids filling the primary porosity of the quartz-syenite. It is proposed that a double chemical transfer occurred at the end of the crystallization process: degassing of the exsolved CO2-rich and SiO2-rich fluid from the magmatic chamber through the porous quartz-syenite and diffusion of Al, Fe and Mg from the intruded basalts affected by the juvenile fluids towards the primary porosity of the quartz-syenite, feeding the crystallization of late-magmatic clays in the residual primary pores after quartz and carbonate deposition. This process may be generalized to alkaline plutonism, as well as to the primitive crusts of terrestrial planets, and may be the first source of clays in early planets.

This study focused on identifying Th-, Nb-Ta-, Zr-, and REE-bearing minerals with a multivariate statistical approach in alkaline syenite to evaluate their radiological risks, at Nikeiba, Egypt. Through microchemical analyses, by utilizing electron probe microanalysis, horite, microlite, monazite, zircon, columbite, and fergusonite were shown to bear uranium and thorium. These minerals have played an important role in higher radioactive zones in the studied alkaline syenite. REE-minerals comprising bastnäsite, monazite, and fluorite and apatite are well recorded. The total rare earth elements (TREE2O3) reveal higher concentrations in bastnäsite than monazite, with averages 74.87 and 63.8 wt%. Ce is considered the most predominant LREE in the analyzed bastnäsite and monazite. The mean values of radionuclide activity concentrations of 238U, 232Th, and 40K are 108 ± 20 Bq/kg, 107 ± 9 Bq/kg, and 1255 ± 166 Bq/kg, respectively. Radiological assessments revealed a radium equivalent activity of 357 Bq/kg, below global limits, but an air-absorbed dose rate (166 nGy/h) and annual effective doses (0.81 mSv/y indoors, 0.20 mSv/y outdoors) exceeding safe thresholds. Additionally, the excess lifetime cancer risk (ELCR) was calculated at 0.00071, surpassing the acceptable limit of 0.00029, making these rocks unsafe for construction use. Statistical analyses further underscored the relationships between radionuclide concentrations and associated risks, highlighting the necessity for continuous monitoring and mitigation.

Reaction-driven magmatic crystallisation at the Maoniuping carbonatite
2025
Igneous rocks form by solidification of magmas through cooling or volatile degassing following decompression. Expelled H
2
O is thought to trigger alteration around intrusions, leading to formation of metasomatic halos. This mechanism is often invoked to explain many magmatic–hydrothermal rock associations, some of them economically mineralised. Maoniuping in China is one of the four largest operating rare earth element (REE) mines globally, whose origin has been attributed to such hydrothermal exsolution. However, no direct evidence links hydrothermal fluids to the formation of Maoniuping and its associated REE mineralisation. Here we show that the REE deposit at Maoniuping formed magmatically from a carbonatitic brine-melt. Textural and chemical evidence reveals extensive interaction with its quartz syenite host, producing albitised fenites. Coupled metasomatism with these fenites led to silica contamination of the carbonatite melt, triggering crystallisation of refractory alkali–ferromagnesian silicates—an antiskarn. This solidified the melt due to removal of the fluxing elements Na and K. Thus, carbonatite melts can crystallise by element assimilation from their environments, precipitating alkali liquid fluxes into solid minerals. Temperature decrease and volatile degassing merely play a secondary role in this igneous rock-forming process. Solidification driven by coupled antiskarnisation and fenitisation affects both the mineral assemblage and ore fabric, and likely operated in most carbonatite-hosted REE deposits elsewhere.
Rare earth mineralisation at Maoniuping formed when its carrying carbonatite brine-melt reacted with surrounding siliceous rocks, forming an antiskarn. The melt lost its fluxing alkali elements, which led to deposition of coarse grained bastnäsite.

Andradite-rich garnet is a common U-bearing mineral in a variety of alkalic igneous rocks and skarn deposits, but has been largely neglected as a U–Pb chronometer. In situ laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry U–Pb dates of andradite-rich garnet from a syenite pluton and two iron skarn deposits in the North China craton demonstrate the suitability and reliability of the mineral in accurately dating magmatic and hydrothermal processes. Two hydrothermal garnets from the iron skarn deposits have homogenous cores and zoned rims (Ad

) with 22–118 ppm U, whereas one magmatic garnet from the syenite is texturally and compositionally homogenous (Ad

) and has 0.1–20 ppm U. All three garnets have flat time-resolved signals obtained from depth profile analyses for U, indicating structurally bound U. Uranium is correlated with REE in both magmatic and hydrothermal garnets, indicating that the incorporation of U into the garnet is largely controlled by substitution mechanisms. Two hydrothermal garnets yielded U–Pb dates of 129 ± 2 (2
σ
; MSWD = 0.7) and 130 ± 1 Ma (2
σ
; MSWD = 0.5), indistinguishable from zircon U–Pb dates of 131 ± 1 and 129 ± 1 Ma for their respective ore-related intrusions. The magmatic garnet has a U–Pb age of 389 ± 3 Ma (2
σ
; MSWD = 0.6), consistent with a U–Pb zircon date of 388 ± 2 Ma for the syenite. The consistency between the garnet and zircon U–Pb dates confirms the reliability and accuracy of garnet U–Pb dating. Given the occurrence of andradite-rich garnet in alkaline and ultramafic magmatic rocks and hydrothermal ore deposits, our results highlight the potential utilization of garnet as a powerful U–Pb geochronometer for dating magmatism and skarn-related mineralization.
