The Chimes
2015
The world around Simon sings, each movement a pulse of rhythm, each object weaving its own melody, music ringing in every drop of air. Welcome to the world of The Chimes. Here, life is orchestrated by a vast musical instrument that renders people unable to form new memories. The past is a mystery, each new day feels the same as the last, and before is blasphemy. But slowly, inexplicably, Simon is beginning to remember. He emerges from sleep each morning with a pricking feeling, and sense there is something he urgently has to do. In the city Simon meets Lucien, who has a gift for hearing, some secrets of his own, and a theory about the danger lurking in Simon's past. A stunning debut composed of memory, music, love and freedom, The Chimes pulls you into a world that will captivate, enthrall and inspire.
Ocean memory in abalone stories of the Anthropocene
2025
In this “Practice Bridge” essay, I turn to literary fiction as a source for thinking about interconnected forms of ocean memory that are under chemical threat in the Anthropocene. Focusing on Mandy-Suzanne Wong’s short story duology Awabi (2018), or “abalone,” I examine two forms of ocean memory that concern the lifeways of abalone and the Japanese Ama divers who have traditionally harvested them. In both stories, a future of increased ocean acidification interrupts the abalone’s chemosensory memory and the Ama diver’s cultural memory. Cultural memory depends on the ongoing survival of abalone, a precondition for passing diving traditions to their daughters. Acidified seas threaten the formation of abalone shells and cause the erosion of social relationships that depend on ocean health. Through narrative techniques of synaesthesia (the crossing of two senses) and allegory, Wong shows how the living memory of both abalone and Ama divers is interconnected, and how crises of oceanic health affect the survival of cultural practices. Awabi succeeds in dramatizing ocean acidification through techniques of sensation, techniques that could complement the empirical case for addressing ocean acidification as a form of forgetting in the Anthropocene.

Removal and Omission of Fiction Synesthetic Metaphors in English-Ukrainian Translation
2022
This paper investigates omission and removal of synesthetic metaphoric descriptions in English-Ukrainian translations of Celeste Ng’s novel “Everything I Never Told You”. A synesthetic metaphor is viewed as a product of mapping between two different domains of human experience, which are both of sensory nature. The mappings instantiate in synesthetic metaphoric descriptions. The study resorts to the methodological tools of cognitive metaphor translation theory and the affordances of corpus linguistics and quantitative analysis to reveal the correlation between the choice of removal/omission of the source-text synesthetic metaphoric descriptions and the linguacultural specificity/universality of their metaphorical mappings. The results suggest that omission/removal is explained by the linguacultural features of the source-target text cross-sensory mappings and the translators’ free choices. Omission can be accounted for by a translator’s choice to avoid redundancy. Removal occurs if the target-text equivalent synesthetic metaphoric description a) is based on a cross-sensory mapping not embedded in the target linguaculture, b) rests on a different semantic specification of a structurally identical cross-sensory mapping, or c) has a lower degree of conventionality than its non-metaphoric periphrasis.

Poetika a estetika modernizmu v dvoch komorných hrách Vladimíra Hurbana Vladimírova z prvého desaťročia 20 storočia Keď sa schladí, 1905; Boj, 1907
2021
Štúdia ponúka interpretačné čítanie dvoch jednoaktových dramatických textov Vladimíra Hurbana Vladimírova (1884 – 1950) s témou lásky: Keď sa schladí... (1905) a Boj (1907). Prieniky umeleckých smerov (symbolizmus, impresionizmus, secesia) a technika synestézie dovoľujú sledovať prelínanie mnohotvárnych umeleckých postupov a literárnych techník, použitých na nuansované stvárnenie dominantných osobných a subjektívnych tém.

Nová poetika starnúceho majstra Martin Kukučín Spoločenské pôžitky
2020
