GROTESQUE PORTRAITS IN TORRES VILLARROEL
1968
The purpose of this essay is to determine the contribution made by Torres Villarroel's Sueños morales (1727-28) to the history of aesthetic ideas. Spanish letters in the first half of the eighteenth century are so barren that, Feijoo excepted, Torres is the only author whose writings have some claim to literary validity. His Visiones y visitas, as they were first called-make this claim persuasively because of their elaboration of the satirical technique which was used by Quevedo a century earlier.
