Hydatigera taeniaeformis
is a cestode that uses felines and rodents as definitive and intermediate hosts, respectively. Its larval stage, or metacestode, infects a wide variety of rodent species and develops in the liver parenchyma into a cyst. The aim of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of
H. taeniaeformis
metacestode in various species of wild rodents from Peru. For this, the livers of 356 rodents were macroscopically examined for any parasitic form compatible with metacestodes. Metacestodes were identified by measuring characteristic morphological parameters, and the diagnosis was confirmed by molecular analysis of a fragment of the cytochrome
c
oxidase subunit 1 gene (
cox1
). Five rodents: two small-eared pygmy rice rats (
Oligoryzomys microtis
), two white-naped squirrels (
Simosciurus nebouxii
), and one pygmy rice rat (
Oligoryzomys
sp.) were infected with
H. taeniaeformis
metacestodes. The
cox1
sequences from our metacestodes showed up to 100% identity with previous
H. taeniaeformis
sequences from the GenBank. These results demonstrated the occurrence of
H. taeniaeformis
in new intermediate hosts, as well as the first molecular contribution for
H. taeniaeformis
from Peru.

INFECTION WITH THE STROBILOCERCUS OF TAENIA TAENIAEFORMIS IN A MALAGASY GIANT JUMPING RAT (HYPOGEOMYS ANTIMENA)

An adult male Malagasy giant jumping rat (Hypogeomys antimena) kept at Zoo Duisburg was presented for clinical examination because of a distended abdomen and a history of lethargy and weakness. General examination findings consisted of an enlarged soft and fluctuating abdomen, suggestive of ascites. Digital radiography revealed multiple cloud-like radiopaque lesions in the cranial abdominal area, as well as an overall decrease in visibility of detail of the abdominal organs. Ultrasound examination showed circumscribed hypo- to anechogenic areas in the liver, measuring from 1 to 3 cm in diameter, some containing irregular, convoluted structures. Exploratory laparotomy confirmed the presence of a large amount of clear, pale-yellow fluid in the peritoneal cavity, as well as multiple cystic lesions in the liver and in the greater omentum. Extirpated cysts placed in sterile saline solution or fixed in formalin were sent to the Institut für Parasitologie der Tierärztlichen Hochschule, Hannover, Germany, and were identified as larval stages of the cestode Taenia taeniaeformis. Unfortunately, the rat died a few hours after surgery. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of infection with strobilocerci of T. taeniaeformis in a Malagasy giant jumping rat.

Diversity of Taenia and Hydatigera (Cestoda: Taeniidae) in domestic dogs in Kenya

Taenia species of domestic dogs can cause cysticercosis and coenurosis in a wide range of intermediate hosts including humans. Most taeniids of dogs are globally distributed, but some wildlife-transmitted species can be specific for certain regions. Generally, little information exists on the species composition and frequency in most regions of the world, which impairs risk assessment and control strategies. This study determined the range of taeniid species in dogs in four widely spaced areas of Kenya by genetic identification of eggs in faeces collected from the environment. Individual taeniid eggs were characterised by nested polymerase chain reaction of NADH dehydrogenase subunit 1 and cytochrome C oxidase 1 genes, restriction fragment length polymorphism and partial sequencing. Overall 79/1621 (4.9%) faecal samples contained eggs of Taenia or Hydatigera (8.0% in Turkana, 4.8% in Isiolo, 3.8% in Maasai Mara and 1.3% in Meru). Taenia hydatigena and T. multiceps were the most frequent, found in 36 and 15 samples, respectively. Other eggs found in the faeces belonged to T. serialis (sensu lato), T. madoquae (the first record in domestic dogs), T. ovis, T. saginata and Hydatigera taeniaeformis. Polymorphism of nad1 sequences revealed 22 and 8 haplotypes of T. hydatigena and T. multiceps, respectively. The results show the involvement of dogs in both domestic and sylvatic transmission cycles. In addition to the species range, this study provides data on the intraspecific diversity of T. hydatigena and T. multiceps in Kenya, which will serve as baseline information for further studies into cysticercosis and coenurosis in livestock and humans in the region.

First report of Echinococcus multilocularis in cats in Poland: a monitoring study in cats and dogs from a rural area and animal shelter in a highly endemic region

Background
Alveolar echinococcosis is a dangerous zoonotic disease caused by larval forms of
Echinococcus multilocularis
. In its life-cycle, the principal definitive host is the red fox; however, domesticated carnivorous animals (dogs and cats) can also act as definitive hosts. Until now, there were no data concerning this infection in cats in Poland. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of
E. multilocularis
in cats and dogs originating from rural areas and animal shelters in a region characterised by a high prevalence of
E. multilocularis
in red foxes.
Methods
Samples of faeces were collected from 67 cats and 268 dogs from a rural area (villages and animal shelters) of a highly endemic region in southeastern Poland. Samples were examined using nested PCR (
E. multilocularis
), multiplex PCR (
E. multilocularis
,
Taenia
spp.) and PCR [
E. granulosus
(
s.l.
)]. Additionally, faeces were examined microscopically (flotation). Moreover, intestines from 110 red foxes shot in the investigated area were examined (sedimentation and counting technique).
Results
Positive PCR results for
E. multilocularis
were obtained in 4 cats (6.0%) and 4 dogs (1.5%). There were no significant differences between groups of animals (from a shelter and with an owner) concerning the prevalence of
E. multilocularis
in both cats and dogs.
Taenia
spp. were found in 10 cats (14.9%) (
Taenia taeniaeformis
and
T. hydatigena
) and 26 dogs (9.7%) (
T. hydatigena
,
T. serialis
,
T. taeniaeformis
,
T. crassiceps
,
T. pisiformis
and
T. ovis
) and
Mesocestoides litteratus
was found in 4 cats (6.0%) and 3 dogs (1.1%). All samples were negative for
E. granulosus
by PCR. Taking into consideration PCR and flotation results, 29 cats (43.3%) and 73 dogs (27.2%) were infected with helminths (26.9 and 11.9%, respectively, were infected with tapeworms). The highly endemic status of the investigated area was confirmed by examination of red foxes: 48.2% of examined red foxes were infected with
E. multilocularis
.
Conclusions
To the best of our knowledge, this study reports the presence of
E. multilocularis
in cats for the first time in Poland and confirms the role of dogs in this infection in highly endemic areas.

Cryptic species Hydatigera kamiyai and other taeniid metacestodes in the populations of small mammals in Serbia

Hydatigera
(Cestoda: Taeniidae) is a recently resurrected genus with the description of a new species,
Hydatigera kamiyai
, a cryptic entity within the
Hydatigera taeniaeformis
species complex. Rodents are intermediate hosts and correct taxonomic identification of
H. taeniaeformis
sensu lato (s.l.) species is difficult without the use of molecular methods. The aim of this study was to identify and explore the genetic diversity of
Hydatigera
and other taeniid species.
Methods
Ten different small mammals species (856 individuals) (
Rattus rattus
, three
Apodemus
, three Arvicolinae and three Soricidae species) were examined from 2013 to 2023. Captured animals were visually examined for cysts and visible lesions. Two markers were used for amplification and sequencing:
cox1
and 12
S
rDNA.
Results
Molecular analysis of cysts and visible lesions revealed four taeniid species:
Hydatigera kamiyai
,
H. taeniaeformis
sensu stricto (s.s.),
Taenia martis
and
T. crassiceps
.
Hydatigera kamiyai
was found in
Apodemus flavicollis
,
A. agrarius
,
Microtus arvalis
and
Crocidrua leucodon
, while
H. taeniaeformis
s.s. is registered in
R. rattus
.
Hydatigera kamiyai cox1
sequences clustered with European populations and showed at least 25 nucleotid differences compared to Asian, African, Australian and one of our isolates of
H. taeniaeformis
s.s acquired from a rat, followed by large sequence distances (9.4% to 12.9%), indicating clear molecular distinction of two species.
Conclusions
This is one of the few mitochondrial gene-based studies performed after the description of cryptic entities within the
Hydatigera taeniaeformis
s.l. complex and represents a valuable contribution to understanding of genetic diversity, host suitability and geographic distribution of these tapeworm species. Also, our study provides an important basis of molecular data from this part of Europe for further studies. We emphasize the importance of additional studies of intermediate hosts, especially rats from Europe and
Apodemus
spp. and voles from Asia and Africa.

Background
The common cat tapeworm,
Hydatigera taeniaeformis
, is widely distributed across many regions of the world but its global genetic diversity, ecology, and other biological features are not fully understood. The predator-prey relationship of felids and rodents sustains the transmission in both sylvatic and synanthropic or urban settings. This study was carried out in three urban market centres in Tamale, Ghana to determine the prevalence of
H. taeniaeformis
infection in urban rats and characterise the local population genetics using the mitochondrial
nad1
gene sequences.
Methods
From January to May 2023, rats were captured and euthanized to identity and isolate the
H. taeniaeformis
metacestodes. The full mitochondrial nad1 gene was amplified, sequenced and used to characterise the cestode population.
Results
In total 64/80 rats from the three market centres were found naturally infected with metacestodes of
H. taeniaeformis
. Averagely, infected rats harboured two cysts with one exceptional case of 25 cysts in one liver. Each cyst harboured one metacestode. The DNA sequences revealed four haplotypes in a star-like distribution network across the three market centres. All four haplotypes were found to be unique, clustered with
H. taeniaeformis
sensu stricto (s.s.) global isolates and had only marginal variation among themselves.
Conclusion
This is the first account of the genetic variability within
H. taeniaeformis
in Ghana and would contribute to ongoing and future studies on African regional biogeographic distribution of the common cat tapeworm.

Endoparasites of European Wildcats (Felis silvestris) in Greece

The European wildcat (Felis silvestris) is the only wild felid living in Greece. Wildcat populations are declining due to anthropogenic and phenological unfavourable conditions, and parasites may have an additional negative impact. In the present study, the occurrence of endoparasites in wildcats in Greece and the potential threats posed to wildcats, domestic animals, and humans in the study areas has been investigated. In a six-year period, 23 road-killed wildcats and 62 wildcat faecal samples were collected from different areas of the country. Necropsy for the detection of endoparasites and standard parasitological examinations of faecal samples were performed. Parasites were morphologically identified and, in selected cases, molecularly analysed. All necropsied wildcats (100%) were infected by three to 10 different parasite taxa, with the most prevalent being Taenia taeniaeformis (73.9%), Toxocara cati (60.9%), Angiostrongylus chabaudi (56.5%), Ancylostoma tubaeforme (39.1%), Cylicospirura spp. (34.8%), Troglostrongylus brevior (34.8%), and Capillaria aerophila (33.8%). Of the 62 faecal samples examined, 53 (85.5%) were positive for one or more parasite elements (larvae, eggs, or oocysts). The most frequent were T. cati (45.2%), A. chabaudi (29%), C. aerophila (24.2%), and Ancylostomatidae (17.7%). This is the first survey on endoparasites affecting wildcats in Greece. Some of the parasites here found are frequent in domestic and wild felids, while others, i.e., Oslerus rostratus and Cylicospirura petrowi, were described for the first time in the European wildcat. Most of them have a significant pathogenic potential, causing severe to hazardous diseases to infected felids and some, under specific circumstances, can also threaten human health.

Heat treatment and false-positive heartworm antigen testing in ex vivo parasites and dogs naturally infected by Dirofilaria repens and Angiostrongylus vasorum

Background
Heartworm antigen testing is considered sensitive and specific. Currently available tests are reported as detecting a glycoprotein found predominantly in the reproductive tract of the female worm and can reach specificity close to 100%. Main concerns regard sensitivity in the case of light infections, the presence of immature females or cases of all-male infections. Research and development have been aimed at increasing sensitivity. Recently, heat treatment of serum prior to antigen testing has been shown to result in an increase in positive antigen test results, presumably due to disruption of natural antigen–antibody complexes. Cross-reactions in dogs with both natural and experimental infections with
Angiostrongylus vasorum
and
Spirocerca lupi
have been reported, but cross-reactions with other helminths have not been extensively studied. In order to evaluate potential cross-reactivity with other canine and feline parasites, two studies were performed. Study 1: Live adults of
Dirofilaria immitis
,
Dirofilaria repens
,
Toxocara canis
,
Toxocara cati
,
Dipylidium caninum
,
Taenia taeniaeformis
and
Mesocestoides
spp. larvae were washed and incubated in tubes with saline solution. All worms were alive at the time of removal from the saline. Saline solutions containing excretory/secretory antigens were then tested for heartworm with six different, commercially available antigen tests. All results were evaluated blind by three of the authors. Study 2: Sera from dogs with natural infections by
A. vasorum
or
D. repens
, living in areas free of heartworm disease, were tested with the same tests before and after heat treatment (103 °C for 10 min).
Results
Results suggest that antigens detected by currently available tests are not specific for
D. immitis.
They may give positive results through detection of different parasites’ antigens that are normally not released into the bloodstream or released in a low amount and/or bound to antibodies. Tests may even detect antigens released by male
D. immitis
adult worms.
D. repens
appears to release more detectable antigens than the other worms studied.
Conclusions
Cross-reaction with
A. vasorum
and
D. repens
does occur in the field and could potentially occur with other helminths. Heat treatment decreases specificity by enhancing cross-reactivity.

Rodents of Senegal and their role as intermediate hosts of Hydatigera spp. (Cestoda: Taeniidae)

Hydatigera (Cestoda: Taeniidae) is a recently resurrected genus including species seldom investigated in sub-Saharan Africa. We surveyed wild small mammal populations in the areas of Richard Toll and Lake Guiers, Senegal, with the objective to evaluate their potential role as intermediate hosts of larval taeniid stages (i.e. metacestodes). Based on genetic sequences of a segment of the mitochondrial DNA gene cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COI), we identified Hydatigera parva metacestodes in 19 out of 172 (11.0%) Hubert's multimammate mice (Mastomys huberti) and one out of six (16.7%) gerbils (Taterillus sp.) and Hydatigera taeniaeformis sensu stricto metacestodes in one out of 215 (0.5%) Nile rats (Arvicanthis niloticus). This study reports epidemiological and molecular information on H. parva and H. taeniaeformis in West African rodents, further supporting the phylogeographic hypothesis on the African origin of H. parva. Our findings may indicate significant trophic interactions contributing to the local transmission of Hydatigera spp. and other parasites with similar life-cycle mechanisms. We therefore propose that further field investigations of rodent population dynamics and rodent-borne infectious organisms are necessary to improve our understanding of host–parasite associations driving the transmission risks of rodent parasites in West Africa.

Helminth Parasites among Rodents in the Middle East Countries: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Rodents can be a source of zoonotic helminths in the Middle East and also in other parts of the world. The current systematic review aimed to provide baseline data on rodent helminths to recognize the threats of helminth parasites on public health in the Middle East region. Following a systematic search on PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, a total of 65 research studies on rodent cestodes, nematodes, and trematodes, which were conducted in the countries of the Middle East, were analyzed. The study identified 44 rodent species from which Mus musculus, Rattus norvegicus, and Rattus rattus were most common (63%) and recognized as the primary rodent hosts for helminth infestation in this region. Cestodes were the most frequently reported (n = 50), followed by nematodes (49), and trematodes (14). The random effect meta-analysis showed that the pooled prevalence of cestode (57.66%, 95%CI: 34.63–80.70, l2% = 85.6, p < 0.001) was higher in Saudi Arabia, followed by nematode (56.24%, 95%CI: 11.40–101.1, l2% = 96.7, p < 0.001) in Turkey, and trematode (15.83%, 95%CI: 6.25–25.1, l2% = 98.5, p < 0.001) in Egypt. According to the overall prevalence estimates of individual studies, nematodes were higher (32.71%, 95%CI: 24.89–40.54, l2% = 98.6, p < 0.001) followed by cestodes (24.88%, 95%CI: 19.99–29.77, l2% = 94.9, p < 0.001) and trematodes (10.17%, 95%CI: 6.7–13.65, l2% = 98.3, p < 0.001) in the rodents of the Middle East countries. The review detected 22 species of helminths, which have zoonotic importance. The most frequent helminths were Capillaria hepatica, Hymenolepis diminuta, Hymenolepis nana, and Cysticercus fasciolaris. There was no report of rodent-helminths from Bahrain, Jordan, Lebanon, Oman, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. Furthermore, there is an information gap on rodent helminths at the humans-animal interface level in Middle East countries. Through the One Health approach and countrywide detailed studies on rodent-related helminths along with their impact on public health, the rodent control program should be conducted in this region.
