Effectiveness of Message Frame-Tailoring in a Web-Based Smoking Cessation Program: Randomized Controlled Trial

The content of online computer-tailored interventions is often determined to match an individual's characteristics, beliefs, and behavioral factors. These content-tailored interventions lead to better message processing and a higher likelihood of behavior change such as smoking cessation. However, a meta-analysis of online computer-tailored interventions showed that effect sizes, albeit positive, remain small, suggesting room for improvement. A promising strategy to enhance the effectiveness of online computer-tailored interventions is to tailor the message frame (ie, how a message is communicated) based on the preferred communication style of the user in addition to content-tailoring. One factor that determines an individual's communication style preference is the need for autonomy; some individuals prefer an autonomy-supportive communication style (offering choice and use of suggestive language), whereas others might prefer a directive communication style, which is replete with imperatives and does not provide choice. Tailoring how messages are presented (eg, based on the need for autonomy) is called message frame-tailoring.
The aim of the present study was to test the effectiveness of message frame-tailoring based on the need for autonomy, in isolation and in combination with content-tailoring, within the context of an online computer-tailored smoking cessation intervention. The primary outcome measure was the 7-day point-prevalence of smoking abstinence. Secondary outcomes were perceived message relevance, self-determined motivation to quit smoking, and sociocognitive beliefs.
A randomized controlled trial with a 2 (message frame-tailoring vs no message frame-tailoring) by 2 (content-tailoring vs no content-tailoring) design was conducted among adult smokers intending to quit smoking (N=273).
Structural equation modeling revealed that the content-tailored condition increased smoking abstinence rates 1 month after the start of the intervention (beta=.57, P=.02). However, neither message frame-tailoring nor its interaction with content-tailoring significantly predicted smoking abstinence. In our model, message frame-tailoring, content-tailoring, as well as their interaction significantly predicted perceived relevance of the smoking cessation messages, which consequently predicted self-determined motivation. In turn, self-determined motivation positively affected attitudes and self-efficacy for smoking cessation, but only self-efficacy consequently predicted smoking abstinence. Participants in the control condition perceived the highest level of message relevance (mean 4.78, SD 1.27). However, messages that were frame-tailored for individuals with a high need for autonomy in combination with content-tailored messages led to significantly higher levels of perceived message relevance (mean 4.83, SD 1.03) compared to those receiving content-tailored messages only (mean 4.24, SD 1.05, P=.003).
Message frame-tailoring based on the need for autonomy seems to be an effective addition to conventional content-tailoring techniques in online smoking cessation interventions for people with a high need for autonomy; however, this is not effective in its current form for people with a low need for autonomy.

Tailored gamification in education: A literature review and future agenda

Gamification has been widely used to design better educational systems aiming to increase students’ concentration, motivation, engagement, flow experience, and others positive experiences. With advances in research on gamification in education, over the past few years, many studies have highlighted the need to tailor the gamification design properties to match individual students’ needs, characteristics and preferences. Thus, different studies have been conducted to personalize the gamification in education. However, the results are still contradictory and need to be better understood to advance this field. To provide a complete understanding of this research domain, we conducted a systematic literature review to summarize the results and discussions on studies that cover the field of tailored gamified education. Following a systematic process, we analysed 2108 studies and identified 19 studies to answer our research questions. The results indicate that most of the studies only consider students’ gamer types to tailor the systems, and most of the experiments do not provide sufficient statistical evidence, especially regarding learning performance using tailored gamified systems. Based on the results, we also provided an agenda with different challenges, opportunities, and research directions to improve the literature on tailored gamification in education. Our study contributes to the field of gamification design in education.

Time‐Tailoring van der Waals Heterostructures for Human Memory System Programming

The human memory system plays an indispensable role in oblivion, learning, and memorization. Implementing a memory system within electronic devices contributes an important step toward constructing a neuromorphic system that emulates advanced mental functions of the human brain. Given the complex time‐tailoring requirement, integrating a human memory system into one system is a great challenge. Here, one van der Waals heterostructure with flexible time‐tailoring ability is demonstrated, which can meet the high requirement of human memory system programming. By stacking volatile and nonvolatile function layers, all basic memory types, including sensory memory, short‐term and long‐term memory are integrated into the device and the transition between these memory types are flexible. Moreover, decision‐making action and in situ result storage are also demonstrated. It is anticipated that the demonstrated time‐tailoring system will support the model of a human memory system. van der Waals heterostructures with time‐tailoring ability are developed for human memory system programming. Retention time can be tailored from milliseconds to kiloseconds. Thus, a human memory system with rich functionalities is implemented in this cell and the system also has a capability of decision‐making and in situ data storage.

Plasma-Stimulated Super-Hydrophilic Surface Finish of Polymers

Super-hydrophilicity is a desired but rarely reported surface finish of polymer materials, so the methods for achieving such a property represent a great scientific and technological challenge. The methods reported by various authors are reviewed and discussed in this paper. The super-hydrophilic surface finish has been reported for polymers functionalized with oxygen-rich surface functional groups and of rich morphology on the sub-micrometer scale. The oxygen concentration as probed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy should be above 30 atomic % and the roughness as determined by atomic force microscopy over a few nm, although most authors reported the roughness was close to 100 nm. A simple one-step oxygen plasma treatment assures for super-hydrophilicity of few polymers only, but the technology enables such a surface finish of almost any fluorine-free polymer providing a capacitively coupled oxygen plasma that enables deposition of minute quantities of inorganic material is applied. More complex methods include deposition of at least one coating, followed by surface activation with oxygen plasma. Fluorinated polymers require treatment with plasma rich in hydrogen to achieve the super-hydrophilic surface finish. The stability upon aging depends largely on the technique used for super-hydrophilization.
