Tarasyuk, Boris
1999
Although the European Union's decision to admit Turkey as a potential new member but not Ukraine was a disappointment, it has not been taken by Kiev as a bar to eventual accession, according to Boris Tarasyuk, the Ukranian foreign minister. Instead, EU leaders at their summit meeting in Helsinki a week ago adopted a \"common strategy on Ukraine\" that omitted the prospect of membership, while calling for increased economic, political and cultural cooperation. Despite disappointment, \"We take the common strategy on the Ukraine as a step forward,\" Mr. Tarasyuk said. \"It did recognize Ukraine's pro-European aspirations, and welcomed our pro-European choice.\" He said the document would shorten the way to membership.
