Huskies women in second on Day 1
by
Zary, Darren
in
Tasche, Lindsay
2006
Brae-Anne McArthur of Guelph was second with 3,466 points, followed by Tricia Palmer of Calgary (3,452) and Saskatchewan's Lindsay Tasche (3,427). Amber Mosewich of the Huskies was one of six qualifiers Thursday for Saturday's 600-metre women's final. Mosewich, the defending CIS gold-medal winner who has been hampered by injury, qualified fifth overall in a time of 1:33.43. Calgary's Holly Ratzlaff was the top qualifier (1:32.85), followed by Manitoba's Kja Isaacson (1:35.07), Calgary's Renee Kaylor (1:33.25) and Windsor's Madeleine Woods (1:35.18). That's because the Field House has a 200-metre oval track. More and more CIS athletes have qualified on oversized 300-metre tracks, which feature a longer straightaway and, usually, faster results.

Huskies hurting going into Open
2005
Still, the Huskies are coming into this event with momentum on their side. Going in to the 36th annual Sled Dog meet, which runs today through Saturday, the Saskatchewan men sit seventh in Canadian Interuniversity Sport rankings. The Huskies women currently sit atop the CIS charts with 67 points. [Lindsay Tasche] also competed at the Golden Bear, winning the long jump with a leap of 5.24m and finishing eighth in the shot put. Tasche will be tackling a pentathlon at the Sled Dog on Saturday. Unfortunately for the Huskies, Corey Armstrong, a former Canada West champion in the pentathlon, won't be competing. Armstrong, St. Pierre's pick as the team's top male athlete, has bowed out to the injury bug. Many others, however, are just looking to save their best for last when it is all on the line in late-February and early- March.

Women set sights on No. 1
2006
\"It's definitely different this year going in ranked No. 2,\" admits pentathlete and long jumper Lindsay Tasche. \"We've always gone in No. 1 with quite a cushion. We feel like the underdog but I don't think anyone feels it's out of reach. We do have to perform very well, that's for sure. We can't have a whole lot go wrong and we're going to need to really step up. We just can't do what we're ranked. We're going to need to bump up in spots.\" Other medal hopefuls include pole vaulters Adrianne Vangool and Leah Vause, Mosewich (600), Andrea Vinet (60-metre hurdles), Tasche (pentathlon), Ashley Hinther (3,000) and the relay teams.
