Sak Yant as a Cross-Cultural Practice
Sak Yants are spiritual tattoos that originate from Southeast Asia. Based on an Instagram sample, this article examines the popularity of Sak Yants in the so-called West, as they clearly differ from other tattoo styles, for example, often emphasize less individuality and imply rules that the tattooee must follow to keep their power. Their cross-cultural adaptation can imply the risk of copies and changes, as well as the commodification of the spiritual art and a connection to eroticism to promote their marketing. Reasons for the cross-cultural fascination these tattoos exert lie in the belief in protection or a general desire for meaningfulness, the constant indexical connection to the master, the expression of cultural openness, and the feeling of community, as well as a holistic approach to the physical and spiritual. This is expressed through the ritual and the new spiritual status tied to certain behaviors. In conclusion, the millennia-old Sak Yant seems to correspond to a specific zeitgeist, connecting body and mind and enabling self-chosen connections to times and places.
A katonai jelzések rendszerezése – 1. rész Jóslatok, előjelek.
A jelzések eredete - jóslatok, előjelek. 2. Jelszavak, titkos kódok, titkos üzenetek. 3. Zászlók, lobogók. 4. Fényjelek. 5. Hangjelek. 6.
OP21 Spinal anesthesia in patients with lumbar tattoos: case report and literature review
Background and AimsLumbar tattoos have become increasingly common, especially among young adults. Although not considered an absolute contraindication for regional anesthesia, concerns persist regarding potential complications, including the introduction of pigment into the neuraxial space.MethodsWe report the case of a 34-year-old pregnant woman at 38 weeks with gestational diabetes, who required an emergency cesarean section. She had a large tattoo covering her entire lumbar region, leaving no unaffected skin for puncture. Spinal anesthesia was performed using a 27G needle under strict aseptic technique. The patient refused a skin incision prior to puncture.ResultsThe procedure was completed without complications. However, literature highlights theoretical risks: organic tattoo pigments may be neurotoxic if introduced into the spinal canal, and ink particles may trigger localized immune responses leading to inflammation or neural damage. The phenomenon of ‘coring’—where a fragment of tattooed skin is carried into the spinal space by the needle—has been described. To minimize this risk, some experts recommend a small skin incision, which was not possible in this case due to patient refusal. The patient was informed of potential complications and advised to report any symptoms. She was also warned about possible risks during future MRI scans. At 6 months follow-up, the patient was contacted by telephone and reported no complications, confirming an uneventful recovery.Abstract OP21 Figure 1Full view of the patient´s lumbar tattoo area[Image Omitted. See PDF.]ConclusionsWhile spinal anesthesia through tattooed skin is not absolutely contraindicated, it should be approached with caution. Informed consent, thorough risk assessment, aseptic technique, and proper documentation are essential when alternative puncture sites are unavailable. However, due to the limited data available, further research and continued clinical vigilance are recommended.
Medical tattooing, the new frontiers: a case of nail bed reconstruction
The primary objective of medical tattooing is to restore part of a patient’s physical integrity. Moreover, the procedure seeks to assist in psychological recovery from the physical and/or psychological consequences of disease, surgery or trauma. The method described in this brief note marks a step forward in the field of such tattooing. The treatment simulates reconstruction of the nail bed, as the nails of the big toes had previously been removed through a surgical avulsion procedure. This treatment, agreed with the physician and performed by a tattooist with proven experience in medical tattooing, also involved the use of specific colour nuances that resulted in an extremely realistic outcome.
