One driver one mic
One Driver, One Mic is a documentary feature that chronicles how a group of immigrant cab drivers in Austin, Texas created a taxi cooperative to protect their livelihoods after Uber and Lyft rolled into town. As we follow the drivers' journey, we see how democracy is not easy, especially for a group of independent contractor drivers who must learn to trust each other and work as a team. After Uber and Lyft force a citywide referendum vote in protest of regulations, we see the drivers join a shoestring campaign to fight the technology giants. We witness how workers must constantly advocate for themselves through political organizing. Ultimately, this film serves as a cautionary tale for workers and labor organizers about the tenuous nature of democracy.
Path optimization of taxi carpooling
The problem that passengers are hard to take taxis while empty driving rate is high widely exists under the traditional taxi operation mode. The implementation of taxi carpooling mode can alleviate the problem in a certain extent. The objective of this study is to optimize the taxi carpooling path. Firstly, the taxi carpooling path optimization model with single objective and its extended model with multiple objectives are built respectively. Then, the single objective path optimization model of taxi carpooling is solved based on the improved single objective genetic algorithm, and the multiple-objective path optimization model of taxi carpooling is solved based on the improved multiple-objective genetic algorithm. Finally, a case study is carried out based on a road network with 24 nodes. The case study results show the path optimization models and algorithms of taxi carpooling proposed in the paper can quickly get the taxi carpooling path, and can increase the income of taxi driver while reduce the cost for passengers.
Punjabi Immigrant Mobility in the United States
How did so many Punjabi immigrants come to find themselves behind the wheels of so many New York City taxi cabs, and what do their stories have to teach us about how immigrants must navigate life in a new society? Diditi Mitra analyzes how race and class influence settlement patterns in the United States, based on her extensive interviews with 59 Punjabi taxi drivers, organizers of the New York Taxi Workers Alliance, laywers who represent drivers in taxi courts, owners of taxi fleets, and an official of the New York Taxi and Limousine Commission. What emerges is an unprecedented exploration into how society shapes the 'choices' made by immigrants as they adapt to America.
The knowledge : a Richard Jury mystery
\"In the latest series outing, The Knowledge, the Scotland Yard detective nearly meets his match in a Baker Street Irregulars-like gang of kids and a homicide case that reaches into east Africa. Robbie Parsons is one of London's finest, a black cab driver who knows every street, every theater, every landmark in the city by heart. In his backseat is a man with a gun in his hand--a man who brazenly committed a crime in front of the Artemis Club, a rarefied art gallery-cum-casino, then jumped in and ordered Parsons to drive. As the criminal eventually escapes to Nairobi, Detective Superintendent Richard Jury comes across the case in the Saturday paper. Two days previously, Jury had met and instantly connected with one of the victims of the crime, a professor of astrophysics at Columbia and an expert gambler. Feeling personally affronted, Jury soon enlists Melrose Plant, Marshall Trueblood, and his whole gang of merry characters to contend with a case that takes unexpected turns into Tanzanian gem mines, a closed casino in Reno, Nevada, and a pub that only London's black cabbies, those who have 'the knowledge,' can find\"-- Provided by publisher.
Punjabi immigrant mobility in the United States : adaptation through race and class
\"The Punjabis, people from the Indian state of the Punjab, had formed a niche in the New York taxi industry for nearly two decades. In those decades, the turbans of the Sikhs, who dominated the industry, and yellow cabs were inseparable. Yet, little is known about their immigration journey. From the moment of their arrival to their gradual adaptation to America is the focus of this book. And, as the Punjabi story unfolds, not only do we learn about them, we also learn about the yellow industry as well as better understand the society to which the Punjabis immigrated\"-- Provided by publisher.
