Representation in Scientific Practice Revisited
2014,2013
Representation in Scientific Practice, published by the MIT Press in 1990, helped coalesce a long-standing interest in scientific visualization among historians, philosophers, and sociologists of science and remains a touchstone for current investigations in science and technology studies. This volume revisits the topic, taking into account both the changing conceptual landscape of STS and the emergence of new imaging technologies in scientific practice. It offers cutting-edge research on a broad array of fields that study information as well as short reflections on the evolution of the field by leading scholars, including some of the contributors to the 1990 volume. The essays consider the ways in which viewing experiences are crafted in the digital era; the embodied nature of work with digital technologies; the constitutive role of materials and technologies -- from chalkboards to brain scans -- in the production of new scientific knowledge; the metaphors and images mobilized by communities of practice; and the status and significance of scientific imagery in professional and popular culture.ContributorsMorana Alac, Michael Barany, Anne Beaulieu, Annamaria Carusi, Catelijne Coopmans, Lorraine Daston, Sarah de Rijcke, Joseph Dumit, Emma Frow, Yann Giraud, Aud Sissel Hoel, Martin Kemp, Bruno Latour, John Law, Michael Lynch, Donald MacKenzie, Cyrus Mody, Natasha Myers, Rachel Prentice, Arie Rip, Martin Ruivenkamp, Lucy Suchman, Janet Vertesi, Steve Woolgar

Poland is dynamically changing its energy mix. As a result of this process, solar energy is increasing its share in energy production. The development of the solar energy market is determined by numerous factors. This paper aims to develop a roadmap for further development of the photovoltaic (PV) energy market in Poland. The scope of the research covers five areas of PV technology and market development in Poland: (i) technology; (ii) power grids; (iii) law; (iv) economic conditions; and (v) social conditions. With the use of a Technology Roadmapping Methodology (TRM), for each of the determined areas, several factors were analyzed, and their development paths were described. In addition, the article focuses on technological challenges (regarding PV cells, modules, components, power conversion and monitoring and management system, optimizers, batteries, and other energy storage systems), grid efficiency, recycling, production costs, subsidies, public awareness and education, and the energy exclusion problem. The main result of the research is the roadmap of the photovoltaic solar energy technology and market development in Poland. Further development of the PV market and technology requires parallel progress in all the identified areas. This study offers implications for policymakers, investors, managers, and technology and infrastructure developers regarding their involvement in photovoltaic market.

Testování psychometrických vlastností a ekvivalence české verze škály spokojenosti se životem (SWLS) pomocí metod konfirmační faktorové analýzy, teorie odpovědi na položku a bayesovského modelování
The Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) is one of the most commonly used instruments for measuring life satisfaction. The aim of this study is to test the psychometric properties of the Czech version of the SWLS using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and Item Response Theory (IRT) and to test its invariance between social groups in terms of gender, age, and education using Bayesian modelling on a representative sample of the Czech online population, as the scale has not yet been tested on representative data in the Czech Republic. The research sample consists of 960 respondents aged 18 to 69 years. The results confirmed that the psychometric properties of the Czech version of the SWLS are very good, but, at the same time, it is evident that the fifth item shows worse results than the other four items. In terms of dimensionality, CFA and IRT confirmed its modified single-factor structure with correlated residuals between the fourth and fifth items as the most appropriate. Testing for approximate measurement invariance using Bayesian modelling showed that the SWLS measures comparably between groups based on gender, age, and education. In conclusion, the Czech version of the SWLS is a suitable, verified, and reliable instrument for measuring the life satisfaction of Czech citizens.

Likvidna metodologija – metafora kao metoda
2024
The paper analyses metaphor as a sociological method. To demonstrate its methodological value, the paper centres on Zygmunt Bauman’s metaphors who used them as a means of effectively conveying sociological interpretations to the public. Experts can use metaphors to generate research questions, and the public can use them to understand the world. While metaphors possess significant heuristic power, they cannot replace empirical evidence. The paper has implications for sociological methodology and to some extent, sociological theory.

NİTEL ARAŞTIRMA DESENLERİNİN MUKAYESESİ: FENOMENOLOJİ VE TEMELLENDİRİLMİŞ KURAM ÖRNEĞİ
This study aims to compare the phenomenological approach and grounded theory from qualitative research methods. First, the phenomenological approach was examined and grounded theory was analyzed. Then, the similarities and differences of both research designs are given respectively. Thus, in the conclusion section of the study, the results obtained from the analyzed findings in the light of the current literature were discussed. In the conclusion reached; it was determined that phenomenology focuses on the more individual, while grounded theory focuses on the more general structure and theory construction. The suggestion presented in the study is; methodological dichotomies should be overcome, research should be conducted on the axis of the research problem and with a conciliatory attitude between research designs. More studies should be conducted in the Turkish literature comparing qualitative research and including discussions focusing on similarities and differences.
