2004
Alcohol use by young people is extremely dangerous - both to themselves and society at large. Underage alcohol use is associated with traffic fatalities, violence, unsafe sex, suicide, educational failure, and other problem behaviors that diminish the prospects of future success, as well as health risks - and the earlier teens start drinking, the greater the danger. Despite these serious concerns, the media continues to make drinking look attractive to youth, and it remains possible and even easy for teenagers to get access to alcohol.
Why is this dangerous behavior so pervasive? What can be done to prevent it? What will work and who is responsible for making sure it happens? Reducing Underage Drinking addresses these questions and proposes a new way to combat underage alcohol use. It explores the ways in which may different individuals and groups contribute to the problem and how they can be enlisted to prevent it. Reducing Underage Drinking will serve as both a game plan and a call to arms for anyone with an investment in youth health and safety.

Self-Medication and Violent Behavior
2009
Ostrowsky identifies the causes and consequences of alcohol and marijuana use among adolescents. Edward Khantzian's \"self-medication hypothesis\" provides the theoretical framework. However, using longitudinal data from the Rochester Youth Development Study, Ostrowsky extends Khantzian's perspective and also moves beyond previous tests of the hypothesis. Overall, the results provide little support to the five predictions of the self-medication hypothesis, but a few interesting findings did emerge. In terms of drug use, weak school commitment predicts an increase in alcohol use and weak parental attachment predicts an increase in marijuana use among early and late adolescent girls. In terms of violence, high self-esteem was found to increase violent behavior among late adolescent girls, contrary to expectation.

A zero-tolerance juvenile alcohol law : why legislation won't work
Currently, there is a dilemma about how to handle alcohol related issues, especially those that involve juvenile offenders and drunk driving. Many traffic safety advocates argue for additional alcohol laws to restrict use and more severe penalties for those laws already being enforced. Conversely, some lawmakers and even college presidents are calling for an ease in the alcohol policies, to include a lower drinking age and state mandated regulation of alcohol use without federal interference. There is little disagreement about the seriousness of DWI offenses. The disagreement is about policy, with the current approach favoring retribution and incarceration, instead of deterrence and rehabilitation. The argument made in this book is that a retribution and incarceration approach has little chance of success and will only add to the problem through higher incarceration rates, the threat of more severe offending, and the implementation of additional policies that will cause net widening.
Understanding and treating adolescent substance abuse
1994,1993
Biological, psychological and social factors are considered in this volume in its exploration of adolescent substance abuse, with adolescents presented as a clearly defined group with unique needs and concerns. The author examines issues such as assessment, treatment planning, service provision and the recovery process, and proposes creative treatment approaches. Integrating the complex elements which impact upon the initiation, maintenance and treatment of young substance abusers, the author uses his biopsychosocial model to examine normative issues for adolescents and how impairment in these areas can cause - or be the result of - substance abuse. Consideration is also given to particularly vulnerable young people, such a.
Alcohol use among adolescents
1999
Covering the latest research and literature on the use of alcohol by adolescents, this concise book provides leads for understanding its aetiology and effective interventions, as well as pointing to future lines of research. Topics covered include: an introduction to the scope of issues related to alcohol use; a review of approaches to the measurement of alcohol-related behaviours among adolescents; and social policy interventions and major conceptual and methodological issues that need to be addressed. The book at once conveys the significance of adolescent alcohol use as a social and clinical problem but also points to promising leads for its amelioration.
