In his remarks at the opening of the Pacific food security summit which started in Port Vila, Vanuatu, today, Deputy Secretary-General of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat Mr Feleti Teo said Forum leaders acknowledged the importance of food security as an emerging development issue, an issue which poses challenges for the future well being of people across the region. The Pacific food security summit is convened by the government of Vanuatu, in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Global Health Institute (Sydney West Area Health Service), Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS), Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

PIDF can provide the space for interactive discussions involving all stakeholders of society on sustainable development issues like coastal fisheries management, Mr [Feleti Teo] added. Mr Teo also briefed the meeting on the partnership that PIDF had established with the World Wildlife Fund for Nature to collaborate in the area of fisheries in the Pacific. These Ten Things now form the core of the strategic underpinnings and the work programme of the PIDF Secretariat. One of the Ten Things is fisheries which is pursued in terms of Food Security for the Pacific, Mr Teo said.

Australian career diplomat and secretary general of the Pacific Islands Forum secretariat, Greg Urwin, has died Samoa at the age of 62.

Greg Urwin, 62, died in Apia last Saturday night after an eight-month illness, acting forum secretary general Feleti Teo said. In a statement posted on the forum website, Mr Teo described Mr Urwin's death as a great loss to the region.

FIJI has one of the most comprehensive constitutions in the world and this is not the case for many countries in the Pacific, says Pacific Forum secretariat deputy secretary Feleti Teo. In the face on a changing environment and global challenges, Mr Teo says Pacific courts are struggling with legislation to deal with issues such as gender equality, environmental destruction and climate change and changing social structures.

\"This is where there will be one centralised negotiation process that will bargain on behalf of the countries in the initiative,\" Mr [Feleti Teo] said. Mr Teo said there would also be transport needs to cater for fuel to small island states suh as Tuvalu, Kiribati and Nauru. Mr Teo said in the absence of a leaders' meeting, the Forum chairman was expected to discharge decisions on their behalf.

\"The invitation to attend the ACP meeting was received quite late but the secretariat, as requested, prepared a report on the progress of the Economic Partnership Agreement negotiations with the European Union and sent it on to forum-member countries we knew were attending the meeting,\" Mr [Feleti Teo] said.
