Vanuatu meeting told food security major challenge for Pacific
In his remarks at the opening of the Pacific food security summit which started in Port Vila, Vanuatu, today, Deputy Secretary-General of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat Mr Feleti Teo said Forum leaders acknowledged the importance of food security as an emerging development issue, an issue which poses challenges for the future well being of people across the region. The Pacific food security summit is convened by the government of Vanuatu, in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Global Health Institute (Sydney West Area Health Service), Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS), Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

PIDF can provide the space for interactive discussions involving all stakeholders of society on sustainable development issues like coastal fisheries management, Mr [Feleti Teo] added. Mr Teo also briefed the meeting on the partnership that PIDF had established with the World Wildlife Fund for Nature to collaborate in the area of fisheries in the Pacific. These Ten Things now form the core of the strategic underpinnings and the work programme of the PIDF Secretariat. One of the Ten Things is fisheries which is pursued in terms of Food Security for the Pacific, Mr Teo said.

Greg Urwin, 62, died in Apia last Saturday night after an eight-month illness, acting forum secretary general Feleti Teo said. In a statement posted on the forum website, Mr Teo described Mr Urwin's death as a great loss to the region.
