Graphene-infused terracotta acoustic sound amplifiers

This work introduces a novel approach for enhancing mobile audio performance by incorporating graphene-infused terracotta as an acoustic amplifier. Leveraging the high thermal conductivity and mechanical strength of graphene, this study demonstrates the design, fabrication, and acoustic characterization of terracotta amplifiers. We demonstrate the significant impact of graphene-infused terracotta amplifiers on improving sound amplification in addition to mechanical strength. A graphene-based dispersion is prepared for incorporation in clay to make the amplifier. Testing is carried out on normal and graphene-dispersion-incorporated terracotta amplifiers. The experimental results illustrate a substantial improvement in audio quality with increased volume compared to conventional terracotta-based mobile speakers. The frequency-dependent variation of the output signal, SNR, and the influence of submerging in water have also been studied. This work contributes to the field of acoustic materials and offers new possibilities for augmenting the auditory experience of mobile device users while also presenting sustainable and aesthetically appealing acoustic accessories.

Hydrogeological solution to the 600-year-old mystery of the terracotta ring wells in Majapahit, Indonesia

Within the realm of the Majapahit Empire, Indonesia (ca. 730 to 550 BCE), terracotta ring wells were used as latrines. Such use discontinued after the demise of the empire and no traces are found of them elsewhere in the Indonesian Archipelago. This mystery of their abandonment at Majapahit has never previously been explored but a viable solution is presented here based on historical precedents, hydrogeological reasoning and climate change.

MLGTM: Multi-Scale Local Geometric Transformer-Mamba Application in Terracotta Warriors Point Cloud Classification

As an important representative of ancient Chinese cultural heritage, the classification of Terracotta Warriors point cloud data aids in cultural heritage preservation and digital reconstruction. However, these data face challenges such as complex morphological and structural variations, sparsity, and irregularity. This paper proposes a method named Multi-scale Local Geometric Transformer-Mamba (MLGTM) to improve the accuracy and robustness of Terracotta Warriors point cloud classification tasks. To effectively capture the geometric information of point clouds, we introduce local geometric encoding, including local coordinates and feature information, effectively capturing the complex local morphology and structural variations of the Terracotta Warriors and extracting representative local features. Additionally, we propose a multi-scale Transformer-Mamba information aggregation module, which employs a dual-branch Transformer with a Mamba structure and finally aggregates them on multiple scales to effectively handle the sparsity and irregularity of the Terracotta Warriors point cloud data. We conducted experiments on several datasets, including the ModelNet40, ScanObjectNN, ShapeNetPart, ETH, and 3D Terracotta Warriors fragment datasets. The results show that our method significantly improves the classification task of Terracotta Warriors point clouds, demonstrating strong accuracy.

This paper explores the integration of chemical data with metric studies and spatial analyses of archaeological artifacts to investigate questions of specialization, standardization, and production organization behind large-scale technological enterprises. The main analytical focus is placed on the 40,000 bronze arrowheads recovered with the Terracotta Army in the First Emperor's Mausoleum, Xi'an, China. Based on the identification by portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometry of chemical clusters that correspond to individual metal batches, and combined with a study of their context in the tomb complex, we argue that the manufacture of arrows was organized via a cellular production model with various multi-skilled units rather than as a single production line. This system favored more adaptable and efficient logistical organization that facilitated dynamic cross-craft interaction while maintaining remarkable degrees of standardization. We discuss the use of \"the batch\" as an analytical category and how our method might be applied to other studies of craft organization in complex societies and imperial systems.

Analysis of newly discovered substances on the vulnerable Emperor Qin Shihuang's Terracotta Army figures

In this paper, X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), Raman spectroscopy (RS), firing temperature analysis, pore size distribution analysis, Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM–EDS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were utilized to analyze the unearthed vulnerable terracotta figures of Emperor Qin Shihuang's Terracotta Army, as well as the unknown precipitated white crystals and black substances. The results show that the firing temperature of the vulnerable terracotta figure is much lower than those of similar terracotta figures and red terracotta figures with good texture. The pore size of this kind of vulnerable pottery is smaller and the specific surface area is larger. In the pores, there is an alkaline solution containing Ca2+ that accounted for approximately 4.3% of the total mass of the sample. Along with the fracture of the delicate pottery matrix, the solution in the pores migrated to the fracture surface and chemically reacted with CO2 in the air, generating a layer of white calcium carbonate crust. The black matter on the fracture surface of the vulnerable terracotta figure is mainly composed of amorphous carbon and graphitized carbon, which shows high activity under the catalysis of Fe and Ti elements and alkaline soil. The discovery and analysis of amorphous carbon, graphitized carbon, and white calcium carbonate crystals on the fracture surface of the Qin Shihuang’s Terracotta Army provide a theoretical foundation for in-depth analysis of the terracotta warriors and horses' composition and structure, as well as scientific protection and restoration, and the stability of the original site display.

THE ART OF TERRACOTTA FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF CULTURAL GEOGRAPHY: TAVAS CASE (DENİZLİ / TURKEY)

The article presents the art of producing terracotta, part of an important cultural heritage in Medet, Tavas region, Denizli province (Turkey). The case study examined the works of Hasan Hüseyin Savçı's family, the only representative of the terracotta art in Denizli. The aim of the undertaken research is to describe, analyze and evaluate the importance of the handicraft for the preservation of the cultural heritage of the region. The research used document analysis, which is one of the qualitative research methods, and additionally a partially structured questionnaire as a data collection tool. The field research was conducted in the Medet District. The undertaken research and analysis of the collected material confirm the great importance of the works of successive generations of the Savçı family for the preservation of the cultural heritage of the region dating back to the early Bronze Age. The handicraft of Necip Savçı, reconstructions and reinterpretations of the works are characterized by exceptional artistry. Research on the local raw material, a structured interview allowed for the documentation of terracotta production techniques and the problems related to their sale. The results of the research emphasized the importance of cultural heritage, such as terracotta, for the preservation of local identity, and at the same time being an important tourist attraction.

Excavation during the 2023 field season at Poggio Civitate focused on areas immediately west of Piano del Tesoro and further refined our understanding of the form and development of the building known as Early Phase Orientalizing Complex Building 4 (abbreviated EPOC4). In addition, excavation re-examined the western area of Orientalizing Complex Building 2/Workshop (abbreviated OC2/Workshop) as well as areas immediately north of OC2/Workshop.

Single Image 3D Reconstruction Algorithm Based on Parallel Double-Branch Pyramid Stacking Network

Limited visual information contained in single images and complex motion models of objects may lead to severe fragmentation and confusion of model backbone in the 3D reconstruction of objects. In order to fully extract feature information in a single image and reduce noise interference caused by environmental factors in 3D reconstruction, a Parallel Dual-Branch Pyramid Stacking Network (PDB-PSN) model is proposed. A parallel dual-branch network model is used to construct an encoder-decoder framework based on cascaded feature extraction, encode/decode high and low-resolution features in a single image, and then convert from 2D to 3D through implicit functions to achieve the 3D reconstruction of target objects in a single image. A cascaded feature extraction network is used as a low-resolution feature extraction network to extract global features of objects. In the high-resolution feature extraction branch, three concatenated hourglass networks and dilated convolutions are used in the hourglass network to increase the receptive field and obtain more global information in order to maintain the integrity of the reconstructed object limbs. A threshold processing module is set to remove irrelevant information and ensure the integrity of global information, and meanwhile, to reduce the interference of irrelevant noise information. Simulation experiments on a self-built terracotta dataset show that the PDB-PSN model can completely reconstruct the 3D model in a single image and effectively eliminate model fragmentation in the reconstruction results.
