ARE THERE ANY OF YOUR FILMS THAT YOU THINK DESERVED MORE ATTENTION? There's been a few of those. Sometimes we miss the boat. Ashes is a great example -- to me it's not only a good film, it has a message, and you need that variety in cinema, but we can't get it screened. To me, it's because we (the British film industry) don't have the cinemas ... If you wish to have an industry, you have to have an outlet for it, and if you're not showing your own films, then you haven't got an industry. It definitely needs to be looked at. WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR UPCOMING FILM NOAH? It's Noah's Ark -- I laughed when it first came through. I thought, 'What am I going to do in Noah's Ark? It's a biblical piece'. '. I laughed again when they said Russell Crowe's playing Noah. But then I thought, 'I'I've never seen Russell in a bad film'.'. Then I heard it was (director) Darren Aronofsky, and then I read the script and I went, 'You know what? Lovely'.'.

If it's the summer, sometimes I'll go to a cafe and have coffee and a bowl of chocolate. The bowl instead of a cup is very 'old French' and you don't often find it. I might have a croissant or a baguette, and watch the world go by and make some more notes. It's wonderful that I have enough French that I can chat, but I'm quite happy to sit quietly and observe. In England, it's quite difficult for me to sit in cafes eavesdropping, because people know me, but they don't in France. I've noticed that hardly anybody uses mobile phones in France, and youngsters actually talk to one another the whole time. I find that curious, especially as in England everyone seems to have fallen in love with their machines. The men play boules in my hamlet and it's clear that they've done it all their lives. You can see them chattering away. At the meetings, nobody is preaching at you, because there is nobody in charge. We sit in silence, and if anybody feels moved to speak they will say something. My friends there know what I'm really like and they are very supportive. There is a great decency about Quakers. They believe in equality, honesty and simplicity. If you have a difficult decision to make in your life, it's good to think about those three guidelines, especially honesty. In conversation with Ciara Dwyer 'Miss Carter's War' by Sheila Hancock is published by Bloomsbury, EUR 16

After South's three-club rebid, North cue-bid three spades, asking South to convert to three no-trump with a spade stopper. Now East might have made a lead-directing double, but he passed again. What should South have done now? She had no spade stopper or secondary heart support. Should she have rebid four clubs with her minimum high-card count, or jumped to five clubs because she had only two spades and solid trumps?

As well as running for 53 episodes over four series, The [Sweeney] was such a hit that two spin-off films, Sweeney! and Sweeney 2 were made in 1977 and 1978. Sunday night on the sofa. C and I are hiding from Monday under a blanket and watching a dvd, the 1998 TV adaptation of Goodnight Mister Tom, starring John Thaw. Yes, it's kids' telly, and no, there are no little people present - I just haven't grown up yet, okay? Anyway, it's moving stuff: dirty-faced, red-kneed evacuees leaving London during the Blitz, John Thaw's silver beard glinting in the ITV studio light. When Mister Tom teaches wee Wille Beech to write his own name, and the sentimental soundtrack changes key, I feel a tremor beneath the blankets. Aha! I know this noise. It is the sound of C trying to get away with having a secret sob.
