\"Performing Migrancy and Mobility in Africa focuses on a body of performance work, the work of Magnet Theatre in particular but also work by other artists in Cape Town and other parts of the continent or the world, that engages with the Cape as a real or imagined node in a complex system of migration and mobility. Located at the foot of the African continent, lodged between two oceans at the intersection of many of the earth's major shipping lanes, Cape Town is a stage for a powerful mixing of cultures and peoples and has been an important node in a network of flows, circuits of movement and exchange. The performance works studied here attempt to get to grips with what it feels like to be on the move and in the spaces in-between that characterises the lives, now and for centuries before, of multiple peoples who move around and pass through places like the Cape. South African performance and archives of memory
This book explores how South Africa is negotiating its past in and through various modes of performance in contemporary theatre, public events and memorial spaces. It analyses the Truth and Reconciliation Commission as a live event, as an archive, and in various theatrical engagements with it, asking throughout how the TRC has affected the definition of identity and memory in contemporary South Africa, including disavowed memories. Hutchison then considers how the SA-Mali Timbuktu Manuscript Project and the 2010 South African World Cup opening ceremony attempted to restage the nation in their own ways. She investigates how the Voortrekker Monument and Freedom Park embody issues related to memory in contemporary South Africa. She also analyses current renegotiations of popular repertoires, particularly songs and dances related to the Struggle, revivals of classic European and South African protest plays, new history plays and specific racial and ethnic histories and identities.

On the Tragedy of the Commoner: Elektra, Orestes, and Others in South Africa
The author discusses the dynamics of the classical tragedy genre in relation to production in South Africa, focusing on \"Molora\" (\"Ash\"), Yael Farber's adaptation of Aeschylus's \"Oresteia,\" first performed in 2003; as well as Athol Fugard, Winston Ntshona, and John Kani's production \"The Island,\" based on Sophocles' \"Antigone,\" presented in 1973; and Fugard's 1971 \"Orestes,\" which addressed the case of anarchist John Harris. Kruger introduces the concept of the \"tragedy of the commoner,\" which stages the tensions between individual desire and common good, in order to focus on \"the struggles of individuals striving for the common good, often against the vested interests of states and their rulers, and the compelling representations of their strivings,\" which casts a shadow on aspirations for reconciliation in South Africa.

The Springfield College Shakespeare Productions
Springfield College of Education was a teacher training college in Durban during the apartheid years. It was intended as a college for Indian students and it opened in 1951. A remarkable tradition of Shakespeare production developed at the College during the next twenty years. The College finally closed in 1999, following a merger with other colleges of education. This whole history takes place against the background of apartheid. Springfield was originally a training college for Indian and 'coloured' students, but the coloured students were re-located to Bechet High School and Training College in 1956 (Springfield Training College Magazine [STCM] 1.4 7). This was in accordance with the Nationalist policy of 'separate development'. Originally the college came under the control of the United Party dominated Natal Provincial Administration and formed part of the Natal Education Department, under the same Director of Education as the white government schools in Natal. In 1966, control of Springfield College transferred to the Director of Indian Education (Aurora 2.4 1). Henceforward, there were some controversial political appointments to senior positions in Indian Education.
