Verification of lexic ontologies by the method of using semantic proximity of words calculated by large corpus of texts
The paper analyzes the concepts and relations between them in the RuWordNet digital thesaurus of the Russian language. Semantically related words automatically extracted from the corpus of texts are compared with the words of the thesaurus. The characteristic cases of information gap (omission of word meanings and semantic relationships) in the thesaurus are revealed, their causes of a computer and cognitive nature are described. Recommendations on improving the RuWordNet thesaurus are given.
Thesaurus-based methods for mapping contents of publication sets
Visualization of literature-related information is common in scientometrics and related fields. Despite this, relatively little work has been done to visualize knowledge organization systems, such as controlled vocabularies or thesauri. In this paper we explore the creation and use of contextual visualizations based on thesauri. Two different methods are developed for creating maps of thesaurus terms that can then be used as templates or basemaps on which to display the contents of publication sets. The first example maps first-level terms from the Unified Astronomy Thesaurus into a wheel-like (hub and spokes) configuration. This circular map can then be used to show relative positions of clusters of astronomy papers from different cluster solutions based on the thesaurus terms assigned to the papers in the clusters. The second example triangulates the entire Public Library of Science (PLOS) thesaurus onto a global map of science, and then uses the resulting map of thesaurus terms as the basis for an overlay map. This map can be used for several purposes, including mapping of subsets of PLOS content, and the identification of thesaurus terms whose rule bases may need to be changed.
Thesaurus tool for analysing the semantic compatibility of educational texts
The developed software is designed to analyze the semantic compatibility of educational text materials. This need is due to the existing negative trends noted by scientists (didactics, psychologists, neuroscientists) in the mechanism of information perception in the learning process of the modern generation of students. The way to level this tendency in the educational process is to take into account the unconscious patterns of information perception, associated with a gradual increase in its complexity. Semantic compatibility in the developed program is assessed by comparing the thesauri of educational materials, which allows in the future to influence the required degree of increase in their novelty (and, as a consequence, complexity). The work algorithm is formed taking into account the specific variable features of the Russian language. The proposed analytical tool is intended for didactic use, but due to the flexibility of the action algorithms provided by the program, it allows the use of the software product for the analysis of texts for other purposes, for which compatibility is of practical importance.
A systematic approach to searching: an efficient and complete method to develop literature searches
Creating search strategies for systematic reviews, finding the best balance between sensitivity and specificity, and translating search strategies between databases is challenging. Several methods describe standards for systematic search strategies, but a consistent approach for creating an exhaustive search strategy has not yet been fully described in enough detail to be fully replicable. The authors have established a method that describes step by step the process of developing a systematic search strategy as needed in the systematic review. This method describes how single-line search strategies can be prepared in a text document by typing search syntax (such as field codes, parentheses, and Boolean operators) before copying and pasting search terms (keywords and free-text synonyms) that are found in the thesaurus. To help ensure term completeness, we developed a novel optimization technique that is mainly based on comparing the results retrieved by thesaurus terms with those retrieved by the free-text search words to identify potentially relevant candidate search terms. Macros in Microsoft Word have been developed to convert syntaxes between databases and interfaces almost automatically. This method helps information specialists in developing librarian-mediated searches for systematic reviews as well as medical and health care practitioners who are searching for evidence to answer clinical questions. The described method can be used to create complex and comprehensive search strategies for different databases and interfaces, such as those that are needed when searching for relevant references for systematic reviews, and will assist both information specialists and practitioners when they are searching the biomedical literature.
Controlled Multilingual Thesauri for Kazakh Industry-Specific Terms
This article discusses the practical issues of compiling controlled multilingual thesauri for the purposes of industry-specific translation (IST). In the multilingual, transnational and globally connected Kazakhstan, IST is a much-needed translation service. IST is an interdisciplinary field between terminology, computational linguistics, translation theory and practice. Most of the professional guides, dictionaries and glossaries are systemized in alphabetical order and contain multiple variants for the terms searched. Therefore, there is an urgent need to create a systemized controlled multilingual thesaurus of industry-specific Kazakh, English and Russian terms in order to provide multilingual users with an interoperable and relevant term base. Controlled multilingual thesauri for industry-specific terms are the most effective tools for describing individual subject areas. They are designed to promote communication and interaction among professionals, translators and all Automated Information System users of specific fields irrespective of their location and health conditions. Unlike traditional dictionaries, controlled thesauri allow users to identify the meaning with the help of definitions and translations, relations of terms with other concepts, and broader and narrower terms. The purpose of this research is to unify and systematize industry-specific terms in Kazakh, to provide Russian and English equivalents, and to classify the terms into essential rubrics and subjects. Based on the Zthes data scheme to create a controlled multilingual thesaurus of industryspecific terms, the major rubrics have been formulated, and about 10,000 Kazakh mining and metal terms approved by the Terminological Committee of Kazakhstan have been structured.
Interdisciplinarity and collaboration: on the relationship between disciplinary diversity in departmental affiliations and reference lists
This study explores the characteristics of scientific activity patterns through co-author affiliations to obtain new insights into interdisciplinary research. To classify the interdisciplinarity in research, we explored and compared two different approaches: the diversity of disciplines reflected in the listed affiliations of the authors and the diversity of the subject categories reflected in the reference list. To assess the diversity in departmental affiliations, we developed an explorative methodology that retrieves feature words from a combination of manual work and the thesaurus function in the Thomson Data Analyzer text mining tool. To assess the diversity in references, we followed the conventional approach applied in previous work. With both approaches, we relied on diversity as the measure for assessing interdisciplinarity of 157,710 articles published in PloS One (2007–2016). Based on a comparison between the results of both approaches, our study confirms that different methodologies and indicators can produce seriously inconsistent, and even contradictory results. In addition, different indicators may capture different understandings of such a multi-faceted concept as interdisciplinarity. Our results are summarized in a schematic representation of this twofold perspective as a method of indexing the different types of interdisciplinarity commonly found in research studies.
Uncovering a Massive z ∼ 7.7 Galaxy Hosting a Heavily Obscured Radio-loud Active Galactic Nucleus Candidate in COSMOS-Web
In this Letter, we report the discovery of the highest redshift, heavily obscured, radio-loud (RL) active galactic nucleus (AGN) candidate selected using JWST NIRCam/MIRI, mid-IR, submillimeter, and radio imaging in the COSMOS-Web field. Using multifrequency radio observations and mid-IR photometry, we identify a powerful, RL, growing supermassive black hole with significant spectral steepening of the radio spectral energy distribution (f 1.28 GHz ∼ 2 mJy, q 24 μm = −1.1, α 1.28−3 GHz = − 1.2, Δα = − 0.4). In conjunction with ALMA, deep ground-based observations, ancillary space-based data, and the unprecedented resolution and sensitivity of JWST, we find no evidence of AGN contribution to the UV/optical/near-infrared (NIR) data and thus infer heavy amounts of obscuration (N H > 1023 cm−2). Using the wealth of deep UV to submillimeter photometric data, we report a singular solution photo-z of z phot = 7.7−0.3+0.4 and estimate an extremely massive host galaxy (logM⋆=11.92±0.5M⊙) hosting a powerful, growing supermassive black hole​​​​​ (L Bol = 4−12x × 1046 erg s−1). This source represents the farthest known obscured RL AGN candidate, and its level of obscuration aligns with the most representative but observationally scarce population of AGN at these epochs.
