Thomas Jefferson loved to read and collect books on almost every subject. He built his first library as a young man, and kept on building until his book collection helped to create the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., the world's largest library.
A Blueprint of His Mind: Reconstructing the Jefferson Collection
1999
Contribution to a special end of the century history issue. In 1815 Thomas Jefferson sold his personal library to the US nation to rebuild the Library of Congress after every title but one in its collections was lost in the 1814 burning of the Capitol by the British during the War of 1812. As part of the Library of Congress bicentennial celebration in 2000, a world-wide search is underway to reconstruct this core collection, which was nearly destroyed by another Capitol fire in 1851. Approximately 700 titles remain to be found. Both the holdings and the catalogue Jefferson created to document them are a remarkable record of the interests, mind, and manner of one of America's first men of letters.
