Environmental refugees: a growing phenomenon of the 21st century

There is a new phenomenon in the global arena: environmental refugees. These are people who can no longer gain a secure livelihood in their homelands because of drought, soil erosion, desertification, deforestation and other environmental problems, together with the associated problems of population pressures and profound poverty. In their desperation, these people feel they have no alternative but to seek sanctuary elsewhere, however hazardous the attempt. Not all of them have fled their countries, many being internally displaced. But all have abandoned their homelands on a semi-permanent if not permanent basis, with little hope of a foreseeable return. In 1995, environmental refugees totalled at least 25 million people, compared with 27 million traditional refugees (people fleeing political oppression, religious persecution and ethnic troubles). The total number of environmental refugees could well double by the year 2010, and increase steadily for a good while thereafter as growing numbers of impoverished people press ever harder on overloaded environments. When global warming takes hold, there could be as many as 200 million people overtaken by sea-level rise and coastal flooding, by disruptions of monsoon systems and other rainfall regimes, and by droughts of unprecedented severity and duration.

Replacement migration, or why everyone is going to have to live in Korea: a fable for our times from the United Nations

This paper considers international migration in the context of population ageing. In many Western countries, the search for appropriate responses to manage future population ageing and population decline has directed attention to international migration. It seems reasonable to believe that international migrants, mostly of young working age, can supply population deficits created by low birth rates, protect European society and economy from the economic costs of elderly dependency, and provide a workforce to care for the elderly. Particular prominence has been given to this option through the publicity attendant on a report from the UN Population Division in 2000 on 'replacement migration', which has been widely reported and widely misunderstood. Although immigration can prevent population decline, it is already well known that it can only prevent population ageing at unprecedented, unsustainable and increasing levels of inflow, which would generate rapid population growth and eventually displace the original population from its majority position. This paper reviews these arguments in the context of the causes and inevitability of population ageing, with examples mostly based on UK data. It discusses various options available in response to population ageing through workforce, productivity, pensions reform and other means. It concludes that there can be no 'solution' to population ageing, which is to a considerable degree unavoidable. However, if the demographic regime of the United Kingdom continues to be relatively benign, future population ageing can be managed with tolerable inconvenience without recourse to increased immigration for 'demographic' purposes. At present (2001), net immigration to the United Kingdom is already running at record levels and is now the main engine behind UK population and household growth. By itself, population stabilization, or even mild reduction, is probably to be welcomed in the United Kingdom, although the issue has attracted little attention since the 1970s.

New directions for migration policy in Europe

There is a growing debate about the future direction of migration policy in Europe. After nearly 30 years of pursuing restrictive immigration and asylum policies, many European Union (EU) governments are beginning to re-assess their migration policies and to call for a new approach. For the first time in many years, several EU governments have begun to talk again about the benefits of labour migration and, even more significantly, have even begun to take action to recruit more migrants, especially skilled workers. This paper looks at the background to current calls for a new approach to migration in Europe and public reaction to these new initiatives. It first describes recent trends in migration in Europe and then briefly considers the demographic case for more migration. This is followed by a brief outline of some of the measures being considered by European governments to promote selective labour migration. The remainder of the paper is devoted to a discussion of some of the implications of this change in policy, focusing on two main issues: the likely consequences for sending countries, and the implications for the fight against the smuggling and trafficking of people.

An introduction to three papers on human migration by Coleman, Laczko and Myers

Human migration is an activity that is as old as humanity itself. Yet it remains a sensitive and politically charged subject, creating tensions in societies that experience it. It is closely linked to economic, environmental, demographic and political factors. It has become a conspicuous feature of the world political and demographic scene, with an estimated number of 22 million migrants in the past year. It shows every sign of accelerating in the future, not only because of poverty, civil war and politics, but also from environmental reasons that, in the future, may cause still larger-scale migration. Migration will be influenced by a host of such factors as climate change, sea-level rise, desertification, and environmental degradation generally.

Engraftment of bioengineered three-dimensional scaffold from human amniotic membrane-derived extracellular matrix accelerates ischemic diabetic wound healing

Human amniotic membrane (HAM) is traditionally used for the treatment of non-healing wounds. However, high density of HAM-matrix (HAM-M) diminishes cellular contribution for successful tissue regeneration. Herein we investigated whether a bioengineered micro-porous three-dimensional (3D) HAM-scaffold (HAM-S) could promote healing in ischemic wounds in diabetic type 1 rat. HAM-S was prepared from freshly decellularized HAM. Then, 30 days after inducing diabetes, an ischemic circular excision was generated on rats’ skin. The diabetic animals were randomly divided into untreated (Diabetic group), engrafted with HAM-M (D-HAM-M group) and HAM-S (D-HAM-S group). Also, non-diabeticuntreated rats (Healthy group) were considered as control. Stereological, molecular, and tensiometrical assessments were performed on post-surgical days 7, 14, and 21. We found that the volumes of new epidermis and dermis, the numerical density of epidermal basal cells and fibroblasts, the length density of blood vessels, the numbers of proliferating cells and collagen deposition as well as biomechanical properties of healed wound were significantly higher in D-HAM-S group in most cases compared those of the diabetic group, or even in some cases compared to D-HAM-M group. Furthermore, in D-HAM-S group, the transcripts for genes contributing to regeneration (

) upregulated more than those of D-HAM-M group, when compared to diabetic ones. Overall, the HAM-S had more impact on delayed wound healing process compared to traditional use of intact HAM. It is therefore suggested that the bioengineered three dimensional micro-porous HAM-S is more suitable for cells adhesion, penetration, and migration for contributing to wounded tissue regeneration.

The dynamics of DNA in the cell nucleus plays a role in cellular processes and fates but the interplay of DNA mobility with the hierarchical levels of DNA organization is still underexplored. Here, we made use of DNA replication to directly label genomic DNA in an unbiased genome-wide manner. This was followed by live-cell time-lapse microscopy of the labeled DNA combining imaging at different resolutions levels simultaneously and allowing one to trace DNA motion across organization levels within the same cells. Quantification of the labeled DNA segments at different microscopic resolution levels revealed sizes comparable to the ones reported for DNA loops using 3D super-resolution microscopy, topologically associated domains (TAD) using 3D widefield microscopy, and also entire chromosomes. By employing advanced chromatin tracking and image registration, we discovered that DNA exhibited higher mobility at the individual loop level compared to the TAD level and even less at the chromosome level. Additionally, our findings indicate that chromatin movement, regardless of the resolution, slowed down during the S phase of the cell cycle compared to the G1/G2 phases. Furthermore, we found that a fraction of DNA loops and TADs exhibited directed movement with the majority depicting constrained movement. Our data also indicated spatial mobility differences with DNA loops and TADs at the nuclear periphery and the nuclear interior exhibiting lower velocity and radius of gyration than the intermediate locations. On the basis of these insights, we propose that there is a link between DNA mobility and its organizational structure including spatial distribution, which impacts cellular processes.

Bio-logging, the on-animal deployment of miniaturised electronic data recorders, allows for the study of location, body position, and physiology of individuals throughout their ontogeny. For terrestrial animals, 1 Hz GPS-position, 3D-body acceleration, and ambient temperature provide standard data to link to the physiology of life histories. Environmental context is added at ever finer scales using remote sensing earth observation data. Here we showcase the use of such bio-logging approaches in a conservation physiology study on endangered Himalayan vultures (
Gyps himalayensis
). We determine environmental, behavioural, and physiological causes of survival in immature birds that roam from wintering sites in India, Bhutan, and Nepal towards summer areas in Tibet and Mongolia. Five of 18 immature griffons died during one year. Individuals that died had failed to migrate sufficiently far northward (>1500 km) in spring. Individuals likely died if they flew against headwinds from the north or were less able to find thermal updrafts. Surviving individuals migrated to cold and dry areas with low population density. We highlight flight experience, long distance movements, and remote places with low human population as factors critical for the survival of Himalayan vultures. High-resolution bio-logging studies can advance conservation management by pinpointing where and why migratory animals have problems and die.

Loading BMP-2 on nanostructured hydroxyapatite microspheres for rapid bone regeneration

Tissue engineering is a promising strategy for bone regeneration in repairing massive bone defects. The surface morphology of implanted materials plays a key role in bone healing; these materials incorporate osteoinductive factors to improve the efficiency of bone regeneration.
In the current study, nanostructured hydroxyapatite (nHAp) micro-spheres were prepared via a hydrothermal transformation method using calcium silicate (CS) microspheres as precursors; the CS microspheres were obtained by a spray-drying method. The nHAp microspheres constructed by the nano-whiskers significantly improved the ability of the microspheres to adsorb the bioactive protein (BMP-2) and reduce its initial burst release. To evaluate the in vivo bone regeneration of microspheres, both conventional hydroxyapatite (HAp) and nHAp microspheres were either loaded with recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) or not loaded with the protein; these microspheres were implanted in rat femoral bone defects for 4 and 8 weeks.
The results of our three-dimensional (3D) micro-computed tomography (CT) and histomorphometric observations showed that the combination of the nano-structured surface and rhBMP-2 obviously improved osteogenesis compared to conventional HAp microspheres loaded with rhBMP-2. Our results suggest that the nHAp microspheres with a nanostructured surface adsorb rhBMP-2 for rapid bone formation; they therefore show the potential to act as carriers in bone tissue regeneration.

Objectives
To build a three-dimensional co-culture model in a microfluidic device for cancer research and evaluate its feasibility by investigating cancer stem-like cells (SCs) induced migration of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (ECs).
Results
The microfluidic device provided two-dimensional and three-dimensional (2D/3D) culture and co-culture environments without affecting cell viability. The device also provided an effective concentration for the chemiotaxis of cells, and to support real-time monitoring of cell behavior. In this model, SCs significantly increased the migration area of ECs with a hepatocarcinoma cell line (MHCC97H; MCs). The presence of ECs also induced both MCs and SCs invasion into Matrigel. The migration area of MCs and SCs significantly increased when co-cultured with ECs.
Conclusions
This 3D co-culture microfluidic model is a suitable model in cancer research. Compared with MCs, SCs had greater potential in inducing EC migration and interacting with ECs.

In this paper, we explain the stability of top university ranks and discuss attempts to create top national universities. Firstly, it is shown theoretically that in a world with differently-gifted poor and rich students, a three-tier university system may become very stable, with a super league of the best research universities that attract the best students, whether rich or poor. Secondly, it is empirically demonstrated that half of the highest ranked universities enjoy very stable competitive advantages. Thirdly, we examine attempts of China, France and Germany to overcome these disadvantages and to get into this super league. The recent attempt of China to create such super league universities shows the financial and societal costs of these attempts. France demonstrates how the concentration of financial resources on two newly built universities that complement the forces of existing ones—either real or only by labelling—may succeed. Despite the complexly designed and competitive German Excellence Initiative, ongoing since 2004, no German university was among the top 50 in the Shanghai ranking in 2021 (compared to one university in 2004). The mixed results of all these worldwide attempts may reflect the problem that late market entry into the super league may be too costly, given that the classical university business model is in the mature phase of its life cycle.
