Thumbnail-preserving encryption by sum-preserving within blocks based on exponential chaotic map
With the dramatic increase in the number of images in recent years, more and more images are stored in the cloud space. Traditional image encryption only guarantees the confidentiality of the image without taking into account the availability of the image, which greatly weakens the convenience of cloud storage. Thumbnail-preserving encryption (TPE) is used to break this deadlock, which can take into account the availability and confidentiality of the image at the same time. However, the existing multi-pixel TPE scheme has poor temporal performance, and the 2-pixel TPE scheme requires multiple encryptions to ensure the confidentiality of the image. Due to the excellent properties of chaotic maps, in this paper, a 3-pixel thumbnail-preserving encryption algorithm based on exponential chaotic map is proposed by combining chaotic map with TPE scheme. The experimental results show that the proposed chaotic map has good chaotic properties, the TPE scheme has better temporal performance and higher security, which is somewhat competitiveness.
TPE-MM: Thumbnail preserving encryption scheme based on Markov model for JPEG images
Advances in mobile communication have enabled images to be shared more conveniently, and the consequent risk of privacy breaches has been increasingly emphasized. Previously, traditional image encryption algorithms were mostly adopted by individuals to encrypt plain images into noise-like meaningless cipher images. This type of algorithm provides security for image privacy protection but is unable to achieve usability in cloud platforms. Furthermore, existing image encryption algorithms only target the protection of lossless compression or non-compressed formats images (e.g., BMP, PNG, etc.), but neglect the encryption needs of JPEG format images. Since the latter has the benefits of less file storage and excellent visual quality, it has been widely applied in a variety of scenarios. Thus, a thumbnail preserving encryption (TPE) scheme based on Markov model (TPE-MM) for JPEG images is proposed to equilibrate security and availability. Specifically, an approximate sum-preserving encryption method (ASP-EM) in restricted range based on its features is proposed to preserve the plain thumbnail features to accomplish cipher image usability. Subsequently, an adaptive encryption method based on Markov model (AEM-MM) was proposed to improve the encryption effect of cipher images and retain the compression performance of JPEG images. Simulation experiments show that the cipher image has good visual quality, low expansion rate, and is resistant to outline attacks.

Fostering inclusive science media: Insights from examining the relationship between women’s identities and their anticipated engagement with Deep Look YouTube science videos
As science media content creators strive for inclusivity in communication design and promotion, they must consider the influence of audiences’ identities on their engagement with science media. A gender gap in viewership or \"missing audience\" has been identified for women viewers for educational science content on digital media; one such example of this is Deep Look , a science video series from KQED public media and PBS Digital Studios distributed on YouTube. This study used a mixed method design (1) to examine women’s preferences for Deep Look YouTube video promotions (i.e., episode titles and thumbnail images—the images that act as a preview for the video) to best inform future design of promotional content for these videos to attract more women viewers, and (2) to explore how women’s preferences for science content are linked to their social identities, science identity, and science curiosity. Findings indicated that women’s preferences for promotions for Deep Look YouTube science and nature videos followed expected trends with most women preferring images perceived as visually attractive and colorful more than images perceived as disgusting or gross. However, these preferences were conditional on science curiosity and science identity. Findings indicated that to boost women’s engagement with YouTube science and nature videos, content creators may find it useful to consider how science curious various women audiences are, how strongly women viewers identify with being a science person, and how their most salient social identities motivate engagement.
