The synergistic effect of the industrial international competitiveness and coopetition network position on market share: evidence from global automobile industry

Purpose
This paper aims to examine how the firm’s global coopetition network position impacts market share and to explore the multiple moderating effects of trade network strength and structures on the relationship between firm global coopetition network position and market share.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper selects global automobile manufacturing firms as samples whose classification is “Automobile” in the Factiva database from 2014 to 2018 and develops the measurement for global coopetition network and trade network by using Ucinet6. Finally, Stata was used for data analysis.
Findings
This paper finds that structural holes and centrality are beneficial to improve global market share. And the trade network strength and structures have positive multiple moderating effects on the relationship between the firm global coopetition network position and market share.
Originality/value
This paper explores industrial international competitiveness according to the intricate trade relations among countries and the impact of industrial international competitiveness on the relationship between global coopetition network position of brand firms and market share. The results of this paper expand the current literature on the relationship between characteristics of coopetition network and trade network.

The global arms and integrated circuits trade through complex network analysis

Open access to a wide range of economic databases enables researchers to explore the global economy using computational methods. This paper applies network analysis to global export data to investigate complex interdependencies. Given that the nature of exported products is a crucial element of foreign policy, the insights gained from such analysis are particularly valuable when viewed alongside concurrent geopolitical trends. This paper examines export data for light arms, ammunition, and related parts, as well as electronic integrated circuits and their components, across more than 220 countries and territories. By creating directed, weighted networks based on export volumes from 2003 to 2022, this analysis identifies key exporting countries in each category and traces shifts in geopolitical influence over time. In the light arms sector, traditional powers such as the USA, France, Germany, Great Britain, and Italy dominate, along with emerging players like Turkey. In contrast, in the field of electronic integrated circuits, East Asian countries-particularly Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China- dominate global trade, surpassing traditionally strong Western economies, such as the USA, Canada, and the European Union.

Polities and nomads: the emergence of the Silk Road exchange in the Tarim Basin region during late prehistory (2000–400 bce)

The Silk Road trade network was arguably the most important network of global exchange and interaction prior to the fifteenth century. On the question of how and when it developed, scholars have focused mainly on the role of either the empires dominating the two ends of the trade network or the nomadic empires on the Eurasian steppe. The sedentary people of Central Asia have, however, mostly been neglected. This article traces the development of the city-states of the Tarim Basin in eastern Central Asia, from c. 2000 bce to 400 bce. It argues that the development of the city-states of the Tarim Basin is closely linked to the rise of the ancient Silk Road and that the interaction between the Tarim polities, the nomads of the Eurasian steppe and the Han Empire was the central dynamic in the creation of the ancient Silk Road network in eastern Central Asia.

Impacts of climate change on global food trade networks

Countries' reliance on global food trade networks implies that regionally different climate change impacts on crop yields will be transmitted across borders. This redistribution constitutes a significant challenge for climate adaptation planning and may affect how countries engage in cooperative action. This paper investigates the long-term (2070–2099) potential impacts of climate change on global food trade networks of three key crops: wheat, rice and maize. We propose a simple network model to project how climate change impacts on crop yields may be translated into changes in trade. Combining trade and climate impact data, our analysis proceeds in three steps. First, we use network community detection to analyse how the concentration of global production in present-day trade communities may become disrupted with climate change impacts. Second, we study how countries may change their network position following climate change impacts. Third, we study the total climate-induced change in production plus import within trade communities. Results indicate that the stability of food trade network structures compared to today differs between crops, and that countries' maize trade is least stable under climate change impacts. Results also project that threats to global food security may depend on production change in a few major global producers, and whether trade communities can balance production and import loss in some vulnerable countries. Overall, our model contributes a baseline analysis of cross-border climate impacts on food trade networks.

The Research on the Impact of Regional Trade Network Relationships on Value Chain Resilience in China’s Service Industry

Regional trade network relationships are not only a medium for transmitting shocks to value chains, but also an important vehicle for reconfiguring value chains. This article applies social network analysis, combines regional trade agreements, and describes the current status of regional trade network development in North America, the European Union, and “the Belt and Road,” as well as the individual characteristics of China’s service industry in each regional trade network by using the indicators of trade relations to construct the network density, connectedness, and centrality through clustering analysis. The research found that the complexity of regional trade network relationships has increased over the years. Additionally, the developing trend of equalization is accelerating but still exhibits a “Core-Periphery” structure. Additionally, subregional groups within the regional trade network are increasingly obvious. Further study on the impact of industry regional centrality on value chain resilience revealed that the increase of degree centrality and the betweenness centrality of China’s service industry can conspicuously strengthen value chain resilience in regional trade network relationships. Moreover, balanced regional trade network relationships can reinforce this effect. In contrast, the degree of the polarity of regional trade network relationships exacerbates the weakening motivation of centrality for value chain resilience.

Effects of simplicial centrality on robustness of higher-order multiplex world trade networks

World trade networks are exhaustively described by pairwise interactions, and overlook higher-order structure from the outcome of collective interactions at the level of groups of nodes like multilateral trade agreements. To address this limitation, we collect multiplex world trade networks, including the bilateral regional trade agreement network, which represents pairwise interactions; the multilateral regional trade agreement network, which naturally represents a higher-order network structure; and the import and export trade network, which represents pairwise interactions and additional complexities. The analysis of simplicial centrality, including degree, closeness, and subgraph at 0, 1, and 2-simplex levels, reveals that intra-level correlations are high, while inter-levels may exhibit significant disparities. Nodes with low centrality at higher-order levels could influence network robustness due to the diversity of interactions and higher-order dependencies. Simplicial centrality on robustness of multiplex world trade networks under random and targeted attacks reveals that the complex connectivity of higher-order levels renders them more vulnerable post-attack. An optimization strategy of the rebalancing of network centrality is proposed to enhance the robustness, and the simulation shows risks posed to central nodes are minimized and opportunities for peripheral nodes to partake in global trade are broadened.

The Global Industrial Robot Trade Network: Evolution and China’s Rising International Competitiveness

This paper examines the spatial and temporal evolution of the global industrial robot trade network (GIRTN) from 2000 to 2023 using complex network analysis, and it systematically evaluates China’s position in the GIRTN and its evolutionary trend by combining node reciprocity, the industry concentration index, the Herfindahl–Hirschman index, and betweenness centrality. The study shows that the GIRTN is characterized by significant imbalance, a “small world”, and weak reciprocity. Traditional industrial countries such as Japan, Germany, and France have dominated the global market for a long time, accounting for more than 80% of the market share. However, market imbalances have been mitigated with the rise of emerging economies such as China, South Korea, and Singapore. Despite increasing global trade linkages, there are significant differences in trade intensity. China’s position and competitiveness in the GIRTN have significantly improved, as demonstrated by its continued rise in the ranking of total exports, the improvement in the attractiveness and quality of its products, the diversification of its trading partners, and the optimization of its export structure. These changes indicate that China has gained significant competitive advantages and has great potential for development.

Emerging illegal wildlife trade issues: A global horizon scan

Illegal wildlife trade is gaining prominence as a threat to biodiversity, but addressing it remains challenging. To help inform proactive policy responses in the face of uncertainty, in 2018 we conducted a horizon scan of significant emerging issues. We built upon existing iterative horizon scanning methods, using an open and global participatory approach to evaluate and rank issues from a diverse range of sources. Prioritized issues related to three themes: developments in biological, information, and financial technologies; changing trends in demand and information; and socioeconomic, geopolitical shifts and influences. The issues covered areas ranging from changing demographic and economic factors to innovations in technology and communications that affect illegal wildlife trade markets globally; the top three issues related to China, illustrating its vital role in tackling emerging threats. This analysis can support national governments, international bodies, researchers, and nongovernmental organizations as they develop strategies for addressing the illegal wildlife trade.
