In smart cities, the fast increase in automobiles has caused congestion, pollution, and disruptions in the transportation of commodities. Each year, there are more fatalities and cases of permanent impairment due to everyday road accidents. To control traffic congestion, provide secure data transmission also detecting accidents the IoT-based Traffic Management System is used. To identify, gather, and send data, autonomous cars, and intelligent gadgets are equipped with an IoT-based ITM system with a group of sensors. The transport system is being improved via machine learning. In this work, an Adaptive Traffic Management system (ATM) with an accident alert sound system (AALS) is used for managing traffic congestion and detecting the accident. For secure traffic data transmission Secure Early Traffic-Related EveNt Detection (SEE-TREND) is used. The design makes use of several scenarios to address every potential problem with the transportation system. The suggested ATM model continuously modifies the timing of traffic signals based on the volume of traffic and anticipated movements from neighboring junctions. By progressively allowing cars to pass green lights, it considerably reduces traveling time. It also relieves traffic congestion by creating a seamless transition. The results of the trial show that the suggested ATM system fared noticeably better than the traditional traffic-management method and will be a leader in transportation planning for smart-city-based transportation systems. The suggested ATM-ALTREND solution provides secure traffic data transmission that decreases traffic jams and vehicle wait times, lowers accident rates, and enhances the entire travel experience.

Empirical Features of Congested Traffic States and Their Implications for Traffic Modeling

We address the controversial issue of traffic flow modeling, whether first-order, second-order, or other traffic models are best supported by empirical facts and theoretical considerations. This is done by a critical discussion of the pros and cons of the different theoretical approaches and by the analysis of a large set of empirical data with new evaluation techniques. Specifically, we investigate characteristic properties of the congested traffic states on a 30-km-long stretch of the German freeway A5 near Frankfurt/Main. Among the approximately 245 breakdowns of traffic flow at several different bottlenecks in 165 days, we have identified five different kinds of spatiotemporal congestion patterns and their combinations. Based on an \"adaptive smoothing method\" for the visualization of detector data, we also discuss particular features of breakdowns, such as signs of unstable traffic flow and the \"boomerang effect,\" which often seems to be caused by overtaking maneuvers of trucks. Controversial issues such as \"synchronized flow\" or stop-and-go waves are addressed as well. Our empirical results are compared with the implications of different theoretical concepts such as first-order traffic models and the phase diagram of congested traffic states predicted by some second-order models and the nonlocal, gas-kinetic based traffic model (GKT model). For a correct understanding of empirical observations such as the \"general pattern,\" it is important to consider particularities such as the fact that off-ramps can act as bottlenecks, when activated by downstream on-ramp bottlenecks. As sequences of off- and on-ramps generate different congestion patterns than single on-ramps, they must be treated as interconnected bottlenecks. Furthermore, our empirical results question Kerner's three-phase theory.

The present era is marked by rapid improvement and advances in technology. One of the most essential areas that demand improvement is the traffic signal, as it constitutes the core of the traffic system. This demand becomes stringent with the development of Smart Cities. Unfortunately, road traffic is currently controlled by very old traffic signals (tri-color signals) regardless of the relentless effort devoted to developing and improving the traffic flow. These traditional traffic signals have many problems including inefficient time management in road intersections; they are not immune to some environmental conditions, like rain; and they have no means of giving priority to emergency vehicles. New technologies like Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANET) and Internet of Vehicles (IoV) enable vehicles to communicate with those nearby and with a dedicated infrastructure wirelessly. In this paper, we propose a new traffic management system based on the existing VANET and IoV that is suitable for future traffic systems and Smart Cities. In this paper, we present the architecture of our proposed Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) and Smart Traffic Signal (STS) controller. We present local traffic management of an intersection based on the demands of future Smart Cities for fairness, reducing commute time, providing reasonable traffic flow, reducing traffic congestion, and giving priority to emergency vehicles. Simulation results showed that the proposed system outperforms the traditional management system and could be a candidate for the traffic management system in future Smart Cities. Our proposed adaptive algorithm not only significantly reduces the average waiting time (delay) but also increases the number of serviced vehicles. Besides, we present the implemented hardware prototype for STS.

Traffic congestion in urban networks may lead to strong degradation in the utilization of the network infrastructure, which can be mitigated via suitable control strategies. This paper studies and analyzes the performance of an adaptive traffic-responsive strategy that controls the traffic light parameters in an urban network to reduce traffic congestion. A nearly optimal control formulation is adopted to avoid the curse of dimensionality occurring in the solution of the corresponding Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman (HJB) optimal control problem. First, an (approximate) solution of the HJB is parametrized via an appropriate Lyapunov function; then, the solution is updated at each iteration in such a way to approach the nearly optimal solution, using a close-to-optimality index and information coming from the simulation model of the network (simulation-based design). Simulation results obtained using a traffic simulation model of the network Chania, Greece, an urban traffic network containing many varieties of junction staging, demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed approach, as compared with alternative traffic strategies based on a simplified linear model of the traffic network. It is shown that the proposed strategy can adapt to different traffic conditions and that low-complexity parametrizations of the optimal solution, a linear and a bimodal piecewise linear strategy, respectively, provide a satisfactory trade-off between computational complexity and network performance.

Catastrophic factors involved in road accidents: Underlying causes and descriptive analysis

South Korea is ranked as 4th among 34 nations of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development with 102 deaths in road accidents per one million population. This paper aims to investigate the factors associated with road accidents in South Korea. The rainfall data of the Korea Meteorological Administration and road accidents data of Traffic Accident Analysis System of Korea Road Traffic Authority is analyzed for this purpose. In this connection, multivariate regression analysis and ratio analysis with the descriptive analysis are performed to uncover the catastrophic factors involved. In turn, the results reveal that traffic volume is the leading factor in road accidents. The limited road extension of 1.47% compared to the 4.14% per annum growth of the vehicles is resulting in road accidents at such a large scale. The increasing proportion of passenger cars accelerate road accidents as well. 56% of accidents occur by the infringement of safety driving violations. The drivers with higher driving experience tend to have a higher accident ratio. The collected data is analyzed in terms of gender, driver experience, type of violations and accidents as well as the associated time of the accidents when they happen. The results indicate that 36.29% and 53.01% of accidents happen by male drivers in the day and night time, respectively. 29.15% of crashes happen due to safety infringement and violations of 41 to 60 years old drivers. The results demonstrate that population density is associated with the accidents frequency and lower density results in an increased number of accidents. The necessity of the state-of-the-art regulations to govern the urban road traffic is beyond dispute, and it becomes even more crucial for citizens' relief since in our daily lives road accidents are getting more diverse.
