Analysis and comparison of traffic flow models: a new hybrid traffic flow model vs benchmark models
BackgroundThis paper compares a hybrid traffic flow model with benchmark macroscopic and microscopic models. The proposed hybrid traffic flow model may be applied considering a mixed traffic flow and is based on the combination of the macroscopic cell transmission model and the microscopic cellular automata.Modelled variablesThe hybrid model is compared against three microscopic models, namely the Krauß model, the intelligent driver model and the cellular automata, and against two macroscopic models, the Cell Transmission Model and the Cell Transmission Model with dispersion, respectively. To this end, three main applications were considered: (i) a link with a signalised junction at the end, (ii) a signalised artery, and (iii) a grid network with signalised junctions.ResultsThe numerical simulations show that the model provides acceptable results. Especially in terms of travel times, it has similar behaviour to the microscopic model. By contrast, it produces lower values of queue propagation than microscopic models (intrinsically dominated by stochastic phenomena), which are closer to the values shown by the enhanced macroscopic cell transmission model and the cell transmission model with dispersion. The validation of the model regards the analysis of the wave propagation at the boundary region.
The spatial variability of vehicle densities as determinant of urban network capacity
Due to the complexity of the traffic flow dynamics in urban road networks, most quantitative descriptions of city traffic so far have been based on computer simulations. This contribution pursues a macroscopic (fluid-dynamic) simulation approach, which facilitates a simple simulation of congestion spreading in cities. First, we show that a quantization of the macroscopic turning flows into units of single vehicles is necessary to obtain realistic fluctuations in the traffic variables, and how this can be implemented in a fluid-dynamic model. Then, we propose a new method to simulate destination flows without the requirement of individual route assignments. Combining both methods allows us to study a variety of different simulation scenarios. These reveal fundamental relationships between the average flow, the average density and the variability of the vehicle densities. Considering the inhomogeneity of traffic as an independent variable can eliminate the scattering of congested flow measurements. The variability also turns out to be a key variable of urban traffic performance. Our results can be explained through the number of full links of the road network, and approximated by a simple analytical formula.
Inverting the fundamental diagram and forecasting boundary conditions: how machine learning can improve macroscopic models for traffic flow
In this paper, we develop new methods to join machine learning techniques and macroscopic differential models, aimed at estimate and forecast vehicular traffic. This is done to complement respective advantages of data-driven and model-driven approaches. We consider here a dataset with flux and velocity data of vehicles moving on a highway, collected by fixed sensors and classified by lane and by class of vehicle. By means of a machine learning model based on an LSTM recursive neural network, we extrapolate two important pieces of information: (1) if congestion is appearing under the sensor, and (2) the total amount of vehicles which is going to pass under the sensor in the next future (30 min). These pieces of information are then used to improve the accuracy of an LWR-based first-order multi-class model describing the dynamics of traffic flow between sensors. The first piece of information is used to invert the (concave) fundamental diagram, thus recovering the density of vehicles from the flux data, and then inject directly the density datum in the model. This allows one to better approximate the dynamics between sensors, especially if an accident/bottleneck happens in a not monitored stretch of the road. The second piece of information is used instead as boundary conditions for the equations underlying the traffic model, to better predict the total amount of vehicles on the road at any future time. Some examples motivated by real scenarios will be discussed. Real data are provided by the Italian motorway company Autovie Venete S.p.A.
The “backward-looking” effect in the continuum model considering a new backward equilibrium velocity function
In this paper, a new continuum traffic model is developed considering the backward-looking effect through a new positive backward equilibrium speed function. As compared with the conventional full velocity difference model, the backward equilibrium velocity function, which is largely acceptably grounded from mathematical and physical perspectives, plays an important role in significantly enhancing the stability of the traffic flow field. A linear stability condition is derived to demonstrate the flow neutralization capacity of the model, whereas the Korteweg–de Vries–Burgers equation and the attendant analytical solution are deduced using nonlinear analysis to observe the traffic flow behavior near the neutral stability condition. A numerical simulation, used to determine the flow stability enhancement efficiency of the model, is also conducted to verify the theoretical results.
Detection and classification of sensor anomalies for simulating urban traffic scenarios
Sensor network infrastructures are widely used in smart cities to monitor and analyze urban traffic flow. Starting from punctual information coming from traffic sensor data, traffic simulation tools are used to create the digital twin” mobility data model that helps local authorities to better understand urban mobility. However, sensors can be faulty and errors in sensor data can be propagated to the traffic simulations, leading to erroneous analysis of the traffic scenarios. Providing real-time anomaly detection for time series data streams is highly valuable since it enables to automatically recognize and discard or repair sensor faults in time-sensitive processes. In this paper, we implement a data cleaning process that detects and classifies traffic anomalies distinguishing between sensor faults and unusual traffic conditions, and removes sensor faults from the input of the traffic simulation model, improving its performance. Experiments conducted on a real scenario for 30 days have demonstrated that anomaly detection coupled with anomaly classification boosts the performance of the traffic model in emulating real urban traffic.
A mechanism to describe the formation and propagation of stop-and-go waves in congested freeway traffic
This paper introduces a parsimonious theory for congested freeway traffic that describes the spontaneous appearance of oscillations and their ensuing transformation into stop-and-go waves. Based upon the analysis of detailed vehicle-trajectory data, we conclude that timid and aggressive driver behaviours are the cause for this transformation. We find that stop-and-go waves arise independently of the details of these behaviours. Analytical and simulation results are presented.
A HETEROGENEOUS MULTICLASS TRAFFIC FLOW MODEL WITH CREEPING
A heterogeneous traffic model with two vehicle classes is developed to capture overtaking and creeping in highly heterogeneous traffic flows. Creeping is a special case of overtaking that occurs when small vehicles continue to advance in congestion even though larger vehicles have completely stopped. To motivate the new model, it is shown that a two class homogeneous multiclass model is equivalent to a class of second order models originally proposed by Aw, Rascle, and Zhang (ARZ). Based on the properties of the ARZ model, homogeneous models do not allow overtaking or creeping. The new creeping model is a phase transition model which applies a system of conservation laws in the noncreeping phase and a system equivalent to a scalar model in the creeping phase. The solution to the Riemann problem is obtained by investigating the elementary waves, particularly for the cases when one vehicle class is absent, as well as in the presence of a phase transition. Based on the proposed Riemann solver, the solution to the Cauchy problem is constructed using wavefront tracking. Numerical tests are carried out using a Godunov scheme to illustrate the creeping phenomenon. Active traffic management on road networks: a macroscopic approach
Active traffic management (ATM) is the ability to dynamically manage recurrent and non-recurrent congestion based on prevailing traffic conditions in order to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of road networks. It is a continuous process of (i) obtaining and analysing traffic measurement data, (ii) operations planning, i.e. simulating various scenarios and control strategies, (iii) implementing the most promising control strategies in the field, and (iv) maintaining a real-time decision support system that filters current traffic measurements to predict the traffic state in the near future, and to suggest the best available control strategy for the predicted situation. ATM relies on a fast and trusted traffic simulator for the rapid quantitative assessment of a large number of control strategies for the road network under various scenarios, in a matter of minutes. The open-source macrosimulation tool Aurora ROAD NETWORK MODELER is a good candidate for this purpose. The paper describes the underlying dynamical traffic model and what it takes to prepare the model for simulation; covers the traffic performance measures and evaluation of scenarios as part of operations planning; introduces the framework within which the control strategies are modelled and evaluated; and presents the algorithm for real-time traffic state estimation and short-term prediction.
A Density-Based and Lane-Free Microscopic Traffic Flow Model Applied to Unmanned Aerial Vehicles
In this work, we introduce a microscopic traffic flow model called Scalar Capacity Model (SCM) which can be used to study the formation of traffic on an airway link for autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) as well as for the ground vehicles on the road. Given the 3D trajectory of UAV flights (as opposed to the 2D trajectory of ground vehicles), the main novelty in our model is to eliminate the commonly used notion of lanes and replace it with a notion of density and capacity of flow, but in such a way that individual vehicle motions can still be modeled. We name this a Density/Capacity View (DCV) of the link capacity and how vehicles utilize it versus the traditional One/Multi-Lane View (OMV). An interesting feature of this model is exhibiting both passing and blocking regimes (analogous to multi-lane or single-lane) depending on the set scalar parameter for capacity. We show the model has linear local (platoon) and asymptotic linear stability. Additionally, we perform numerical simulations and show evidence for non-linear stability. Our traffic flow model is represented by a nonlinear differential equation which we transform into a linear form. This makes our model analytically solvable in the blocking regime and piece-wise analytically solvable in the passing regime. Finally, a key advantage of using our model over an OMV model for representing UAV’s flights is the removal of the artificial restriction on passing via only adjacent lanes. This will result in an improved and more realistic traffic flow for UAVs.
Still Flowing: Approaches to Traffic Flow and Traffic Jam Modeling
Certain aspects of traffic flow measurements imply the existence of a phase transition. Models known from chaos and fractals, such as nonlinear analysis of coupled differential equations, cellular automata, or coupled maps, can generate behavior which indeed resembles a phase transition in the flow behavior. Other measurements point out that the same behavior could be generated by geometrical constraints of the scenario. This paper looks at some of the empirical evidence, but mostly focuses on different modeling approaches. The theory of traffic jam dynamics is reviewed in some detail, starting from the well-established theory of kinematic waves and then veering into the area of phase transitions. One aspect of the theory of phase transitions is that, by changing one single parameter, a system can be moved from displaying a phase transition to not displaying a phase transition. This implies that models for traffic can be tuned so that they display a phase transition or not. This paper focuses on microscopic modeling, i.e., coupled differential equations, cellular automata, and coupled maps. The phase transition behavior of these models, as far as it is known, is discussed. Similarly, fluid-dynamical models for the same questions are considered. A large portion of this paper is given to the discussion of extensions and open questions, which makes clear that the question of traffic jam dynamics is, albeit important, only a small part of an interesting and vibrant field. As our outlook shows, the whole field is moving away from a rather static view of traffic toward a dynamic view, which uses simulation as an important tool.
