Coming attractions : reading American movie trailers
2004,2009
Movie trailers—those previews of coming attractions before the start of a feature film—are routinely praised and reviled by moviegoers and film critics alike: “They give away too much of the movie.” “They’re better than the films.” “They only show the spectacular parts.” “They lie.” “They’re the best part of going to the movies.” But whether you love them or hate them, trailers always serve their purpose of offering free samples of a film to influence moviegoing decision-making. Indeed, with their inclusion on videotapes, DVDs, and on the Internet, trailers are more widely seen and influential now than at any time in their history. Starting from the premise that movie trailers can be considered a film genre, this pioneering book explores the genre’s conventions and offers a primer for reading the rhetoric of movie trailers. Lisa Kernan identifies three principal rhetorical strategies that structure trailers: appeals to audience interest in film genres, stories, and/or stars. She also analyzes the trailers for twenty-seven popular Hollywood films from the classical, transitional, and contemporary eras, exploring what the rhetorical appeals within these trailers reveal about Hollywood’s changing conceptions of the moviegoing audience. Kernan argues that movie trailers constitute a long-standing hybrid of advertising and cinema and, as such, are precursors to today’s heavily commercialized cultural forms in which art and marketing become increasingly indistinguishable.

Stable Reverse Driving of a Tractor with Multiple Trailers
2022
We address the problem of the stable reverse driving of a vehicle with multiple trailers. By itself, the reverse driving of a multiple trailer vehicle is highly unstable, so a proper steering control is needed. First, the straight reverse driving is analysed and a stable solution to the problem is explicitly calculated. The solution depends on the specific geometry of the vehicle, namely on the lengths of the tractor and the trailers, and on the set of parameters that determine the rate of convergence of the reverse driving towards the straight reverse driving. We describe two different approaches towards the derivation of the solution of the stable reverse driving. We show that the solution to the problem is uniquely determined and finally we show that the proposed solution can be easily applied to the reverse driving of the tractor along an arbitrary, gently curved, path.

Strength analysis of trailer bogies based on UIC standard
2025
For the bogie frame of the CRH2 EMU trailer, Solidworks software was used to establish a solid model of the frame, and then the model was imported into Workbench for finite element analysis. The load conditions obtained were combined according to UIC 515-4 standard, and the static strength and fatigue strength of the frame were evaluated. The results showed as follows: The bogie frame meets the strength requirements specified in the standard.

Manchester haulage boss fled with funds before company's insolvency
by
Wallace, Tim

Trailers
2025
The administrator of a Manchester haulage firm has revealed that its MD abandoned his post and allegedly tied the country in the weeks before the company collapsed. K West Transport entered administration on 29 Sep, with RCM Advisory now investigating the events leading to its failure. The company had been authorized to run 30 HGVs and 30 trailers, but by the time administrators were appointed it had ceased trading, owned only one lorry and 21 trailers in poor condition, and no staff remained, despite employing 20 workers just two years earlier. In addition, MD Krum Isporski had disappeared and is now thought to have left the country.

Branch-and-Price-and-Cut for the Truck-and-Trailer Routing Problem with Time Windows

2018
In this paper, we present a new branch-and-price-and-cut algorithm to solve the truck-and-trailer routing problem with time windows (TTRPTW) and two real-world extensions. In all TTRPTW variants, the fleet consists of one or more trucks that may attach a trailer. Some customers are not accessible with a truck-and-trailer combination, but can however be serviced by one if the trailer is previously detached and parked at a suitable location. In the first extension, the planning horizon comprises two days and customers may be visited either on both days or only once, in which case twice the daily supply must be collected. The second extension incorporates load transfer times depending on the quantity moved from a truck to its trailer. The exact branch-and-price-and-cut algorithm for the standard variant and the two new extensions is based on a set-partitioning formulation in which columns are routes describing the movement of a truck and its associated trailer. Linear relaxations of this formulation are solved by column generation where new routes are generated with a dynamic programming labeling algorithm. The effectiveness of this pricing procedure can be attributed to the adaptation of techniques such as bidirectional labeling, the
ng
-neighborhood, and heuristic pricing using dynamically reduced networks and relaxed dominance. The cutting component of the branch-and-price-and-cut adds violated subset-row inequalities to strengthen the linear relaxation. Computational studies show that our algorithm outperforms existing approaches on TTRP and TTRPTW benchmark instances used in the literature.

In this study, to investigate the factors affecting container semitrailer rollovers while driving on interchange loop ramps, a simulation model was established in TruckSim on the basis of data collected from an in-depth investigation of the vehicle, road, and driving behaviors in a real accident. The established model was validated by reproducing the accident in a simulation. The effects of vehicle speed, the height of the cargo’s center of gravity, tractor-semitrailer interactions, and the radius of the circular curve on container semitrailer rollover were investigated using the established model. The results reveal that if the height of the container semitrailer is within the limits in Chinese standards and the container semitrailer is moving at a speed of less than 45.3 km/h, it can safely travel through a loop ramp with a circular curve radius of 60 m. The height of the cargo’s center of gravity and the lateral load transfer ratio have a negative relationship, and a higher center of gravity reduces the safe speed for a container semitrailer traveling through a loop ramp. During rollover, the rear axle of the semitrailer first begins to roll over and then drives the tractor to overturn.

2025
As part of improving road safety around trucks, a solution was proposed to reduce the swept path width of a moving tractor–semi-trailer. This article presents a mathematical analysis of the movement of a tractor unit with a traditional semi-trailer with fixed axles and steered wheels. A simulation analysis of both presented vehicles was carried out. The core of the algorithm controlling the steering angle of the semi-trailer wheels is presented. The influence of controlling the semi-trailer’s swivel wheels on the swept path width of a tractor–trailer with a semi-trailer equipped with swivel wheels is discussed. The assumptions for building the control algorithm are presented. The article presents the advantages of the solution used along with the control algorithm. Measurable benefits resulting from the use of the presented solution are presented, such as increasing cargo space, reducing cargo transport costs, and reducing aerodynamic resistance and fuel consumption. It is worth emphasizing that reducing fuel consumption is very important because it reduces the emission of harmful exhaust gases into the atmosphere. The swept path width is important especially in the case of vehicles moving in a limited area, for example in the parking lots of transhipment and logistics centers, between urban buildings. Vehicles admitted to traffic meet the minimum conditions imposed by homologation regulations, but reducing the swept path width allows for improving the operational properties of the tractor–semi-trailer. The use of the proposed control algorithm to control the turn of the semi-trailer’s steered wheels brings tangible benefits both in improving road safety and in reducing the emission of harmful substances into the environment.
