The limits of transnationalism
Transnationalism means many things to many people, from crossing physical borders to intellectual ones. The Limits of Transnationalism reassesses the overly optimistic narratives often associated with this malleable term, revealing both the metaphorical and very real obstacles for transnational mobility. Nancy L. Green begins her wide-ranging examination with the story of Frank Gueydan, an early twentieth-century American convicted of a minor crime in France who was unable to get a fair trial there nor able to enlist the help of US officials. Gueydan's odd predicament opens the door for a series of inquiries into the past twenty-five years of transnational scholarship, raising questions about the weaknesses of global networks and the slippery nature of citizenship for those who try to live transnational lives. The Limits of Transnationalism serves as a cogent reminder of this topic's complexity, calling for greater attention to be paid to the many bumps in the road.

Vielfach werden Interessen gegeneinander ausgespielt: „Schutz deines Arbeitsplatzes oder deines Ökosystems?\" bzw. „Lohn oder Gesundheit?\" Diese schier unvereinbaren Interessen werden im herrschenden Diskurs nur dann als vereinbar präsentiert, wenn sie durch rechte Arche-Noah- oder L/feboat-ldeologien gerahmt werden: „Wir können deinen Arbeitsplatz und dein Ökosystem (und somit auch deine Gesundheit) schützen, wenn wir die Migrant·innen nicht ins Land lassen und die Überbevölkerung im Globalen Süden stoppen.\" September während der Global Week For Future stattfand. Und als Klimabewegung, so erklären es Fridays for Future immer wieder, weil der fortschreitende Klimawandel die Kluft zwischen armen und reichen Menschen nicht nur global, sondern auch in Deutschland weiter vergrößern wird und weil die Hauptverursacher nicht die ärmeren, sondern die reichen Menschen sind. Ohne einen ,labour-turn' der Klimabewegung und einen ,climate-turn' der Arbeiterinnenbewegung wird es keine Nachhaltigkeitsrevolution geben. Als Beschwörung einer großen Last und somit als Variation des White Man's Burden-Diskurses lesbar, ist dies nichts weniger als eine Kampfansage: Die Vormachtstellung Deutschlands in Europa soll auch in der „sozial-ökologischen Katastrophe\" behauptet werden; die Gewerkschaften sind bereit, ihren Beitrag zu leisten. Entsprechend signalisieren die entsprechenden Slogans und Zukunftspapiere, dass dies künftig auch unter „grünen\" Vorzeichen passieren soll.

Intercambios transnacionales entre Madrás y Manila
Hasta la fecha, la historiografía sobre los intercambios mercantiles articulados en torno a la Manila española durante la Edad Moderna ha dejado en buena medida de lado las conexiones con el subcontinente indio, señaladamente con la región litoral de Coromandel. A través del estudio simultáneo de fuentes documentales, iconográficas y relatos de viajes asociados tanto al mundo colonial filipino-español como al indo-británico, se aspira a dilucidar, con nuevos datos y bajo las perspectivas de la historia transnacional, la cuestión de los vínculos comerciales entre Filipinas y Coromandel en el siglo que media entre 1650 y 1750 en sus dimensiones material, histórico-cronológica y social. En base a los resultados obtenidos, el presente artículo plantea la existencia pretérita de un verdadero sistema indo-pacífico, articulado sobre la base del eje Madrás-Manila y en el marco de un sistema mundo policéntrico; al tiempo que apunta posibles futuras líneas de trabajo.

Transnational Encounters
The text focuses on a series of transnational flows and polylocal agencies marking the art of the American folk musician and performer Sixto Rodriguez. After issuing two albums in the seventies, he was quickly forgotten in the USA but luckily not outside of it. His first album, Cold Fact (1970), became the unofficial anthem for the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa in the seventies and the performer was paradoxically ‘rediscovered’ due to a hoax with the help of enduring South-African, Botswanan, Zimbabwean, Australian and New Zealander fans and through the research of the Swedish-Algerian filmmaker Malik Bendjelloul, who made and directed Searching for Sugarman (2012), an Oscar-winning documentary film. The quest for Rodriguez’s global itineraries still goes on through his official webpage and the release of a book in 2015 with performer-activist Rodriguez becoming in the context of global discourses and Deep Maps strategy a transnational figure rather than just an American singer.
