The Curiosity rover has been sampling on Mars for the past 5 years (see the Perspective by ten Kate). Eigenbrode
et al.
used two instruments in the SAM (Sample Analysis at Mars) suite to catch traces of complex organics preserved in 3-billion-year-old sediments. Heating the sediments released an array of organics and volatiles reminiscent of organic-rich sedimentary rock found on Earth. Most methane on Earth is produced by biological sources, but numerous abiotic processes have been proposed to explain martian methane. Webster
et al.
report atmospheric measurements of methane covering 3 martian years and found that the background level varies with the local seasons. The seasonal variation provides an important clue for determining the origin of martian methane.

The background level of methane in Mars’ atmosphere varies with season, providing a clue to its origin.
Variable levels of methane in the martian atmosphere have eluded explanation partly because the measurements are not repeatable in time or location. We report in situ measurements at Gale crater made over a 5-year period by the Tunable Laser Spectrometer on the Curiosity rover. The background levels of methane have a mean value 0.41 ± 0.16 parts per billion by volume (ppbv) (95% confidence interval) and exhibit a strong, repeatable seasonal variation (0.24 to 0.65 ppbv). This variation is greater than that predicted from either ultraviolet degradation of impact-delivered organics on the surface or from the annual surface pressure cycle. The large seasonal variation in the background and occurrences of higher temporary spikes (~7 ppbv) are consistent with small localized sources of methane released from martian surface or subsurface reservoirs.

A laser diode (LD) end-pumped continuous-wave (CW) tunable Nd3+:LiYF4 (Nd:YLF) laser operating on the 4F3/2→4I13/2 transition was performed. Four single-wavelength (SW) lasing at 1321, 1314, 1371, and 1364 nm in the π-polarized direction and three SW lasing at 1314, 1326, and 1371 nm in the σ-polarized direction were achieved using a tuning prism. At 20 W pump power, the σ-polarized 1314 nm emission generated 7.3 W power output with 39.4% slope efficiency. Further, the three-pair of switchable π-polarized dual-wavelengths (DWs) at 1321/1314 nm, 1371/1364 nm, and 1321/1364 nm and the two-pair of switchable σ-polarized DWs at 1314/1326 nm and 1314/1371 nm were also realized by rotating an intracavity birefringence filter (BF). In addition, by employing dual intracavity BFs, the balanced DW output power was attained, achieving 6.4 W total maximum output at 1314/1321 nm in the π-polarized direction.

Systematic study of tunable laser cooling for trapped-ion experiments
2023
We report on a comparative analysis of quenched sideband cooling in trapped ions. We introduce a theoretical approach for time-efficient simulation of the temporal cooling characteristics and derive the optimal conditions providing fast laser cooling into the ion’s motional ground state. The simulations were experimentally benchmarked with a single

ion confined in a linear Paul trap. Sideband cooling was carried out on a narrow quadrupole transition, enhanced with an additional clear-out laser for controlling the effective linewidth of the cooling transition. Quench cooling was thus for the first time studied in the resolved sideband, intermediate and semi-classical regime. We discuss the non-thermal distribution of Fock states during laser cooling and reveal its impact on time dilation shifts in optical atomic clocks.

Electrically Tunable Polymer Whispering-Gallery-Mode Laser
2022
Microlasers hold great promise for the development of photonics and optoelectronics. At present, tunable microcavity lasers, especially regarding in situ dynamic tuning, are still the focus of research. In this study, we combined a 0.7Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.3PbTiO3 (PMN-PT) piezoelectric crystal with a Poly [9,9-dioctylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl] (PFO) microring cavity to realize a high-quality, electrically tunable, whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) laser. The dependence of the laser properties on the diameter of the microrings, including the laser spectrum and quality (Q) value, was investigated. It was found that with an increase in microring diameter, the laser emission redshifted, and the Q value increased. In addition, the device effectively achieved a blueshift under an applied electric field, and the wavelength tuning range was 0.71 nm. This work provides a method for in situ dynamic spectral modulation of microcavity lasers, and is expected to provide inspiration for the application of integrated photonics technology.

Laser Diode Pumped Polymer Lasers with Tunable Emission Based on Microfluidic Channels
2021
Tunable whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) lasers have been paid lots of attention for their potential applications in the photonic field. Here, a tunable polymer WGM laser based on laser diode pumping is realized with a threshold of 0.43 MW/cm2 per pulse. The WGM laser is realized by a microfluidic microcavity, which consists of a quartz capillary and gain materials. The laser performance keeps stable for a long time (3.5 h), pumped by a 50-ns 50 Hz laser diode with a pumping peak power density of 1.08 MW/cm2 per pulse. The lasing wavelength can be tuned over 15 nm by changing the gain material concentration from 3.5 mg/mL to 12.5 mg/mL in the microfluidic channel. Moreover, the lasing mode can be switched between transverse magnetic (TM) and transverse electric (TE) modes by adjusting the pump polarization. These results provide the basis for designing nanophotonic devices with laser diode pumping.

The Landsat-9 satellite, launched in September 2021, carries the Operational Land Imager-2 (OLI-2) as one of its payloads. This instrument is a clone of the Landsat-8 OLI and its mission is to continue the operational land imaging of the Landsat program. The OLI-2 instrument is not significantly different from OLI though the instrument-level pre-launch spectral characterization process was much improved. The focal plane modules used on OLI-2 were manufactured as spares for OLI and much of the spectral characterization of the components was performed for OLI. However, while the spectral response of the fully assembled OLI was characterized by a double monochromator system, the OLI-2 spectral characterization made use of the Goddard Laser for Absolute Measurement of Radiance (GLAMR). GLAMR is a system of tunable lasers that cover 350–2500 nm which are fiber-coupled to a 30 in integrating sphere permanently monitored by NIST-traceable radiometers. GLAMR allowed the spectral characterization of every detector of the OLI-2 focal plane in nominal imaging conditions. The spectral performance of the OLI-2 was, in general, much better than requirements. The final relative spectral responses (RSRs) represent the best characterization any Landsat instrument spectral response. This paper will cover the results of the spectral characterization from the component-level to the instrument-level of the Landsat-9 OLI-2.

Output Characteristics of External-Cavity Mode-Hop-Free Tunable Laser Source in C+L Band
2024
Tunable laser sources with a wide wavelength tuning range, mode-hop-free (MHF) operation, and high spectral purity are essential for applications such as high-resolution spectroscopy, coherent detection, and intelligent fiber sensing. In this paper, we present a wide-range tunable laser source that operates without mode hopping, based on external cavity feedback using a semiconductor gain chip as the laser gain medium. The wavelength, power, and spectral characteristics of the laser are experimentally measured. A wide MHF continuous wavelength tuning range from 1480 nm to 1620 nm with a side-mode suppression ratio of more than 61.65 dB is achieved. An output optical power of more than 11.14 dBm with good power stability can also be realized in the full C+L band. This proposed external-cavity tunable laser source features a narrow intrinsic linewidth and MHF tunable radiation with a maximum sweep speed of 200 nm/s, enabling practical applications such as high-resolution vector spectrum analysis.

Future wireless communications require higher security as well as a higher data rate. We have been studying physically secured wireless transmission systems and previously proposed encryption/decryption techniques based on the AND operation caused by coherent detection between two encrypted data sequences on two different terahertz carriers. Furthermore, we suggested that by employing the XOR operation as the decryption, the proposed system can be made more secure because XOR increases the computational complexity for eavesdroppers to recover the plaintext. In this paper, we propose the XOR operation between two data sequences on FSK-modulated terahertz waves. By constructing the XOR encryption transmitters/receivers, which consisted of high-speed wavelength tunable lasers and arrayed uni-traveling-carrier photodiodes (UTC-PDs), we successfully demonstrated the XOR operation between two data sequences on 200 GHz waves from the two transmitters.

Integrated Terahertz FMCW Radar and FSK Communication Enabled by High-Speed Wavelength Tunable Lasers
2025
In future 6G systems, integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) in the terahertz (THz) band are emerging as a key technology. Photomixing-based approaches offer advantages for the generation and control of THz waves due to their wide bandwidth and frequency tunability. This paper proposes and experimentally demonstrates a THz-band ISAC system that employs high-speed wavelength tunable lasers. Leveraging the rapid wavelength tunability of the laser, the system simultaneously generates a frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radar signal and a frequency-shift keying (FSK) communication signal. Experimental results show successful ranging with a centimeter-level distance measurement error using a 7.9 GHz sweep-bandwidth THz-FMCW signal. The system achieves a short repetition period of 800 ns, significantly enhancing real-time performance in dynamic environments. Moreover, 2FSK communication at 2 Gbit/s was demonstrated without the use of an external modulator, achieving a BER below the HD-FEC threshold. These results confirm that radar and communication functionalities can be integrated into a single transmitter. The proposed system contributes to reducing system complexity and cost and offers a promising solution for 6G applications.
