UAST: Unicode Aware Sanskrit Transliteration
Devanāgarī is the writing system that is adapted by various languages like Sanskrit. International Alphabet of Sanskrit Transliteration (IAST) is a transliteration scheme for romanisation of Sanskrit language. IAST makes use of diacritics to represent various characters. On a computer, these are represented using Unicode standard which differs from how the Sanskrit language behaves at a very fundamental level. This results in an issue that is encountered while designing typesetting software for devanāgarī and IAST. We hereby discuss the problems and provide a solution that solves the issue of incompatibilities between various transliteration and encoding schemes. The impacts of purchase verification badge and review typesetting on voting behaviors of public assessors towards suspicious positive online reviews
To tackle the issue of numerous suspicious reviews, some platforms have adopted crowdsourcing by inviting consumers to become public assessors. Drawing on cognitive load theory, this study examines the impact of purchase verification (PV) badges and review typesetting on voting behaviors, as well as their moderating roles in the relationship between review depth and voting behavior. Through five experiments, we demonstrate that review depth and typesetting influence voting behavior through serial mediations involving perceived reviewer effort and review helpfulness. PV badges influence voting through review credibility and review helpfulness. Both PV badges and review typesetting act as negative moderators between review depth and voting behavior. This pioneering study highlights the critical roles of PV badges and typesetting in public assessment systems, offering valuable insights for platform management.

The discussion that follows is transcribed and edited from an agenda item at the Editorial Collective’s 2020 annual general meeting, addressed via Zoom across sometimes inconvenient time zones. We talked about what the use, or deliberate non-use, of italics can signal when it comes to writing and reading about food, and the assumptions and norms embedded in typographical choices. It bears noting upfront that the end goal of this discussion was always concrete and practical: to provide clear stylistic guidelines to authors who wish to be considered for publication in the journal. But that seemingly simple instruction—do, or do not, use italics for certain food items or dishes—must be (at least internally) justifiable.
A fast direct numerical simulation method for characterising hydraulic roughness
We describe a fast direct numerical simulation (DNS) method that promises to directly characterise the hydraulic roughness of any given rough surface, from the hydraulically smooth to the fully rough regime. The method circumvents the unfavourable computational cost associated with simulating high-Reynolds-number flows by employing minimal-span channels (Jiménez & Moin, J. Fluid Mech., vol. 225, 1991, pp. 213–240). Proof-of-concept simulations demonstrate that flows in minimal-span channels are sufficient for capturing the downward velocity shift, that is, the Hama roughness function, predicted by flows in full-span channels. We consider two sets of simulations, first with modelled roughness imposed by body forces, and second with explicit roughness described by roughness-conforming grids. Owing to the minimal cost, we are able to conduct direct numerical simulations with increasing roughness Reynolds numbers while maintaining a fixed blockage ratio, as is typical in full-scale applications. The present method promises a practical, fast and accurate tool for characterising hydraulic resistance directly from profilometry data of rough surfaces.
Automatic splicing of Chinese single-sided shreds based on character feature and typesetting characteristics
In this paper we proposed an automatic splicing algorithm for regular cross-cut single-sided shreds of pure Chinese document, which was based on the characteristics of character and typesetting. The algorithm began with extracting the characteristics including character width, character height, line height and line spacing, after which the shreds meeting the typesetting requirement were spliced according to the edge similarity. Afterwards, the horizontal projection vectors of the shreds were corrected and the shreds were clustered by row according to horizontal projection similarity. A greedy algorithm with rejection strategy was then used to complete the intra-cluster horizontal splicing of shreds based on edge similarity. The experiment results revealed that the algorithm proposed in this paper had the characteristics of both high splicing speed and high accuracy.
A new look for TWS publications
The appearance of The Wildlife Society (TWS) publications (i.e., Journal of Wildlife Management [JWM], Wildlife Monographs [WM], Wildlife Society Bulletin [WSB]) has changed over the years. In 2021, a new journal design (NJD) will be implemented for TWS publications following months of discussion with Council and the journal editors. The scope of the articles and the mission of the journals will not change, but the format and layouts will be modified to simplify typesetting, assist with online reading, and provide a contemporary look for the publications of TWS.
