Free Black Communities and the Underground Railroad
This enlightening study employs the tools of archaeology to uncover a new historical perspective on the Underground Railroad. Unlike previous histories of the Underground Railroad, which have focused on frightened fugitive slaves and their benevolent abolitionist accomplices, Cheryl Janifer LaRoche focuses instead on free African American communities, the crucial help they provided to individuals fleeing slavery, and the terrain where those flights to freedom occurred. This study foregrounds several small, rural hamlets on the treacherous southern edge of the free North in Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. LaRoche demonstrates how landscape features such as waterways, iron forges, and caves played a key role in the conduct and effectiveness of the Underground Railroad. Rich in oral histories, maps, memoirs, and archaeological investigations, this examination of the \"geography of resistance\" tells the new, powerful, and inspiring story of African Americans ensuring their own liberation in the midst of oppression.

Sounds of the underground : a cultural, political, and aesthetic mapping of underground and fringe music
In this book, Stephen Graham examines the largely unexplored terrain of underground music-exploratory forms of music-making, such as noise, free improvisation, and extreme metal, that exist outside or on the fringes of mainstream culture, generally independent from both the market and from traditional high-art institutions. Until now there has been little scholarly discussion of underground music and its cultural, political, and aesthetic importance. In addition to providing a much-needed historical outline of this diverse scene, Stephen Graham focuses on the digital age, showing the underground and its fringes as based largely in radical anti-capitalist politics and aesthetics, tied to the political contexts and structures of late-capitalism. Sounds of the Underground explores these various ideas of separation and capture through interviews and analysis, developing a critical account of both the music and its political and cultural economy.

Alternative Comics
In the 1980s, a sea change occurred in comics. Fueled by Art Spiegel- man and Françoise Mouly's avant-garde anthologyRawand the launch of theLove & Rocketsseries by Gilbert, Jaime, and Mario Hernandez, the decade saw a deluge of comics that were more autobiographical, emotionally realistic, and experimental than anything seen before. These alternative comics were not the scatological satires of the 1960s underground, nor were they brightly colored newspaper strips or superhero comic books.
InAlternative Comics: An Emerging Literature, Charles Hatfield establishes the parameters of alternative comics by closely examining long-form comics, in particular the graphic novel. He argues that these are fundamentally a literary form and offers an extensive critical study of them both as a literary genre and as a cultural phenomenon. Combining sharp-eyed readings and illustrations from particular texts with a larger understanding of the comics as an art form, this book discusses the development of specific genres, such as autobiography and history.
Alternative Comicsanalyzes such seminal works as Spiegelman'sMaus, Gilbert Hernandez'sPalomar: The Heartbreak Soup Stories, and Justin Green'sBinky Brown Meets the Holy Virgin Mary. Hatfield explores how issues outside of cartooning-the marketplace, production demands, work schedules-can affect the final work. Using Hernandez's Palomar as an example, he shows how serialization may determine the way a cartoonist structures a narrative. In a close look atMaus, Binky Brown, and Harvey Pekar's American Splendor, Hatfield teases out the complications of creating biography and autobiography in a substantially visual medium, and shows how creators approach these issues in radically different ways.

InterSeA: An Unmanned Surface Vehicle in Coastal Areas
The sea surface microlayer (SML) is a critical biogeochemical boundary, playing a key role in air–sea exchange processes, yet its sampling remains challenging due to potential dilution from subsurface water layers, susceptibility to contamination and labor- and time-consuming procedures. The design, development and operational verification of a research unmanned surface vehicle (USV), equipped with samplers for collecting both sea surface microlayer and subsurface water samples (SSW), are described in this study. The InterSeA autonomous vessel is of the catamaran type, equipped with an SML sampler consisting of rotating glass discs and a peristaltic pump for collecting SSW samples. Verification analysis with traditional manual sampling techniques (glass plate and mesh screen) revealed that the InterSeA achieved comparable results in terms of reproducibility and contamination control for both the inorganic and organic analytes examined. The results obtained highlight the effectiveness of autonomous platforms in achieving reliable, low-contamination SML sampling, emphasizing their suitability for broader use in marine biogeochemical research demanding high resolution and minimally disturbed interface measurements. InterSeA is one of the smallest and lightest USVs using rotating glass discs for SML sampling.
