Case study of a model primary health care program in Nigeria: History, evolution, challenges, and future perspectives
This short report describes the historical evolution of a pioneer Model PHC programme located in Ogun State, southwest Nigeria, as a direct result of the vision and effort of Professor Olikoye Ransome-Kuti, and his drive to entrench the delivery of primary health care (PHC) in Nigeria. It describes some of the programmes inspired by the PHC philosophy at the Model PHC Centre, some of the challenges faced over the years, and the need to reposition the programme. It exemplifies key principles in PHC and its philosophy that are instructive for health practitioners, policymakers and development practitioners, especially those with interest in resource-poor countries.
Curriculum analysis of ethics in engineering: a case study
For several decades, there have been warnings about certain ethical faults in engineers regarding corruption in different works, which lead to collapses and the death of people, calling engineering into question and affecting the social development of communities. Ethics is an educational responsibility, the ethical debate must take place inside and outside the classroom, since studies carried out in different universities indicate that ethics continues to be a pending subject in engineering programs. This study seeks to contribute to educational innovation for the teaching of ethics in engineering through documentary review and interviews with students and teachers. It was found that the education of ethics in engineering should be included in the curriculum as an important factor in the training of engineers, from a practical dimension, which includes the study of cases, moral dilemmas, and based on problems applied to the environment.
Experiences of Management Activities in University Teaching
Bearing in mind the context of transformations in, and of the, Higher Education and the intensification of professors’ work, this paper debates academic management in the daily routines of university professors in regard to teaching, research and extension. The discussion focuses on the experiences of 23 university professors, from Brazil and Portugal, collected through biographic interviews. Amongst the positive features of management are the possibilities to democratically participate in the university’s decision making and of a clear view on the functioning and structuring of higher education. The convergence between management with bureaucratic and administrative activities is seen as a negative feature, leading to a depreciation and discredit of management.
