Long-Term Impact of Interregional Migrants on Population Prediction
Japan is becoming depopulated, with declining fertility rates and massive urban agglomeration due to emigrations from rural areas, which results in rural–urban disparities. As demographic and social divisions between rural and urban areas increase, maintenance of infrastructure and social facilities becomes much more difficult. For social and demographic sustainability, accurate predictions of long-term population distributions are needed. This study improves the Cohort Component Analysis (CCA) into two aspects of “dependent structure” in the model system. The migration sub-model is expanded to include related structures between available job opportunities and the available workforce in each region, which are specified using the spatial autoregressive model. The advantage of the improved CCA to provides rational future projections by considering the longitudinal changes in the spatial distribution of the workforce. The simulation of the proposed model gives an alternative long-term impact of population distribution in Japan, which is compared with the conventional CCA. The results show that the future Japanese populations will become more concentrated in urban areas, with a lower fertility rate. Furthermore, the manufacturing employees will be attracted to metropolitan areas or to regions with industrial zones, and that the number of retailers will undergo changes over time, even in urbanized areas.
Longitudinal association of urbanization and risk of myocardial infarction in China: an analysis from the China Health and Nutrition Survey
Background The association between urbanization and myocardial infarction in China was not fully understood. We aim to evaluate the association between urbanization level and the risk of myocardial infarction. Methods Participants’ data from China Health and Nutrition Survey were analyzed. The survey is an ongoing open cohort with a multistage, random cluster process to draw a sample of over 30,000 individuals in 15 provinces and municipal cities. A multi-component score, urbanization index, was used to measure urbanization level. Urbanization index was categorized by cut-off values of 40, 60, and 80. Baseline characteristics were presented as percentage for categorical variables, and mean or median for continuous variables depending on normality. The association of urbanization index and myocardial infarction risk was evaluated longitudinally by a multilevel mixed-effects parametric survival model with urbanization index as a time-dependent variable using Stata software. Results A total of 16,565 participants without previous myocardial infarction were involved in the cohort. At baseline, urbanization index was positively correlated with myocardial infarction risk factors, including blood pressure, body mass index, diabetes, and stroke. In the univariate model, urbanization index was associated with risk of myocardial infarction in a “U-shape” manner, with the lowest myocardial infarction risk in urbanization index ranging from 40 to 60 (Hazard Ratio 0.55 and p =  0.013). However, in the multivariate model adjusting for myocardial infarction risk factors and other confounders, urbanization index ≥ 40 was consistently associated with lower MI risks (Hazard Ratio 0.46 and p =  0.002 for urbanization index 40–60; Hazard Ratio 0.56 and p =  0.021 for urbanization index 60–80; and Hazard Ratio 0.44 and p =  0.002 for urbanization index ≥ 80). Conclusions Our study indicated that urbanization of living communities was associated with a reduced risk of myocardial infarction.
Interactions and Conflicts between Urbanization and Greenness: A Case Study from Nanjing, China
Urbanization is rapidly occupying green spaces, making it crucial to understand implicit conflicts between urbanization and greenness. This study proposes an ecological greenness index (EGI) and a comprehensive urbanization index (CUI) and selects Nanjing, a megacity in China, as the study area to research the spatial and temporal evolutionary trends of the EGI and CUI in the context of land use/land cover (LULC) changes from 2000 to 2020. Meanwhile, the conflicts and complex interaction characteristics of the EGI and CUI are discussed from both static and dynamic perspectives, and their driving mechanisms are investigated by combining specific indicators. The results demonstrate that over the past 20 years, LULC in Nanjing was dominated by cultivated land, forest land, and artificial surfaces. The encroachment of artificial surfaces on green space was strengthened, resulting in a decrease in the proportion of cultivated land from 70.09% in 2000 to 58.00% in 2020. The CUI increased at a change rate of 0.6%/year, while the EGI showed significant browning (change rate: −0.23%/year), mainly concentrated within the main urban boundaries. The relationship between the CUI and EGI made the leap from “primary coordination” to “moderate coordination”, but there remains a risk of further deterioration of the decoupling relationship between the CUI and ecological pressures. The multi-year average contribution of the CUI to the EGI was 49.45%. Urbanization activities that dominate changes in greenness have changed over time, reflecting the timing of urban conflict management. The results provide important insights for urban ecological health monitoring and management.
Urbanization in Resource-Based County-Level Cities in China: A Case Study of New Urbanization in Wuan City, Hebei Province
This study investigates the complex dynamics of new-type urbanization in resource-based county-level cities, using Wuan City in Hebei Province, China, as a representative case. As China pursues a high-quality development agenda, cities historically dependent on resource extraction face profound challenges in achieving sustainable and inclusive urban growth. This research employs a multi-method approach—including Theil index analysis, industrial shift-share analysis, a Cobb–Douglas production function model, and a composite urbanization index—to quantitatively diagnose the constraints on Wuan’s development and assess its transformation efforts. Our empirical results reveal a multifaceted situation: while the urban–rural income gap has narrowed, rural income streams remain fragile. The shift-share analysis indicates that although Wuan’s traditional industries have regained competitiveness, the city’s economic structure is still burdened by a persistent negative structural component, hindering diversification. Furthermore, the economy exhibits characteristics of a labor-intensive growth model with inefficient capital deployment. These underlying issues are reflected in a comprehensive urbanization index that, after a period of rapid growth, has recently stagnated, signaling the exhaustion of the city’s traditional development mode. In response, Wuan attempts an “industrial transformation-driven new-type urbanization” path. This study details the three core strategies being implemented: (1) incremental population urbanization through development at the urban fringe and in industrial zones; (2) in situ urbanization of the existing rural population; and (3) the cultivation of specialized “characteristic small towns” to create new, diversified economic nodes. The findings from Wuan offer critical, actionable lessons for other resource-dependent regions. The case demonstrates that successful urban transformation requires not only industrial upgrading but also integrated, spatially aware planning and robust institutional support. We conclude that while Wuan’s model provides a valuable reference, its strategies must be adapted to local contexts, emphasizing the universal importance of institutional innovation, human capital investment, and a people-centered approach to achieving resilient and high-quality urbanization.
Correlating Cases of Soil-Transmitted Helminths and Remote Sensing Covariates: A Case Study Utilizing 2015, 2017, and 2019 Metadata of Camarines Sur, Philippines
Introduction Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) is a group of helminths that are considered to be neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) and, globally, affect more than 1.5 to 2.6 million people yearly. Depending on the species, they can be acquired by ingesting embryonated eggs from contaminated matter or by skin penetration. Most species of STH are found in the tropics, such as the Philippines. Despite the Mass Drug Administration (MDA), the cases of STH infection continue to rise in the country. Surveys from the Research Institute of Tropical Medicine (RITM) indicate that a high prevalence of STH ( Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, and Necator americanus ) was primarily observed in the provinces of the country, such as in Camarines Sur. Objectives To correlate remote sensing covariates such as Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Normalized Difference Built-up Index (NDBI) - to STH-infected cases of the 37 municipalities of Camarines Sur. Methodology The available public health record of STH cases from 2015 to 2019 were calculated using the Quantum Geographic Information System (QGIS)and correlated using Pearson Correlation Coefficient. Results The results showed that infection was higher in children than adults, and A. lumbricoides caused 60% of infection. No correlation of indices with infection cases during 2015 and 2017 was observed; however, 2019 showed a moderate strength (p = 0.037) in correlation. Conclusion This indicates that infection relied not mainly on vegetation and urbanization but on additional environmental factors and non-environmental variables.
Evaluation and Driving Analysis of Eco-Environmental Quality in Guangdong Province Based on an Improved Water Benefit-Based Ecological Index
As Guangdong is a pivotal province in China’s national forest city initiative, examining the spatiotemporal evolution and key drivers of eco-environmental quality (EEQ) in Guangdong is essential for advancing regional sustainable development. To address the complexity of EEQ assessments in areas that are characterized by dense hydrological networks, extensive vegetation cover, and rapid urban expansion, the Google Earth Engine platform was utilized in this study, and remote sensing indices with heightened sensitivity to vegetation and moisture dynamics—namely, the kernel normalized difference vegetation index and the kernel normalized difference moisture index—were introduced to develop an improved water benefit-based ecological index (ImWBEI). Through an integrated analytical framework incorporating Theil–Sen trend analysis, Mann–Kendall significance testing, Hurst exponent analysis, an optimal parameter-based geographical detector, and a coupled coordination degree model, this research systematically evaluated the spatiotemporal patterns, future trends, driving mechanisms, and coordination with urbanization of the EEQ in Guangdong from 2000 to 2021. The results demonstrated that the ImWBEI enhanced the detailed characterization of complex underlying surfaces, such as urban built-up areas and land–water transition zones. Throughout the study period, the EEQ in Guangdong displayed a stable spatial distribution characterized by higher values in the north and lower values in the south. Concurrently, the EEQ significantly improved at a rate of 0.0092 per year. Hurst index analysis indicated that this trajectory would likely persist, with the future trend dominated by a pattern of weak persistent improvement. The comprehensive urbanization index was identified as the most critical factor influencing the spatial differentiation of the EEQ in Guangdong. Although notable north–south disparities were observed in the coordination between the EEQ and comprehensive urbanization, the provincial-level coupled coordination consistently improved. Consequently, this work yielded actionable insights and a replicable framework for ecological monitoring and coordinated development in similar water–forest integrated urban regions. It was particularly relevant for informing ecological restoration prioritization and development restriction decisions in critical land–water transition zones—areas where the ImWBEI demonstrated enhanced sensitivity.
Applying geomatic analyses using landsat imagery: implications for ecosystem management in Occidental Mindoro, the Philippines
Anthropogenic activities over the last decade in Occidental Mindoro have shaped habitat loss and wildlife endangerment. In the twentieth century, farming by the local community was perceived to be the leading threat to the decline of native flora and fauna. Hence, this study investigated the impacts of anthropogenic practices in Occidental Mindoro in three time series (2019, 2010, and 2004) using Geographic Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing Techniques by assessing the following geomatic matrices: (i) the Land Use and Land Cover Change (LULCC), (ii) Normalized Difference Built-up Index (NDBI), (iii) Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), and (iv) Land Surface Temperature (LST). The results of the study showed the following: (i) An increase in LST and NDBI and a decline in NDVI from 2004 to 2019; (ii) An increase in LST is correlated with an increase in NDBI and a decrease in NDVI values; and the (iii) LULC maps affirmed the decline in forest cover and an increase in cropland, grassland, and barren land. These quantitative measures of landscape heterogeneities may imply that anthropogenic activities over the span of ca. 20 years have already affected the forest cover in Occidental Mindoro. This study recommends implementing more land and conservation management strategies and policies by essential stakeholders such as the Government and Non-government organizations.
Is the sand bubbler crab (Scopimera globosa) an effective indicator for assessing sandy beach urbanization and adjacent terrestrial ecological quality
Urbanization in South Korea has significantly impacted the country’s sandy beach ecosystems. In our study, we investigated the population responses of sand bubbler crabs (Scopimera globosa) to beach urbanization and assessed the impact of adjacent terrestrial ecological quality. We employed the urbanization index to measure the urbanization levels of two sandy beaches and the remote-sensing ecological index (RSEI) to evaluate the ecological quality of adjacent terrestrial areas. The sampling of sand bubbler crab populations was conducted over five months. Our results show that urbanization significantly influences sand bubbler crab populations. While the ecological quality of adjacent terrestrial areas does not directly affect the crab populations, the land surface temperature (LST) of surrounding lands has a significant impact on sand bubbler crab biomass. These results suggest that sand bubbler crabs may serve as a useful indicator of anthropogenic disturbance on sandy beaches. This study provides critical ecological insights and offers a novel perspective for developing effective conservation strategies in South Korea’s sandy beach ecosystems.
Tolerant and avoiders in an urban landscape: anuran species richness and functional groups responses in the Yungas’ forest of NW Argentina
Urbanization is one of the most important causes of ecological changes and biodiversity loss worldwide, and forests in Latin America provide valuable scenarios to understand the ecological effects of this human-driven phenomenon due to its high urbanization rate. Our aim was to investigate how urbanization shapes species richness (SR) and composition of anuran communities in NW Argentina, and to determine which suite of life history traits are related to anuran tolerance to urban development. We classified anuran species in Functional Groups (FG) based on a series of ecological traits and recognized them as urban-tolerant or urban-avoiders. We constructed an urbanization composite index (UI) through an exploratory factor analysis based on measures of artificial light intensity, noise pollution, land use types, and mean values of LTS, NDMI, and NDVI. We tested the response of SR, FG and species occurrence to UI with Generalized Linear Models and a variation partitioning analysis. Our results showed the negative influence of urbanization on anuran diversity and suggested that the loss of anuran species is not random, pointing to the presence of environmental filters. Only terrestrial frogs that build aquatic foam nests were not affected by an increase in urbanization, so they may be considered as urban--tolerant. Further, our results highlighted the important role of dispersal capacity in structuring the urban anuran assemblages. As ecologists working in urban habitats, we emphasize the need of a more comprehensive and generalized understanding of ecological and life history traits associated with urban tolerant anurans.
The association between urbanization and child height: a multilevel study in China
Background Recent economic development in China has been accompanied by well-documented health inequalities between regions. The impact of individual factors on child height has been widely studied, but the influence of community-level factors has not yet been fully studied. Methods The cross-sectional data of 1606 Chinese children aged 5–18 years from the China Health and Nutrition Survey 2011 were used. Multilevel analysis was used to examine the association of community factors (using urbanization index) with child height. Child height was measured following standardized procedures, and height-for-age Z scores were calculated as outcome variables. Datasets were presented at two levels: community variable (Level-2) was an urbanization index which is a composite score summarizing 12 community-level contextual factors. Individual variables (Level-1) were child gender, ethnicity, percentage of energy intake from protein, maternal height, maternal education level, and family income. Results Urbanization index was associated with child height. Among the 12 community-level factors, ‘education’ were positively associated with child height. Additionally, stratified analyses by age showed that ‘population density’ and ‘housing’ were positively significantly associated with the height of elder children (13–18 years). At the individual level, male sex, higher maternal height, higher maternal education levels, higher family income, and higher percentage of energy intake from protein, were significantly positively associated with child height. Conclusions Our findings point to the role of contextual factors that generate differences between regions in shaping the distribution of child physical health outcomes. Our study suggests that public health programs and policies for child’s physical development may need to combine individual-centered strategies and also approaches aimed at changing residential environments.
